Is the Patriot inaccurate?

I saw it yesterday and wow, it was good.

In the movie, the revolutionaries win a battle that was actually lost in real life. Also, many people have commented that the movie portrays the British as being cruel and vicious. There are some other aspects of "The Patriot" that are considered highly inaccurate, but I'm not sure what they exactly are.

they portrayed the leader of the Hussars (and the hussars) or the mercenary troops as being ruthless, and from what I've read, they were that way.

But other than that...... lol. i don't know much else.

As someone who has a strong interest and pretty good knowledge of American history, yes, The Patriot was very inaccurate.

I'm involved with a group of Revolutionary War reenactors who were actually extras in that movie. They ended up hating the movie so much for its inaccuracies, they spit every time they say the word "The Patriot".

If the movie was presented to the public as simple entertainment, it would have been a fine, entertaining movie. But it was sold as being very accurate, which it was not.

2001 seems a strange choice for the list. It's probably the most realistic of the futuristic sci-fi films. The only thing it got wrong was the date.
Any of the Star-Trek films would have made a much better choice.

I agree, but it's funny, a futuristic movie should not be expected to be as accurate as a historical one. Don't think any of the sci-fi ones should be counted. Star Wars and Star Trek are um... fiction! :D

Fat Man and Little Boy, JFK, and Elizabeth all contain characters who were blends of two (or more) characters, to help move the story along.

No, they weren't in Elizabeth.

EDIT: Yes it was bad but I couldn't resist. :P

1984 wasn't on the list  :ph43r:

Elizabeth: The Golden Age was probably the worst movie I've seen in a little while... followed by Wild Hogs...

Apocalypto was so incredibly innaccurate I'm surprised Quetzacoatl hasn't just come down from the sky and cosumed Mel Gibson's soul

Mel Gibson seems to be a theme of the top 10 :P

Er, 1984 is a novel isn't it? Wait a minute, yes, they did make it into a film but wasn't that in the '50's?

Anyway, I think 1984 is very accurate as the atmosphere that exists in the book could indeed become a reality. Although the whole mind chip thing may be going a bit overboard, the sort of things that take place and exist in 1984 could be reality in a few hundred years.

Aye but there was a reason the book/movie was called 1984, and well 1984 didn't exactly appear like that did it ;)

Jules Verne wrote about u-boats, traveling to the space and so on... He also didn't got everything right (e.g. also not the time) but in the end the technological development happened in this direction.

I'm not too much a fan of science fiction/future prediction stories but actually you find often some truth in it (Well if it's not too crazy mambojambo).

I’ve read the book (didn’t liked it) and you are right. As Orwell described the future it’s not going to be. But the general danger of the “father knows best state” and “big brother is watching you” described in this book is a warning about a much more real danger considering the already available technological possibilities to spy on people, the current development in politics and the growing fear amongst the people (believing every rubbish the media is telling them).
