Kingdom of Heaven

I watched the Director's Cut version which was on a TV channel the other night, and it's a long version!  The film has fantastic fights and a very talented cast (especially Edward Norton).

The film has a deep underlying message.  Essentially it makes the point that war isn't necessarily the way to get peace in the Holy Land (or Kingdom of Heaven), and the character played by Orlando Bloom finds "success" with this idea.

Overall, a good film, but a bit too long to keep me fully immersed in the plotlines.

Kit gives Kingdom of Heaven:
3/5 - Worth watching!

I saw that too, on Film4. I had seen it before, but previously it had been a dodgy downloaded copy and I think the poor quality spoiled it. I enjoyed it much more this time.

Well about two hours in, with no end in sight, I felt my interest in the film waning until the point where I'd lost track of things. It was a good film but tooo long <_<

I always knew (and said) that there would be a third, but Catwoman?  <_<

I'd always hoped for a third film, and it was my understanding that it would be a cyber-terrorist Riddler as the villain (which to be honest, I think is a really good modern take on the old character). Maybe they're going to do two villains in one film like they did with The Dark Knight; Two-Face and The Joker both being in it?

I watched this too. I like the king who wore the strange mask he was very good actor! For the rest I found it very long too but great action.

Saw a little bit of Seven Times Lucky starring Kevin Pollak as a con man, and maybe half an hour of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind starring Sam Rockwell as game show impresario/CIA hitman Chuck Barris last night. Really liked what I saw.

District 9

An odd SF film done in the form of a semi-documentary. A bit grim, and a bit of a splatter-fest, so not for the kiddies, but very well done. It has an interesting premise, and not too many of the plot holes that tend to plague SF after the scriptwriters get in on the action. Well worth seeing if you can find a Cinema that's showing it.

An innovative style, which I think may make this an influential film generally.

On Vacation
Recently, I've seen the following:

THE FINAL DESTINATION
I can't believe I paid $13 to see this piece of crap. That's 90 minutes and $13 bucks I'll never see again. It's not even good enough to be a rental. Plot is sorely lacking, movie poorly executed.

G FORCE
If you have kids, they'll like it. Talking Hamsters entertain them. Not that great of a movie if you're an adult (but it's still way better than The Final Destination).

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS
Given the A-List cast of comedic stars, I was somewhat disappointed with the overall story and execution. Not as funny as I would have thought. On the plus side, Mr. T. has a great role. I pity the fool who doesn't like his character.

UP!
The best movie I've seen all year, by far. Great for the whole family. If you're an adult, you may even cry. Children won't understand the "sad" angle of the story - they'll just think it's neat that a house is flying. Brilliantly executed.

THE PROPOSAL
A nice comedy. Worth the price of admission. Sandra Bullock is pushing it trying to pull off a character who is clearly younger than she is, but somehow manages to do it. Ryan Reynalds is funny as usual. Betty White steals the show with her off beat character.

ADVENTURELAND
Weird little movie. The plot doesn't really go anywhere, the story lacks depth. However, it is different than any other movie I've ever seen, and so for that reason, it wasn't a bad rental.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Hmmm... I wanted this film to be as good as the first one, but felt it was either trying too hard or taking for granted the first film's success and just doing whatever it felt like.

Overall, I found the thing difficult to watch. Large chunks of history have been stepped over by "artistic licence" in this film, including the speech Elizabeth gives her troops on the eve of battle. Rather than mirroring (or even just copying) the understated but powerful speech Elizabeth actually gave, an empty patriotic slur was unleashed that paraphrased the original speech in only a singly sentence. Besides this, the film tried too hard to paint England as a David standing up to the Goliath of Spain.

The historical inaccuracies, for me, peaked at the execution of Mary Stuart that, rather like the real execution, felt clumsy. I felt it had been incorporated into the film for the sake of it. The execution itself, in another irritating break from reality, was quick and painless, save for the over-acting on the behalf of Mary's lady-in-waiting. In actuality, it took two (rather messy) blows to remove her head.

Then there was the design and look of the film. Elizabeth was constantly adorned in colours that over powered Cate Blanchett's acting. Blanchett is a great actress, yet I keep feeling she wasted her time on this film and perhaps should've left it at Elizabeth.

Throw in the over-complicated plot lines involving Clive Owen as Walter Raleigh and the whole film becomes a jumble of revised history and unrealistic alternative fantasies.

Overall, although Cate Blanchett's powerful acting was (like the first film) way above the mark, if you want a more realistic (and frankly downright better) interpretation of this era of Elizabeth's life, watch Helen Mirren's flawless portrayal of England's greatest queen in the Elizabeth I mini-series.

I might be a little late on this but watch Green Lantern: First Flight. Great movie, its from the same guys who did Batman TAS, Superman TAS, JLA/JLA United, Teen Titans, and other good Movies to DVDS such as Wonder Woman. So yeah check that and their other movies out, Batman and Superman Wanted is pretty good as well so watch that too.

The Wolfman, Legion, and New Moon all look interesting. Woody Harrelson is a tremendous actor, he can display such strong emotion with a simple look and give depth to an otherwise two-dimensional character..

I just watched District 9. It's a great film. Best thing I've seen this year.

Not an entirely original plot idea (Alien Nation springs to mind) but certainly more original than most sci-fi. Innovative filming style. Very realistic on the whole. Funny in places but never cheesy.
The visual style of the film seems to be very much inspired by Half-Life 2, which is interesting, because that usually happens the other way round, with films influencing computer games.

Overall I'd thoroughly recommend District 9.

GOOD! I'm not the only person on Earth who immediately compared D9 to Alien Nation.
Although D9 was a lot more fun and had a great viral marketing campaign.

I quite liked it, a decent family adventure movie. The characters are easy to care about and Brendan Fraser's always funny. Classy setup for a sequel too with that Atlantis book.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

I almost didn't watch it, but this one really got to me.

^My favorite movie of 2009! ^

And somehow Zombieland has taken over my life, including (possibly) competing on a human team against the zombies in a local campus wide war to the finish!

Black Dynamite is a perfectly done "blacksploitation" mockudrama. Everything, and I mean everything, from the costumes and characters to the dialogue and plot, are seamlessly cheesy late '60s/early '70s. I literally laughed all the way through it, mostly because in every scene there was something on the set, or in the background that was over-the-top corny.

Recommended companion: Hollywood Shuffle (1987).

I was on the verge. Emotionally complex for animated, and one of Pixar's best to date.
