As a union man, who also just finished being on strike due to a poor proposed contract, I find this a big step. Since companies are concerned with making money they may at times over look their workforce / human resources. Collective bargaining is sometimes a means to ensure fair treatment. Still, collective bargaining must not be abused.

Many of our states are considering a new labor law that makes it easier to vote to have a union.

Not a big fan of abuses on either side of it, really, but the deck being stacked the way it is, I'm in favor of making things easier for the people on the lines.

My company was trying some rather nasty tactics during the strike we just had, such as getting their management staff to work our positions as a form of scab labour. They even used their private police to break a picket line. Their proposed contract would have been sending us back 10 years or more with changes in work conditions. Thankfully mediation finally prevailed.

I tend to think like most social justice issues that the concept of "rights" can get in the way. To me its largely about balance. Both sides of any dispute need to have a similar level of power, or the less powerful will tend to be exploited. Currently I think that large corporations have too much power. The regulations which are intended to curb them are often not enforced because the large corps have the resources to tie the courts in knots. Smaller businesses can't, and find themselves over-regulated. Meanwhile individuals have power pretty much in accordance to their wealth. This makes a complete mockery of "equality before the law".

I definitley agree about the need for balance. There have to be obligations on both sides, too. Most of the time, the obligation requires some level of trust and good faith.

Unfortunately, when trust breaks down, not even the best set of laws can keep justice going.

Greed is not something we can really harness.
