I also don't care for the new generation of graphics either. The current consoles have so much more potential and that's been shown with almost every decent game release, which the Wii-U will demonstrate. Of course in a few years I have no doubt we will look back and be astounded by the comparison as we are with the PS2/PS3, but a lot of styles have been used that don't fade away. Such as cell shaded, pixel, comic sketch and so on. Zelda, Naruto games, Walking Dead Arcade, Borderlands as examples.
Realistic graphics don't really interest me anymore. When you see so many games with them, you kinda end up desiring a new artistic direction. It's especially strong in my case since I'm huge into art being an artist myself and seeing new or interesting art inspires me, and I see it happening in your case since you are as well.

Of course I'm alright with realistic graphics, but they don't stand out to me like they used to. But some games can end up having new gameplay mechanics simply because of the art style. Just look at Okami for example. Really beautiful game even though it wasn't realistic. And it wouldn't have been the same if it was.

My favorite art style in video games is probably cel-shading/comic book style art (although I appreciate a lot of other styles, don't get me wrong), and it has been for a while. I love everything about it, and it's part of the draw for me in some games, like for example Borderlands (which in itself is a fantastic series). But look at it. Seriously. This is what Borderlands was originally supposed to look like:

It looks good, but it doesn't stand out to me. If I didn't know what it was, and I looked at the other games, I probably wouldn't care to play it. But then you look at the style they switched to:

and it looks great like the first, but it also has the unique appeal the first didn't. And the switch from the first style to the second was drastic, and it actually ended up causing the woman who created the first style to retire from games for good. But Borderlands is better because of the new style.

Hell, even a more recent case, like for example Batman: Arkham Asylum/City, is supposed to look realistic. But look closely and you find out it's not. It has subtle differences and is actually painted and textured to look more like a comic book. And comic book art (which I want to do professionally) is very appealing to me. A super realistic Batman game I probably wouldn't enjoy as much if it didn't have the little stylization added to it, because I DO pay attention to such details. And that's what I want in games: stylization.

At least in the case of the graphics of this generation, I'm not too particularly impressed. Sure, they look good, but if you were by some weird chance, able to take some games and turn them into people who were artists, they'd probably have really similar or the exact same style. And that's not appealing to me. Art that's supposed to perfectly mimic reality and shuns anything outside it loses the creative soul in it that I find so great in art, if that makes any sense. I put artistic style over the clarity or resolution of graphics every time because of this. And when a bunch of people do the same style, especially if they're not the same game, it becomes depressing. It ends up making it rather stale, and art (in my opinion) should never be stale.

Fallen don't forget that new generation consoles don't just mean better graphics, heck current gen graphics are beautiful but with more power developers get more elbow room to improve gameplay, like open worlds, more complex AI, destruction and such, faster load up times and also better rendering/drawing distance.

Can't wait to see PS4 and Xbox games.

Halo 4 Screen shots.

It's not that realistic is getting stale to me, but that it comes with universal flaws. You can definitely notice this when it comes to environments, especially trees or grass. It can be this blur of dirt, grass and straws, which it usually is. The Arkham City style, is definitely what I'm into. It's realistic and animated. That's the medium that has the potential to go anywhere for fantastic results and an aspect of realism. I'm not that into cell shaded, though. But look at Naruto Chronicles and Ninja Storm or Broken Bond. With Chronicles, they're basically putting a time on the game of when it will be outdated.

Look at that. Everything. It was spectacular at first, but is terrible now. Then pixel art to me is definitely aesthetically pleasing and endures the passing of time. It too can be a tad realistic with its colors and depths, but it's still in that medium of course. That medium is just my spot of animation and realism. The blend of both together.

I also agree with the resolution when it comes to gaming. It doesn't matter how much it is to me in a lot of styles because a lot of styles don't require it. Basically only realistic ones.

@Stryke= All of those things can be done on cheaper PCs. Which is why I am probably staying with these generation consoles and PC.

That's really more up to the engine that is used. Look up Unreal Engine 4 for example, and then compare it to 3.

The short of it is that Unreal 4 should make developing games less time consuming (and likewise less costly) while improving on certain aspects in certain aspects of graphics.

Are you trying to insult Zed by saying he's poor because of the frugal choices he makes? Isn't that a bit rude and obnoxious?

Xbox Infinity Supposedly. Weird name.. Its not as catchy as a 360.

"Let's go play the infinity."

Doesn't roll off the tongue as well as "Turn on the ps4!"

Saying "PS3" or "360" is no different than saying "Samsung Blu Ray", "Apple Ipad" or "Ultra MEGA GUA250 AMD Quad-Core FX-9100 Processor, 20GB Memory, 1TB Hard Desktop PC." To me.

Just be human and say "Let's watch a movie or play a game!"
