This is probably my best Naruto picture yet. So I subsequently signed it this time. If you do enjoy it, I'd prefer you to like this post. It'll encourage me to do more.

Use: Gimp, mouse and default brushes.
Time: 5 hours
Original Image: From scratch, but based off of chapter 574.
I have other versions that are more realistic, but I choose this one because of the aura.

I liked the other one more. This one kinda has a flat face, and I'm not really liking the eyes. Or lips, or nose, or eye lashes. The facial region really. . .Nothing in the face really stands out enough. He kinda looks like he'd be a Yokai from a manga or something "Tale of the flat faced guy" or something.

Someone once said "be the you you wanna be", and that's just how I feel now to.

Everything was given depth. The other had lines, which were in the way. But it's just a preference. I was sort of going for a certain samurai manga appearance. Those are much more detailed with color, texture, light and depth.

I like it, seems to be a really nice take on the look it ultimately came out to be. But do you perhaps want to make a greater contrast between how long the hair in the back of his head is?

Or did you do it from that persective on purpose like he is turning his head or looking dead strait at something?

I'm not sure that's the term you're looking for. You also say from the perspective he is turning his head and looking straight. Each would have a separate contrast, so it's one or the other. But his hair is not that long in the back because his hair isn't that long there. Those go as far as the spikes do, but I went for a realistic touch so it's not as controlled and I determined the length from similar hair styles for samurai. It was usually wild tied up hair. But thanks for the comment.

It's weird because out of all the pieces you've ever done, this is the one I like the least. The things that Fox pointed out are just most obvious, but for a full critique I'd like to see the source picture.

I suppose what you're talking about is the color of it all. Because it definitely has the most depth out of everything I've done. That's the last thing that should be mentioned honestly. It's comparison is highly superior to any other I've done. But since you're set on the darkness of it all, the blending of the facial features, I went through the trouble to airbrush it some more. There's a limit that can be done because of the aura.

Not exactly a source image. Just used the pose. . . .

I honestly could not even recognize who the picture was. Even with the Mangekyou Sharingan clearly visible. That says something.

And are you seriously telling me that color in a digital PAINTING should be considered last?

That says your art school needs to be a lot cheaper.

I'm telling you that the last thing to critique on is the depth comparison of this and my previous.

The way you painted the skin reminds me of a porcelain doll:

The shading on the lower left side of the picture (his right cheek) looks awkward, especially with that reddish brown streak (Yes, I can see it). The spikes on the upper left look extremely artificial, even for a picture that aims for a more realistic interpretation of a shonen character. The shading for the eye region also looks really weird. It's too clean of an edge, which is weird because of how many little strands of hair you decided to emphasize and how jagged they are.

His bangs also looks like they were fried by a hair straightener. And I know what that looks like, especially since I've used one and my sister does as well, and I've been around girls who use them (badly).

Once again your painting style makes me think that you used a texture for the shirt. It doesn't even look like a cloth fabric such as cotton. It looks like dyed leather, and I have never seen leather that loose and foldy, especially for a shirt or cloak or whatever. And it definitely looks like a texture because I can see it clearly even in the darker shaded areas.

The nose reminds me of Michael Jackson (and there's no shading), and the lips are weird. You know that little groove in between the nose and the upper lip? The philtrum?

This thing:

You didn't paint one. That makes his lips even creepier.

And the sword and blood look like they were just added in in a couple of minutes "just because" if that makes any sense. Which by the way, it's pretty weird you added the blood since the area of the sword that shows moisture isn't even darkened like Masashi uses does for blood. So it very likely is water, which you could've painted (and I know you can) to show a reflective edge.

Porcelain dolls are beautiful.

I didn't use a texture. I can teach you a few techniques if you want. The process is a bit extended, but I'm sure I can remember it all. The one I used for the cloth was a complete white layer. Erase every other row, then use a blur wave. You can duplicate the layer and have a lower setting on the other one with vertical instead of horizontal.

Maybe it's your limited experience with anime paintings, but there is little to no impression of a philtrum because of the length of the facial features, since it is an anime and not an actual realistic picture.

Although everyone has an opinion and feedback is essential, as I wouldn't have gone through the trouble of brushing it up once more if I believed what others said weren't true. But the way they phrased it was the misunderstanding. What I don't need is someone to mention something that's completely inaccurate, such as shading of the nose or depth, which are undeniably there. No keen eye is needed. Judgement is fine, but without credibility, that is if anything, is what gets awkward. It could be another misinterpretation, as was your phrasing of flatness, but comments as "just because", "weird", "burnt hair", "creepier" or "too clean" are just meaningless. Nearly if not all of your adjectives. Your posts will be in consideration for next time, but I have little doubt it'll help considering they aren't for this particular style.

Those pupils are enticing. Also in the like the display of liquid on the sword in the background. Seems as if his eyes are too bigg for his head. If you glance at computer quick it kinda looks like roger from american dad dressed up as sasuke.....but this is still really good.

Yeah, it'll take a bit more practice to get out of the anime style of things. I've been doing it for too long. The challenge with the eyes was trying not to make it seem too clear, smudged or even opposite of both, being cloudy or sharpened. I should have simply done one, then duplicate it instead of trying to replicate.
