What language do you want to start with? I would suggest you start with C++ or Java. Java seems to be used a lot and people seem to be requiring Java programmers a lot. C++ is used in the gaming industry for all the big games. As far as byond goes they use DM language which is a customized language that has C++ and other stuff mixed in it.

There are games made with Java (like RuneScape) but it's preferred to learn C++ and whatever that coding language is used for making iPhone apps (which are becoming super popular and will overtake console gaming, and have made some people rich really fast).
