Fahrenheit 451 meets Full Metal Panic. Let us see if the show leans one way or the other. Or maybe they will alternate periodically and decide that after two episodes of a fierce battle defending a library and almost dying that it's time for a hot springs episode. |

There is no hot springs episode. Sorry. I know that made the show ten thousand times less interesting for half of you, but whatever. |

It's still doing the alternating thing like I guessed. Just makes it hard to classify it. You can't call it a serious show since there are all these minor (and funny) conflicts peppered in to lighten things up. You really can't call it a lighthearted show because of the major premise and how seriously that is taken. It's not a bad thing. Not like they can split it in half. And at least it's not too serious or light. Just means there are going to be episodes people like and don't like depending on what they are looking for in this show. |

That's why this show is a worthy successor to Baccano! for Mondays. It did the same thing by staying serious and engaging while throwing Issac and Miria in to get a good laugh. The trouble with some shows, like d'Eon, is that they take themselves too seriously when they get absurd (*cough*spontaneous cross-dressing*cough*) so when they become serious again, the impact is taken out of them. I stopped watching Bokurano because I didn't want to see 20-some episodes of heavy death scenes, but I felt nothing when one-armed-what's-his-face just died. (In fact, my thoughts were "Don't worry, I won't take away his knighthood. I'll just kill him.") Back to the topic at hand, (And since we rag on d'Eon enough already) it's good to see a show that knows how to take itself seriously while staying funny. (And ne'er the two shall meet) If the story keeps it's pace and has a nice big 2-3 episode conclusion, this will rank #2 for my favorite show this semester, behind Baccano! |

OK, so I really like this show. Libraries? War? Library War?! The problem is that it needed more episodes. You'll all see what I mean when it's over. But this is definitely a show that could have used another two or three episodes. That doesn't mean it's bad. It's a good show, it just needs more than 11 episodes to do it's thing. That and I just wish the original novels would get published over here, but it looks like I'll have to settle of for the shojo manga adaptation. |

Basically, the show is flawed, but it's never really so offensive that I got mad at it (besides the atrocious episode 10). The concept is so damn cool, it's a crime that they never really worked it more. Kasahara's character is poorly represented in that, despite being a very strong woman, is only portrayed that way when it is convenient for the story. She really doesn't need to cry that much, I think. This is one show where I felt the romance was a detriment. I never felt that the characters were properly fleshed out to make one care about their relationships. I agree entirely with Michelle in that the show is FAR too short to really do the source material justice. Even though I'm probably coming off as being overly harsh, there are good qualities about it. Again, the concept is extremely interesting, and the animation is consistently on a high level. Some of the characters (Komaki, Shibasaki, and Genda come to mind), are great additions to the show, and are oozing with personality. There were moments when the conflict between the Library Force and the Media Cleansing Committee goes beyond simply good vs. evil (I would love to see a spin-off focusing on characters in the MCC). All in all, it's a decent show that's not given enough time or solid, likable lead characters to really go where it's potential can take it. Besides, anything coming after Baccano! in that slot is going to seem rather dull in comparison. |
