Hi, I am Pameshlu, one of NATO's original founders. Much of the deeper history of NATO has been lost to a former forum, but I wanted to record some of it here for posterity, and I have been asked to do so. Some events will not be recorded here, as I simply don't remember the names or all of the details. Hopefully King Tom will add some things here as he has been here nearly as long as I have been. Our original and proper founder is Lord Galad. I found Lord Galad back when CN had a map and you could only attack those in your nation range and were within your geographic range. When I started CN I found those nearby and tried writing to them in game to get to know them. Few responded, but Lord Galad did and we struck up a conversation. I, along with King Tom another long time NATO leader, started out by joining the ODN. I liked their recruitment message and pulled King Tom with me. We both joined their "Nation Adoptoin Program" and King Tom was picked up right away. I however was skipped over. To this day King Tom's nation is larger than mine in large part due to the help he was given in the ODN. I was not happy with being skipped over at all, so I complained. ODN didn't like that either, so I left, and joined Lord Galad in the new NATO. When we started we had no big nations. Every one of us was under 3 K NS. We did not have aid programs or game guides or much of anything. We were about a dozen nations, all noobs, just trying to learn the game. Originally Lord Galad had a vision for NATO that was to give outside nations and alliances power within NATO itself, along the lines of the original NATO charter. Within about a week it was realized that was just not going to work and we closed the forums to that sort of influence. We had good recruitment to start and got up to about 20 nations. Zamboagna was a founding member, soon King Tom joined and Liberal Extinction came in to help out too. To my memory this really started around August 2006, but Lord Galad insisted it was in June, so NATO celebrates its birthday in June. Still, our early days were very rocky. NATO had, and still has, a committment to tech raiding. Since we were all new and did not know the game well, we had a number of run in's with folks. A member no longer playing the game Rico tech raided the then new OSF, which did not make them happy with us at all, and so they intimidated us by coming in and spamming our forums massivly. On the plus side though, King Tom turned that around and we became friends with the OSF for a long time. They showed us how to set up the forums better so that others could not do what they did. Soon after, King Tom and Zamboanga were on a normal tech raid when they ran afoul of the NPO. We were sure that the raided nation was a "none" but the NPO filled up King Tom's and Zam's war slots and they were both forced to pay reps in the millions of CN. For such a tiny alliance with such tiny nations, this was a serious hardship. Tech raiding was NATO's main source of new members. Long time nations such as Mavericks and Twinkledonia and even our former SoD Wolverine joined NATO due to tech raids and for NATO they were HUGE nations. Like over 10K NS! We invented government positions for them so they would stay. Two are still here. Yes, NATO used to recruit pretty much by force, and we got some of our best nations from it. For my part I was then, and still am now, primarily concerned with internal affairs. I created a Senate for NATO so we could pass laws. The first was the Articles of Censure, passed to create internal dicipline procedures thanks to Rico, who later left the alliance to cause trouble elsewhere. The only positions anyone held at that point were President, Vice President and Secretary of the Military, and the powerless President of the Senate. This was in probably October of 2006 and we were still a very small alliance. The senate was a bust, but NATO stuck with it for a while, passing a few laws to try and give the alliance some sort of order and structure. Libertarian Democracy was the model we were shooting for and for a while I think we got it right. We had one small war with the Imperial Republic. They tech raided one of our nations and were unrepentant. We went after them and forced them to surrender in about 2 days. It was a tiny war between tiny alliances, and no one else seemed to care. I also remember another small war that L_E led us into, but NATO was lied to on it, the reasons for war were all bunk, and NATO ended up apologizing for its actions. Can't recall who the players in that were though. During this time, the fall of 06, two notable events happened. The first was the near merger with the NADC. They came to us, two "Atlantic" alliances and wanted to merge. It was a close vote, but it was defeated and NATO remained independant. The real sticking point was the lack of tech raiding that the NADC allowed. This started the direct channel that Emperor Charles and I have had since that time, a channel that seems to have disappeared in recent times. The other event was our secret protectorate clause with IRON. By this time RL issues with Zam led him to find himself a "good friend" in IRON, Empyrica. Due to that connection the at that time neutral IRON, whom had cancelled all treaties with other alliances, was NATO's secret protector, a situation that went on with only a few in each government even knowing about it for many months. IRON did help NATO get out of a few minor scrapes but try as NATO might, IRON never needed NATO's help in return. Notably, NATO also lost its first and only spam war to IRON at this time. This leads us to NATO's first huge crisis of government. Zamboanga, Liberal Extinction and some of their RL friends were getting bored with such a small alliance. Recruiting was not going well. Our sign up bonus was 100 K and that was difficult for us to manage most times. If we got three or four new nations in a week it was a challenge to pay them the sign up bonus, tiny and small as it was. L_E and Zam wanted to make a name for themselves and the alliance, and therefore they went out into the OWF's and frankly, caused trouble. NinjaR and Starfox of the CIA were friends of L_E in RL. They were merging with others to form was was to become \m/. Frustrated with being in a small alliance, L_E and Zam, along with about a dozen other NATO nations, left NATO to join \m/. That was most of our government. This occured in January of 07, or there abouts. Others stepped up to fill the void. I led the way in creating a completly different government, the coucil system that we have to this day. King Tom become President thanks to his FA skills and contacts with many other leaders on Bob. (King Tom was SoS for a long time before this in a made up position, as we had no real charter or government at that time.) I took on the mantle of Secretary of the Interior to try and get our internal problems worked out. Wolverine, another nation recruited by force by NATO, became Secretary of Defense with the idea that NATO will be staying out of major wars and difficulties. Rejinx Wolf became Vice President and got us close to the MHA for the first time, still our longest and best friends. The position of Secretary of State was traded again and again with folks, including Kaiser Soza, who just disappeared. For months that was our government, and we kept a very low profile while we slowly tried to recruit nations and build up strength. (That has always seemed to have been NATO's greatest weakness in my mind, recruiting.) We survived this crisis, and went on to form a community here. We kept a low profile for the most part, and we had some succes building some members during this time, but we remained small none the less. We had good and close relations with \m/ now to, an aggressive alliance that looked for excuses to help us out militarily. Two events occured before about June of 07 that are worthy of note. The first is Dumb White Guy. A new member that Rejinx Wolf, our VP was using as a middle man in a tech deal, took Rejinx's $2 mil and ran, to GOONS. When we asked GOONS to let us have DWG, they told us what we could do with ourselves. This incident started NATO's hatred towards GOONS that persists to this day. Later, while Anu was working to bring us closer to the Initiative many of the older members would note that we like the Orders, FAN and \m/, we had a treaty with FAN by then, but we did not want to get close to GOONS. In my thinking, it is this incident with DWG that led to NATO's decision to leave \m/ when the UJW started. It was worth the diplomatic hit in the WF's. Fighting those 6 GOONS was really nice. Next was GW III. I, from the position of SoI, tried to lead NATO into war during GW III, and \m/ was willing to oblige. No one else in NATO government seemed to want it though. This was a low point for me in NATO, where I was being called "dictator" for honoring our treaty with \m/. NATO did not have more than a dozen wars during all of The GW III, and I for one was very disappointed with our showing. Soon after the /b/ incident started and the entire world was after them. It was a free for all and I let NATO members know it. Again, we had some members join in, but others were very angry with the idea of going after even /b/. After that I left NATO for three months due to a personality conflict with another government member and being really angry over being called a "dicatator." I returned later when King Tom recruited me back. I am NATO's longest serving member. I am NATO's #2 donor nation in terms of aid given, #1 until recently. I wrote the 1st charter, have served as SoI, VP, SoS, SoT, and President, and now AG. I created the original Cadet Program, I created the Treasury Department, and now I am trying to create the AG department, which has been over used in recent times in my opinion. There are others here in NATO that do good work besides myself. They have contributed much to this alliance and are often unsung due to lacking a public face to other alliances, and they should not be forgotten. No alliance is just the public figures or those that put themselves forward. NATO would not be here without the likes of Rejinx, L_E, Zam, and of course, Lord Galad. |

I'm glad..i believe it was cmdrChobo mainly that got to be great friends with King Tom and established a long lasting friendship between us. It makes me happy to see yall prospering so well. It was cmdrChobo indeed. KT only calls him "CC" so I had trouble putting it together when I talked to KT. Our first ever law, the Articles of Censure, was written due to Rico and his less than polite ways of playing the game. KT was up most of the night talking to CC and others regarding the situation, and he calmed things down. Good thing go, we were not but 20 members, all small, and we would not have had a chance in a fight with OSF back then. |

I request a revised history of NATO. My version goes something like this. The world of Bob was a pale and gray world, life was short, brutish, and cold, till god himself broke down through the heavens, parting the clouds in the sky to find our leaders and guide them to a small alliance they called NATO. NATO though small was a beacon of light in the world. They represented knowledge, as if they alone had bitten the apple from the tree. The leaders were, Lord Gauld the Magnificent, King Tom, the Brave, Pameshlu the humble, and Rejinx the wise. Together, fighting back chaos itself, these brave few set forth the path to enlightenment. Surviving all those who opposed them, they recruited to fill thier round table. Brave men and women such as Anu Drake, Pollexter, Duncan King, Hakim, Zam, and of course the Jewy Jewy Jew. NATO now stands for what is good in the universe, and fights for truth and justice over those who oppose liberty! NATO reigns high amung the universe, and will always previal! Something along those lines sounds better to me. |

I can't remember if I was involved in those talks or night. I'm sure I had been for a little while at least, I'd have to ask chobo or KT. I'll never forget Rico and his antics. Has KT hidden himself in the shadows of retirement? Where has he been? |
