The Man Behind the Curtain The Totally True but also Kind of Sort of History of Anu Drake’s First 8 Months in CN Note: this is based almost exclusively on my memory and I’ve made it a point not to do any research of any kind. Consequently, names, dates, events, colors and tastes may be contrary to established reality. But it is probably mostly correct. The Startness I entered the world of CN with a greenlight post on Fark.com in February 07. I hadn’t played any online game prior to this event, but I was a long time TotalFarker and the thread got me interested enough to sign up. Also having a furious disdain for SomethingsAwful led to my curiosity. I spent the first couple days studying the ins and outs of the game, reviewing the political reality of the alliance system and came up with the best way I could see to help beat GOONS. Instead of joining Fark (which I could see would not be conducive to growing my nation or imbedding myself into the leadership of the game), I chose a small alliance on the same team but not connected to them directly. My thinking was that I could help establish that alliance, which held a great deal of potential just based on the small public leadership I was exposed to, as a power player and diplomatically respected group. Then I could use that power to very slowly, very subtly influence public opinion to free Fark from destruction and, eventually, destroy GOONS. NATO I joined NATO and spent the first couple of weeks getting to know people and learning the culture. The alliance at the time was 66 members and we had 2 defense treaties. We were not exactly burning up the political world. I saw a definite weakness in the diplomatic corps and was moved to Secretary of State within a month. By the end of my first term, we had expanded to 150 members and 6 strong defense treaties. I had conceived of and administered the Aqua Security Summit, which saw NATO and MHA effectively exerting control of the sphere. With Fark under harsh terms and GOONS control, I focused efforts towards building NATO’s image as a diplomatic force. We were instrumental in the Sanctum affair that saw Atlantis be reformed on white. We created and directed the Common Defense Treaty to be a coalition for small alliances. Things were looking good all around. And we had this shiny new army. A Bit of Adventure War was the next step in the development of NATO. To be respected and to become a true treaty partner that could be relied upon in times of trouble, we had to prove that we could deliver. Over the next couple of months we had some golden opportunities to do so. If there is one tenet of military strategy that I firmly subscribe to, it is the concept of winning wars before a single bullet is fired. NATO has never lost a war, has never been subject to surrender terms, and has never had to pay alliance reps. This is mostly due to the fact that we choose our battles extremely carefully. By the time GWIV came around, we had won decisive victories against ITAO and ALMEA. The former coming to the defense of The Foreign Division and the latter a pure aggressive action, fought mostly because I wanted to destroy the Offspring bloc as a competitor for the Common Defense Treaty. Once Fark was free of their surrender terms, I pushed hard and got them into the CDT. It worked great for a small time, then they wanted to be the big kids in a bloc and it fell apart. Their departure marked the end of my first ambition of CN. I was no longer a Farker in this world, I was a NATOan. The Great Shiat Show When the Unjust Path was created, I knew that the time was now to move whatever collective strength I had amassed towards GOONS. There would never be a better opportunity to jump in and provide some small amount of relief power to the allied cause. Our move against GOONS surprised a lot of people, and angered even more. The words exchanged that week still haunt us. Most of it was because we did not support our MADP partners in \m/. To us, there was never much of a debate. M had spent the previous 2 weeks accusing us of stealing their members, spying on us, taunting us into attacking them, and general non-ally type of behavior. Their going to war against Polaris, whom we had grown much closer to in the previous 2 months, was the part that made their angry barbs after our war declaration tolerable. But of course the damage to our reputation was worth it in the end. We would enter on the side of Polaris because they were right, and because we were able to beat down on some GOON bastards. I take no credit for either the rise of Fark or the fall of GOONS beyond the part I played. Just wanted to give you a personal background of my first 8 months in CN, and why it is special to me, and why NATO will always be my home. |

o/ NATO o/ Anu Good summary, the \m/ affair went down just prior to my first jaunt into NATO politics, but from what I knew at that time this is very much in line of what transpired. Anu was one of the first people that I had the honor of regular communications with here at NATO and was actually my first of many big brothers and mentors. It truely has been an honor and I really do look forward to learning and watching you work your magic again. |

We LIVED it! ![]() Interesting read, I understand that it's entirely from Anu's perspective, but there was SO much going on between NATO and \m/ before and after. We gained a small pool of HUGE talent (Pansy, Zam, Dark Shadow and crew) when the children of \m/ tried to run their game.... It was, in many ways, my favorite period in my time in NATO. I guess many of those juicy details will be lost in the sands of time, at least in the written histories.

The \m/istory of NATO is certainly bizarre. To this day I don't believe we've reached a comparable level of intimacy with another alliance, and yet our bridges were since burnt more thoroughly than I thought possible. I know my emotions towards them were very unsettled as the war loomed. On the one hand their behaviour and policies disturbed me, and on the other hand some of my favourite Bobians lived there... In retrospect I'm fairly certain I would have left NATO, at least for a sabbatical, had we sided with the UJP. \m/ was intolerable, but the GOONS—I disliked the GOONS. |
