My other topic was a bit lengthy to write, so this topic shall be a Q&A only. Basically, I figure there are a lot of times where the Order and myself personally have made decisions, and I figure it should be enough for a good topic on discussions on why we did things when we did, and whatnot. So, on with the show. |

First, your other topic is epic, thank you for taking the time to do that. Second, I've always been curious as to how you viewed the near war between NATO and Valhalla back in October over Purple (our ties to UPN and Invicta, and the war of words between me and noWedge). Had that not taken a turn for a diplomatic compromise, how do you think it would have played out? Your meeting with us that one night on IRC, if you remember, was the beginning of the step back from war. |

This is a complex question actually. It relates to a number of things, in particular our excellence in multiple departments. 1. Foreign Affairs. Without a good core of FA people, an alliance has a hard time expanding. Whether it be making friends, or driving home points on enemies, a good core is important, along with steady direction. I've been providing the direction of the NPO Foreign Affairs since 2006. It's been stable, and we work on a steady pattern that keeps us well liked, and helps promote our point of view. 2. Economic Excellence: Our bank is easily the most organized system in the game. When we move money, we do it in the billions. This helps us rebuild after wars, and we're always coming up with new programs to help us in areas where we need it. 3. Military flexibility and continuously staying on top of game changes. We always check out the new game changes, and implement systems that work. We've changed our military system more times then I can count, and it's helped keep us on top. While not everyone is the top notch fighter we want them to be, our over-all co-ordination can overcome that. In the past couple of wars, we didn't have a single stagger messup. Other areas that help us a lot are a steady leadership, and a large membership. We've kept steady leadership now since we began, and it's really helped the fluidity, and looking at the big picture. A lot of the I/o's know how to contact others besides just using the computer, and it means that a decision can be made at all times. Finally, the large membership gives each of our departments a large staff, allowing them to work efficiently. We have a LOT of jobs, and they all get filled pretty easily. It helps that good workers rise. |

The meeting followed our policy of treating our allies equally, and working to make sure they don't fight. I'm not actually sure what our response would have been had the meeting failed, but it probably would have been to make sure the fight ended very fast, with as minimal damage to all our allies as possible. I don't see if having gone to a major war, as we were kinda pissed that our name kept getting thrown around everywhere. |

Interesting question. Maintaining a solid Hegemony that allows for the security of our members is the real answer. It seems like a cop out, but the whole purpose of alliances is to protect the membership. By fostering an environment where our nations are safe, we have "won the game". |

1. Get contacts in a lot of alliances. You'll hear a lot from different people, and be able to piece together what's actually happening in a situation from the stories from different alliances. If you get good at bluffing, you can usually get the full story out of someone. I've bluffed my way through plenty of situations. If you know just enough to drop hints, most people fill in the blanks. Knowledge is power. 2. Make sure you always have your own interests at heart. While they usually coincide with your allies, make sure to protect your own interests. 3. Have a good staff. I have a full upper level diplo team, along with all the regular ambassadors, and I have a full political analysis bureau. While I like to do my own analysis, it helps to have other people thinking of ideas, and it can fill in holes that are missing. 4. Keep close contact with your staff, and keep them in the loop for the most part. Make sure they have important ground rules to keep. For example, don't let your ambassadors offer treaties. Make sure it comes from you, or a senior officer you authorized to make the offer. |

I'm curious as to how the Order balances conflicts between its allies. What goes into your thought process when resolving differences between groups you consider close? |

How do you keep your FA team engaged and active? How many ambassadors does NPO have at its disposal? |

You would ask that ![]() Dilber ducks. I usually listen to the stories of both sides, and then figure out what actually happened. After that, tends to come a lot of yelling at both sides. If it's a first time thing, I'll usually sit in and moderate. If not, I'll act as a messenger back and forth for backchannels. I'll usually help both sides think of something that makes both happy, and then I keep up on it until it gets done. |

As much as I hate to say it, a lot of it is busy work. I use them for other stuff, like background negotiations, and for certain alliances that I don't know well, analysis. We're actually doing some reforms at the moment that I can't go into yet because they aren't finalized. We have a lot of ambassadors, but the one downside is a high turn over rate. |

Im kinda of curious with you heading up the FA how do you analyze what is going on in the OWF as far as the meaning behind certain treaties and such. It seems to me their is always a rush of these sorts of things just prior to a major outbreak of some sort. So I guess my question is how do you read between the lines and how do you respond to your conclusions as it seems your pretty close most of the time. Also can we please have a new diplomat to our alliance. You took speer away from us. Edited by Bud, Jun 14 2008, 01:47:54 AM.

Apologies for the delay, I had eye surgery, and couldn't see the screen ![]() I tend to look at trends. Treaty signings, who's flaming who, etc etc. If it's something I deem important, I go to other leadership contacts I have around CN, and see what they heard. By cultivating contacts, and piecing together stories, you can usually figure out what's going on. I also tend to analyze things based off practicality and history, and who's involved. If you look at the people involved, there are patterns as well. As a side note, I want to be an Intel Analyst in real life, so this helps ![]() Also, will do. |
