Hey guys! this is a neato carnaval you got here! I like it! Though i'm not currently in a leadership position, i hope my insight as being a leader for 2 years, give or take, may be helpful :) I am however owner/operator of the Hard RoK Cafe! For those of you that don't know me, I'm Pale Horse, currently in the alliance Ragnarok. Given the history between NATO and the first alliance I started way back in the day, OSF, I'm thrilled to see yall prospering so well! We'll save the history discussion for another time ;) now down to business:

Trolls. Good trolls know exactly what to say to push buttons and get a response from whomever they are trolling. A good deal of the time they will troll you on a topic not relevant to the OP and derail the convo for a good deal of time. Some hold ancient grudges and will take any opportunity to take a stab at you. If you give them a response in irritation or anger, they get what they are wanting and will continue to do so. Feeding them will spread like wild fire and then you'll have more trolls and eventually thread lock. I have found the best way to deal with them is one of 3 ways.

#1: Ignore them outright. It may take everything in you to do so, but remember, you reply mad, you're making them happy and the cycle will continue.

#2: Reply with pure and simple facts in a professional manner. Dont add any personal attacks or slight stabs. Post the facts and move on. Don't get caught up in the circle debate where person A trolls, person B replies with facts, person A replies with the same facts worded different, ect ect.

#3: Roll with it. This IS the hardest one IMO. Instead of firing back, spin it into some sort of a joke. This one is a little tougher, cause if you don't know how to joke in a manner that won't be the same as attacking back then you'll not accomplish the meaning of this option. A good example of this would be replying to a troll with "awww we <3 u too." In other words, somewhat kill em with kindness.

Well, i hope i did it rite :P Come by Ragnarok forums and RoK out and have some drinks in the Hard RoK Cafe!!

I might go further in that there are a few kinds of trolls.

I think your piece refers to one type of troll, the ones without positions of power who basically are only out to annoy (West of Eden is a recent example).

Some trolls DO have political sway, and may have other purposes such as trying to present a dominant image...I would argue in many of these cases confronting them may be the best option.

A troll in a position of power often is out to make a statement, not so much to create an argument to "win", keep that in mind. If I call Bigwoody for a slimey creep in an announcement of his and make references to his past in GOONS, I basicly single out TORN/him as an enemy of TOP and overtly trash TOP-TORN relations for everyone to see.

That is something that you deal with on the backroom, I have played out my cards, and I am appearantly confident that they are much better than what woody has. He can seek assurances in private that I'm overplaying my hand, he can try to get more support, as what I just did would probably be a turn off for various alliances, it will also make it clear where I stand.

But how to deal with it in public? Do not show weakness, the problem many have is that they are too quick to snap right back and snapping back order to not show weakness, but then you are walking straigth into the trap set by someone that most likely is calm and calculated as he sits there, sweetening the flamebait. It's an interesting psychological game, but the trick is to remain calm and politely imply that he is bluffing.

This is exactly what I was trying to convey in more detail than I could muster.

So...yeah that

What is your opinion of alliance government working as trolls? Do you find it to be undignified, or does it have its purpose?

Also, lol at "I love you too." I use this one myself.

Recently, Andromeda went to war and later on in the WF the alliance they were attacking responded, basically the response was just a cut and paste of quotes that may or may not have happened (cause they can be altered). In the WF the leader of andromeda was out of pocket and not bale to respond as fast as the trolls and some of the leaders of CN were able to respond. it seemed that everyone took the defender's sut and paste as gospel, and started to trash Andromeda. Some people, including myself, did not foster an opinion based off of one side of the argument, but others were practically screaming for blood.

So how do you control not just your OP, but respond to your advesary's OP, in a way to 1. not offend others 2. Sway public thinking that your evidence (which was screenshots) is better than your advesary's?

Ah, yes, i definitely agree on the different types of trolls. That's why I placed in there 3 different ways to handle them. Some types, ignore, others if you respond do so in a manner that has facts to counter, but it's best not to troll back IMO. Be the bigger man(woman) and state facts and ignore the hostility is all i'm sayin. Firing back only raises the ante and makes both parties look like fools :)

Also, Hai Anu! long time no speaky
