(I decided it's time for my first review, so here it is! It's pretty lengthy, so I'll have to post it in two parts)

GUITAR HERO: ON TOUR Review

Guitar Hero is a well-known franchise for all gaming consoles. Hitting mulitcolored dots with a fake guitar and rocking on-screen was a pastime for many. However, the series has never left Wii, Playstation 1-3, or Xbox 360...until now.

Guitar Hero presents its first portable game, labeled Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS. Let's get started with this review.

Story: 5/10

The story, as of all Guitar Hero games, is very weak. You play in a band that's basically touring over the world. You might see a couple of cut scenes here or there, and after a gig, you’ll read comments from reviewers and other people, as well as getting offers from companies. You earn money to buy clothes, new guitars, and new characters. But story never really mattered in Guitar Hero games.

Gameplay: 9/10

The gameplay in this game is pretty unique. To play this game, you'll need to insert your Guitar Hero: On Tour game in the DS Slot, and insert the Guitar Grip needed to play this game in the GBA Slot. Then you'll need to turn your DS sideways, so if you're right-handed, the touch screen is to your right and the top screen is to your left, and vice-versa. The Guitar Grip comes with a handy-dandy hand strap so you can play comfortably. After you are done setting up, the familiar part comes: hitting those colored dots in time with the music. You have to strum using the stylus (or the special guitar pick) to play the notes, and hold the right button. It'll simulate playing a guitar, in a weird sort of way. There are also lots of new gimmicks in Guitar Duels like using the DS Mic to blow the flames off your guitar when it catches on fire. However, unlike other GH games, this game only has four buttons, but still provides a challenge even for its size. This game comes with 25+ songs. It's only a little compared to the other games in the franchise, but hey, it's a DS game.

Graphics/Visuals: 6.5/10

Since this game is for the DS, the graphics have been toned down from the other Guitar Hero games. The characters are kind of polygon-ish and not smooth looking, but it’s okay. You’ll spend most of your time looking and trying to play the music than looking at your band sing and dance.

Sounds/Music: 9.5/10

What’s a Guitar Hero game without music? In Guitar Hero: On Tour, you’ll receive a nice new set of songs and tracks, as well as some old tunes thrown in the mix. As I mentioned before, there are only about 40 songs in this game, and so it feels quite limited. That was the only reason I brought the score down a tiny bit. You’ll find at least one song that you’ll like in the roster of songs available.

Length and Hardness: 3~10/10

The game has a medium length in its Career Mode, although there’s plenty of other things to do in this game. Rock out in a short jam in Quick Play, or challenge somebody in the new Guitar Duels mode. You’ll also probably spend your cash buying new outfits or guitars for your character. You’ll also probably find a friend to play against in the game’s multiplayer mode (which is explained next). With all that in this game, it’ll last you a pretty long time if you play a normal amount. As for difficulty, it varies. You can set your game on Easy, Medium, Hard, or Expert. These settings apply to Career Mode too, as well as Quick Play and other modes.

Multiplayer: 7/10

You’ll need another player with the another Guitar Hero: On Tour to access multiplayer mode. There are four things you can do in multiplayer: a co-op mode where you have to play a song together, a quick play mode to see who does better in a song, and a Guitar Duel mode. It’s an average amount of stuff, really, and that’s why I brought the score down.

Overall Rating: 8.5/10 for normal players, 9.5/10 for Guitar Hero fans.

This game is really fun, even if you’re not a Guitar Hero fan. This was also my first Guitar Hero game, and I liked it, so I guess a Guitar Hero fan will like it to because it’s portable and has unique gameplay. Too bad you can’t play it on the upcoming Nintendo DSI (which lacks a GBA Slot).

I highly recommend this game to every gamer, because it is a nice, portable game that lots of people will enjoy. It's pretty fun to whip out if you're bored. I'm not forcing you to get, cause it's your life.
