Training Request - Capoeira; Zxaine Fisher

Ken awaited the arrival of the girl in the Gym. He had made this out of a special request, so the Gym would be completely bare save for the two of them. This was going to be a learning experience for her so he wanted to make sure she was in the safest environment possible for them to do it. He waited at the entrance for her to arrive, the keys to the place in hand as he stood leaning against the wall. His hand shot up to cover his mouth for a wide, indulgent yawn. The first thing they would do when she arrived was see how skilled she was to begin with so they could work from there. He just hoped she was ready.

Zxaine walked up to the gym, a bag slung over her shoulder carrying her usual things for gymnastics. Tape, chalk, anything she could possibly need honestly. She wore a pair of 3/4 length, loose fitting gym pants and a deep pink gym top. Sneakers, an unusual item for the girl, were on her feet. Her hair was pulled up in a tight bun, held tight with three or four elastics, it wasn't going anywhere.

She saw the teacher already there and trotted towards him. Her smile was bright.

"I hope I didn't keep you waiting. I came as soon as I got message you were ready." She flashed a smile and waited for him to tell her what they were going to do and how they were going to start.

Ken raised a hand to her. "No need to apologise, I haven't been waiting long." He said, before turning with a smile and unlocking the Gym. She seemed to know it well by now, so at least he wouldn't have to introduce her to such a thing. They would walk in together, and the teacher had little to say to her at this point so he kept his mouth shut. He motioned towards the beam for her to set up in that general direction, before proceeding to loosen his tie and pull it over his head. After a few quick motions, he'd undone all his buttons and slipped his dress shirt to the floor as well, revealing a simple dark singlet for training purposes.

"I must confess, I'm not an expert on this matter. But I looked as much as I could." He said, shrugging lightly as his hands flew into his pockets. "But I called a student who will be able to help you more. So we'll work on it together." Ken added, looking to the time. He should be here soon.

"No need to apologise, I haven't been waiting long."

Zxaine followed Ken into the gym. As the beam came into view she smiled a bit, that equipment would always be her friend. She set her bag down beside it and resisted the urge to hop on. She was here for a different kind of training and so she would simply sit and begin removing her socks and shoes. Training barefoot was always prefered on mats, after all, sneakers are designed not to slip and can cause rips.

"I must confess, I'm not an expert on this matter. But I looked as much as I could. But I called a student who will be able to help you more. So we'll work on it together."

"Any help is more then I could do by myself, and I appreciate it." She smiled, though a puzzled look crossed her eyes. Another student was coming? She wondered over who it could be that would know about Capoeira. "Oh, another student?" She actually looked a bit excited about that. "Anyone I know?"

Fashionably late as usual, the whirling dervish with the rainbow frock of hair sauntered into the gym. He carried a gym bag slung over his shoulder with fresh, clean clothes for after their lesson; for now he was dressed in a very simple all black under armor training set, sleeveless top, shorts cut to the knee, shoes cut down to barely be considered footwear anymore. Perfect for the dance he was asked to aid in instructing.

Ken's message wasn't very forthcoming, he'd simply requested that Darrien meet him in the gymnasium to assist him with a special training project. He never said who, or why, only that another student had requested a tutoring session in the art of Capoeira, the Brazilian dance art the witty charmer was known for.

"Anyone I know?"

"Sensei, my dear, I'm at your will and disposal." He was upon them quickly, wasting no time to begin stretching, rolling effortlessly from upright to palms down in fluid cartwheel motions, tight flips, and rolls to either side.

"Zxaine Fisher, this is Darrien Hessel. He would be the resident expert on what you're trying to accomplish." Ken introduced. While he knew that they were in the same class, he also knew that some of those classes made it impossible for normal social reaction. They might have seen each other. They probably had. But meeting each other was something he could not be sure of, so why not introduce them! He gestured towards Zxaine once more, giving her encouragement in the form of a smile. "Why don't we start with you showing us your skills, and our bright haired student can work from there. I'm afraid my knowledge is only second-rate, so D here may do more training than I will." He informed, being honest with her about the whole situation.

But Ken would not let her fail, and he would not sit by and simply watch. "However, I'm here to give if you need me." The happy demeanor would hopefully see her through.

"Zxaine Fisher, this is Darrien Hessel. He would be the resident expert on what you're trying to accomplish."

She flashed a bright smile to Darrien, she'd never met him face to face before. She may have seen him around a few times but meeting people was never her strongest suit, and usually happened by accident. This was another of those times. She watched the rainbow haired boy do a few flips after he finished stretching and she grinned. He knew his stuff.

"Alright. Thank you so much for your help Darrien." the girl finished her own stretching and stood up.

"Why don't we start with you showing us your skills, and our bright haired student can work from there. I'm afraid my knowledge is only second-rate, so D here may do more training than I will."

The girl rolled her shoulders idly and nodded. She looked to an open stretch of floor. That was perfect. She lept into a back handspring before stepping out and going the opposite direction. Aerial cartwheel into a backflip, she finished with a full twist layout. She landed, facing away from the guys. She let out her breath. Now to go back. A back somersault led into a series of back handsprings, one instantly after the other before she finished with an acrobatic flip. She smiled at them, hoping her skills were satisfactory. She hadn't really done much of the difficult flips because, well, they required a lot of momentum and were usually reserved for the vault.

"So... am I up to par?" she questioned jokingly. She knew she was at least halfway decent.

"Alright. Thank you so much for your help Darrien."

A smirk quirked the corner of his mouth.

"Why don't we start with you showing us your skills, and our bright haired student can work from there. I'm afraid my knowledge is only second-rate, so D here may do more training than I will."

He nodded to Ken, then Zxaine in turn, smirk broadening into a devious grin. He watched her movements intently, carefully taking in her body control, her fluidity. Something was lacking, something innate that couldn't be taught, that she had in herself somewhere, just had to find it and open that door.

"So... am I up to par?"

"You're not short on acrobatic ability, that much is certain, and your muscle movements are tight and contained. There was, however, something missing that I've seen glimpses of in your gait, in your idle motions when you speak and listen." He retrieved his Aeon from his bag, vaulted into the air, bouncing from a weight rack up to the backboard of a long forgotten basketball hoop, swinging himself upward, catching the low hanging rafter with his legs. Disconnecting a wire from the PA speaker box, he connected his device and cued up A bit of traditional Brazilian beat music.

Dropping down, he landed deftly in a three point stance, then turned to the girl. "Dance with me." he spoke the command lightly, beginning to swing his legs around in vast circles, gauging the girl's rhythm as she moved herself. "DO what feels natural, don't be embarrassed to show off what you can do."

As the music began to play she lifted one brow, her foot starting to tap in time to get the rhythm. She smiled as the beat picked up and she began to move with the sound of the drums. Her movements were fluid, almost snakelike as she picked up the pace. She danced around the boy, feigning and twirling away.

"Me? Embarrassed?" she did an aerial cartwheel over one of his swinging legs, her timing based off his own movements more then the music. If he was the teacher, then it was better to base her own movements on his. She mimicked his own motions for a moment, her slender legs swinging wide. As the music started to come to an end she moved in more measured movements, keeping her limbs moving freely without them being too wild. Finally it would come to an end and she rested one hand on her hip. She rather liked that music and she hoped more would be following shortly.

"That was fun." She flashed a bright smile at Darrien.

"Good, good. Now that we're nice and loose, let's kick it up a notch, shall we?" he said as the music ebbed away. Flipping backwards onto his hand, he pushed up into the air, rolled once, then landed fluidly into a break dance style windmill, fanning his legs up and out as he turned. Two full revolutions, down to the floor on all fours, up into a handstand seamlessly.

Upside down for the moment, he looked the girl up and down. "Without the music this time, let's try inverting. Perform the same routine, but this time try to remain upright on your hands rather than your feet." His tightly toned arm muscles twitched and flexed with each movement. Each flip, slide, thrust and glide performed perfectly, as if being on his hands were as organic as standing on his feet.

After this, the real meat of their session would begin...

A flash of nervousness crossed her features for a moment before it was gone. She glanced at her right shoulder, rotated it, then nodded to Darrien.

"Alright then. On our hands it is." The girl promptly bent backwards. Her hands flat on the ground she grinned and pushed her legs off the ground. One of her legs tensed and she lifted her right hand before swinging her leg wide to spin her to face the other boy. Her right arm wobbled slightly, but held up and she smirked. She could do this.

The teleporter mimicked his motions, her legs giving her the momentum needed for spins and flips as she mirrored the boy. Her arms weren't as strong as his, but they were enough to support her own weight, and that was all that mattered.

The slightest flinch in her musculature, the most minute tremble as she executed the movements would be picked out and noted by her tutor. Darrien watched intently as the girl did her best to mirror his movements, a sly grin playing at his face. "Keep going." he instructed even as he stopped to observe.

Now, for the fun part.

A rack of red rubber dodge balls lined the wall to the far side of the gym, which Darrien retrieved quickly to use for the next phase in her training. "Complete the routine, hands or feet, without allowing a ball to strike you. Speed, agility, and stamina will only get you so far, creativity and reaction are equally, if not more important." He spoke idly before beginning a quickly timed salvo of projectiles high and low at the girl without so much as a glance toward the teacher that had arranged this impromptu session.

She watched as he wandered off, blinking her eyes as she did. The girl slowly returned her feet to the ground and turned to watch Darrien walk towards those red rubber balls. Dodge ball? As much as she loved the game she didn't quite get it.

"Complete the routine, hands or feet, without allowing a ball to strike you. Speed, agility, and stamina will only get you so far, creativity and reaction are equally, if not more important."

Shiiiiiiiiiit.... he is gonna throw them at me She managed to think before the first one flew, right towards her midsection. the girl twisted and threw her hands against the floor, spinning away from the ball to move into a backwards roll as the second one barely missed her knees. Back on her feet again she did an aerial cartwheel to narrowly miss one near her shoulder, another barely grazing the inside of her calf. As she landed she allowed her feet to slide into a full split to duck under another, falling against her forward knee. The girl rolled and rotated her legs in the air, spinning on her shoulders and neck before using the momentum to propel herself to her feet again. She glanced over as more balls came dynamiting towards her. A frown pulled her lips tight and it was a pair of back handsprings to avoid the projectiles.

This was going to get tiring rather quickly if it kept up at this pace, as it was she was lucky to be in one spot for 3 seconds before the incoming balls would require her to move her butt out of their way.

He maintained a steady salvo, keeping a repetitive, moderately consistent pace. Careful not to hit her directly, he outlined her moving form, aiming where her momentum would take her next, slightly high or low, alternating inside and out, allowing her to determine if she were to be struck or not. After a fair time, no more than a few minutes, his canon fire abated, allowing the girl a moment's respite.

"Not bad, not bad at all." he spoke casually, sliding a hand through his hair, allowing a rainbow to splay about his head. Spinning a leg sweep in front of her, rolling back onto his hands into a headspin, legs windmilling about in front of him. After a full revolution, he thrust himself into the air in a full back flip, landing lightly on his hands, cradling down to his shoulders, smoothly rolling around to his hands and knees, only to repeat the leg sweep motion once more in reverse, then returning to his rocking ready position.

"Now, the real training can begin." he trailed off, flipping a stray lock of hair from his face. "Muscle memory is best when they're broken down. I've always thought it best to learn by doing. Take a moment to refresh and recover yourself, then come at me with what you've learned. Be creative, incorporate everything at your disposal into your dance." Capoeira was, after all, interpretive. All it really requires was for you to find your rhythm, everything else links together in time with your inner beat.

The girl panted lightly as they finished that session up, this was harder then she'd expected but that was good.

"Not bad, not bad at all."

She waved one hand, before bending in half and resting her hands on her knees to catch her breath. She hadn't done that much acrobatics in awhile, she really should keep up better. After 30 seconds or so she finally caught her breath and got her second wind. The girl straightened up and rolled up on the balls of her feet, stretching out her calves.

"Now, the real training can begin. Muscle memory is best when they're broken down. I've always thought it best to learn by doing. Take a moment to refresh and recover yourself, then come at me with what you've learned. Be creative, incorporate everything at your disposal into your dance."

The girl looked at her leopard, who trotted towards her with a bottle of water in his maw. She twisted off the cap and took a small drink, not wanting to get a side stitch or anything after all. Recapping the bottle she tossed it in the air and the cat leapt up, catching it in his mouth and trotting back to where he'd been watching.

"Alright then." She smiled and took one step towards the boy before bursting into motion, torso twisting she half leapt from the ground, twisting her torso towards the floor and planting her hands. The girl continued the twisting motion, using her legs for leverage doing a sort of sideways hand walk while spinning. When she'd gotten enough momentum she lifted one hand off the floor and sent herself into a tumbling movement, shoulders pushing against the ground as she sent one of her legs to try and sweep his legs from under him.

"Alright then."

This would be his favorite part. The girl charges, twisting and twirling, marrying her gymnastics background with the dance art he'd been working with her on. He falls into his ready stance, rocking his weight side to side, using his toes and ankles to push back and forth.

She finishes her pirouette motion with a sweep at his legs, driven by momentum generated by her shoulders. When her weight dropped back, as she propelled herself forward the dervish kicked off the ground with his right heel. Pushing backward, running against the air to create a counter-momentum, he pushes into a backflip. Timing his trajectory just right, he's completely upside down as her legs enter the space where his used to be. Planting his hands on her right thigh and left calf, he pushes back so that he lands a full stride and a half away from her, rocking back and forth, breathing evenly as though he expelled next to no effort. "You have to stay close, if your opponent can create distance you can't chain your attack and your defenses."

She grunted nearly silently as he used her own momentum to push himself away. The girl allowed one more twist before using the movement to propel herself back to her feet. She rocked on her toes and the balls of her feet lightly, her movements bouncy and energetic. She listened intently to him, the leopard also doing the same.

"You have to stay close, if your opponent can create distance you can't chain your attack and your defenses."

She nodded to signal she understood and was in motion again, she paced in a cat-like manner, her head lowered ever so slightly with a calculating look. She didn't expect to win in this little spar, but she intended to do her best, and that required thinking. She was in motion fluidly, her muscles barely twitching as they prepared to lunge, sent her body into a series of aerial cartwheels, looking like she was going to go for an in air attack. However, as she closed the distance she suddenly dropped down and sent her right leg towards the boy's chest. Pressing her hands against the floor she prepared to push herself back to her feet in the same motion should she make no contact at all.

So what had Ken been doing? A surprise for both parties... This was as much a test for one party as it was for the other. But he highly doubted Darrien knew that.

In a flash his hands rest on the boy's shoulders.

"If I may, D-kun."

They'd switched positions and now it was Ken in the air to receive the burnt end of Zxaine's hit. If she'd land it. But it was simple. At the last moment of her flips as the kick sails ahead, he fluidly moves to fade to the left at the point whereby she was throwing leg out. A hand grips against her ankle and his natural strength (No powers needed here!), he holds her steady and forces her back. Keeping hold.

"Less of your calculating." Grin. "When fighting, the more you do before your attack, the more time you waste. If you flip consistently at me, what's my reaction? Fade left."

He raised a hand before finally dropping her ankle after guiding her gently to her landing.

"Less is more. It's your first lesson, don't be upset if you falter on things. No one becomes an expert after a single hour or so of work."

He reassumes his ready stance, transferring his weight from side to side lightly, like a cat ready to spring. Typically, were this a normal fight or even a typical sparring match, he'd be offense offense and more offense, but he was teaching, and it wasn't his style to teach with the berating style some adopt when given the opportunity. She stalks forward with her catlike prowess, then launches herself into the air. At the conclusion of her first aerial wheel, he feels a pressure on his shoulder.

Just like that, he went from allowing himself to fall to his hands to spring into a defensive windmill kick, to the sideline where Ken had previously stood.

"If I may, D-kun."

"Please, sir. As you will." he speaks respectfully, shaking a bit of sweat from his still perfect hair. He watches the teacher shift quickly and catch her ankle, forcing the girl's momentum to reverse, then stop.

"Impressive sir, perhaps you and I may one day soon have the opportunity to have a training session?"

Her leg was stopped by the teacher's firm grip and she kept putting force behind it, after all, this was a training exercise. Giving it her all was important.

"Less of your calculating. When fighting, the more you do before your attack, the more time you waste. If you flip consistently at me, what's my reaction? Fade left."

She took in what he said and as he finished would twist her body so that her arms held her whole weight. As her arms flexed to take the weight her other leg shot up and her body twisted enough to send her heel at the teacher's stomach. Less movement before then? Ok. Got it. Her right arm quivered and she grit her teeth as she forced her body to take the weight, to take it and not colapse. Anger at herself bubbled in her eyes, stupid pride caused this weakness. That was something she'd have to work on.

"Better?" She responded light heartedly, casting a glance over shoulder at the teacher with a bright smile.

He tossed a glance over his shoulder. "I always have time, D-kun. Just stop by my office and make a time."

Given that he had already let go of Zxaine's leg, when the other came at him he gripped onto it again. A serious expression crossed his features suddenly, but it was gone from his eyes in the next moment. As her arms threatened to give way under the pressure, he let her go again with simple force.

"Better?"

"It might have worked on someone else." He said, grinning towards her. A simple pat to Darrien's shoulder as he looked to him again. "Thoughts?"

"I always have time, D-kun. Just stop by my office and make a time."

Good to know, he was always eager to work on his skill set. He'd seen flashes of what Ken could do, both in this training instance and around the school; he didn't think he could win a match with the educator, but he'd definitely provide him his greatest challenge.

The girl twists and lunges an attack at his stomach quickly, to which Darrien nodded approval. She was scrappy, he'd give her that.

"Better?"

"It might have worked on someone else."

He smirked at the teacher's assertion. Her attack was well founded, and in a contest between her and another student it would have certainly altered the tides.

"Thoughts?"

"You need to find a balance between action and reaction, once you've launched your initial attack you need to abandon all calculation, lest you find yourself caught up on trying to predict what your opponent will do next." he speaks sagely, shaking a bit of perspiration from his hair. "Well done for a first lesson, you've got a handle on the essence of the art. You still need to practice, find your own combat rhythm and link it together with your personal talents, but you seem to be on a path headed in the right direction."

He turns to face Ken and smirks devilishly. "As for your performance, ten out of ten on function, though I'll have to dock you style points. Using the same block twice in a row? Tsk tsk..."

After her final failed attempt she lay on her stomach on the floor, sweat beaded on her skin before falling to the ground under her. Her breaths beat back against her face as she tried to regain her cool, she'd tried too hard. She didn't let it just happen. Always trying to be in control. She closed her eyes and rested her forehead against the floor.

"You need to find a balance between action and reaction, once you've launched your initial attack you need to abandon all calculation, lest you find yourself caught up on trying to predict what your opponent will do next."

She raised one of her hands in acknowledgement, her breaths still hard and hot as she tried to catch a wind. Not trusting her voice at this particular moment.

"Well done for a first lesson, you've got a handle on the essence of the art. You still need to practice, find your own combat rhythm and link it together with your personal talents, but you seem to be on a path headed in the right direction."

"Thanks." she finally heaved the response, catching her breath enough to speak. "I'll keep practicing."
