It was calling to her. Emerald had been ignoring it ever since she had gotten back to the school, allowing herself to get swept up into her reunions and moments with her friends. But in the back of her mind, that familiar darkness had been lurking; waiting for all the hype of the new semester to die down before it made its move. Revenge. Revenge for the fallen. “But I don’t know...” Emerald whispered, violet eyes turning their gaze directly to the ceiling in the dark night. Moonlight cascaded through her window and onto her form as she stayed completely still in her bed, trying to sleep so desperately. She tried wrapping herself in blanket and sheets to keep herself still and calm, the summer heat drove her crazy underneath the pressure. At one point she had frozen herself down, strapped over under the covers by ice on her wrists and ankles, but it melted onto the blankets and made them redundant, especially when sleeping in sleeveless slip cut above the knee. Anything to combat the heat. She closed her eyes, but the threat of indulgent dreams was on her doorstep. Indulging in the feeling of blood, of take a life in her hands and fiddling with it at her leisure. Oh, the feeling. The way the iced blades could slice through skin with such ease. Oh, the feeling. Her eyes shut harshly, twisting sharply in her bed. “So perfect.” She whispered, falling. Falling for the feeling. Like coating on her heart and soul it would devour her. Her sanity slipping, she forced herself up. She reached for the Aeon but her fingers could not bend to her whim long enough to trace a phone call. She could almost feel the sensation in her skin, feeling it crawl beneath her form to take hold of her limbs like an external pressure. She walked so calmly to the door, her eyes dull and glossed. Its fingers to her spine as she moves in the motions as it requires. Revenge. For the fallen. Anyone will do. But it must happen. “I can’t.” She said aloud, a hand to her head as she gripped onto her hair, pulling on it slightly. Anything to try and draw her mind’s attention away from the concept and onto something new. Strands would fall; nothing significant but there they were as she let go. Emerald opened the door, wide eyed as she started to run. But instead of heading directly out, she went upwards. Her Aeon sat timely on her bed and her door left wide open. But she needed more than anything not to be alone. Her fingers clicked together as she ran, stumbling into the wall on the second floor and dragging along it harshly before hitting the carpet hard. She pulled herself up slowly, leaving the half formed weapon on the floor in her motion. Up the stairs, and she clicked her fingers again, this time actually managing to form a small jagged blade in her hand. As her hand flung out to knock on her friend’s door; the third on the third, she had to maintain focus to another point somehow. The weapon plunged into her thigh weakly and she bared her teeth. “Gyaah-” She stifled the scream as best she could by holding her mouth as shut as possible. Her eyes pulled shut as she winced, and rather than being able to knock properly, she managed a few heavy hits on the door before her whole body was thrown against it. Hand shaking but still on the blade. Blood on her form. As the door would open, Emerald’s unnaturally dull eyes would peer up at her friend, staring through her hair in desperation. She would plead; her eyes and her voice in tandem. She’s rather die than give in. “S-Stop me.” |

The friend that would be needed in a moment's time was awake, not all an unusual circumstance for the girl with wings. Since her own abberation in her psyche, she had been watching her own darkness. It still lurked in her, though lulled into silence by a particular force that it had not been prepared for. Clad in a long black sleepshirt with a pink skull, she had tried to sleep really, but it slipped through her fingers. Instead, the winged girl kept aware and awake, stitching a dress that had a tear and cleaned of blood by moonlight and a low-lighting lamp. But in the air, a spark of something intangible. She couldn't say what exactly, her eyes would be drawn from her work to stare up to nothing in particular then over to her pendulum on the desk. A glow, soft and gradually less steady. A frowm and an idle tug at her pink-black striped socks to keep over her knee. Silence. Then a heavy hit. Not one but a few then a heavier thud. The blonde snaps her head to her open bedroom door, leading right out. She jumps off her bed and walks over - why at this hour? If it was a prankster knocking on the doors, she had a good mind to form an orb to throw at the person, property damage be damned. But opening the door, she would instead see her friend in a state of pitying desperation. Was she bleeding? Her eyes...that similar darkness that stirred in her flickered in her friend, but Emerald was fighting it back with all of her might. “S-Stop me.” The winged girl made a worried wince, not over the idea of doing Emerald asked but for the overall well being of her friend, knowing full well how deep the darkness could be and the ease it can overtake. She would drape Emerald's arm over her shoulders to help lift her inside and to set her on one of the chairs in the living room space, neverminding the bleeding at all. There was a cleaning squad on campus that could do wonders for that. Once Emerald was seated, she would dash over to her door and lock it. Stop her. Don't let her fall too. A bite of her lip, what to do...Amber returned to her side and her hand touched the face of her friend, trying to seek how far that darkness had clawed into her through her eyes. "Emmy...can you still hear me? I'm right here, I won't let you fall into that place." |

Emerald blinked heavily a few times, trying to dissipate the texture her orbs her forming. Her hand allowed the jagged weapon to drop at her doorstep as her arm was taken hold of, thrown over Amber's shoulder and taken into the room. The blood would not be so bad; she had been far too weak to do anything worthwhile with the imperfect weaponry she ended up creating. She had been set down in a chair, feeling her form threaten to slump over the side and back onto the floor. The ground. The end. She felt the cool hand of her comforting friend against her face lightly. But at the threat of her inward glance, Emerald shut her eyes tight, her face twitching with the force. There was nothing but an impending shift of shame falling over her form; that she could not let anyone see when it was this bad. Normally they would both venture out together and find some nameless individual to satisfy all urges. That was no longer an option with the way life had presented itself. Neither wanted to, so the fight started here. "Emmy...can you still hear me? I'm right here, I won't let you fall into that place." A hand flew out, gripping onto the shoulder closest to her tightly. Not out of threat, but out of a desperate need for the support. This was not something she had ever had to experience before. She tried pulling Amber; inward to bring another form near enough so that she might be left alone. The strength in her nails would threaten to tear the material away. She could feel gentle whispers into her skin on every inch of her form by now. She found herself shaking; had she always been shaking? "I can't stay here." She said quietly after a time; suddenly there was this impending threat level being slowly painted on the girl before her. What was it she had been told? Anyone will do. Emerald shook her head sharply, feeling her free hand land on the chair she found herself fallen into as she pushed herself off it once more. "I have to go; this was a mistake." Her eyes flew open, dimming with each passing moment as the violet hues that used to circle within her orbs slowly would cease to be. To her side, she would cast her gaze to her hand, watching it stretch each finger and flex in a slow motion, her wrist turning in slow circles. Her thumb pressed to her index and middle finger. But the normal snap would not ring out like it normally would; her hand had ceased in motion. The last thing she needed was the ability to make more weapons, and a part of her sound mind knew this. |

Emerald would not let her see, but Amber had a sense it had clawed deeply. Such focus there was on her friend that the grip of her shoulder was not a factor, a register of any possible pain. She was in need, she could feel Emerald shaking. How hard was she fighting that darkness? Amber did not withdraw her hand from Emerald's face, hoping that knowing she was physically present would ground her somehow. But... "I can't stay here." "You will." Pout. "You have to." "I have to go; this was a mistake." Emerald was already rising from the chair to try and leave, the familiar hues Amber knew fading from sight. Stop her, that was the order from a friend in need the the winged girl would be damned to back away. It would be Amber's turn to grab Emerald's shoulders, dark eyes staring up at her. "You can't." Spoken with an insistance, something the soft spoken nephlet usually lacked. "I won't let you. Emmy, come back. You and I have to try harder now to not drown - the world is changing. We have more than just us now to think about." Amber knew it firsthand in New York, that something was lingering on the horizon that she or anyone could see yet. She would try, try with all her might even as her friend's eyes became more listless as moments went on, the familiar gestures she had seen on occasions. The darkness fills every pore, becomes the blood, taints the soul... "Come on Emmy, stay here with me." |

"You can't." Her eyes went wide at the notion. Can't? They narrowed heavily at the concept. Strong hands had gripped her shoulders with force, keeping her grounded for the moment. "I won't let you. Emmy, come back. You and I have to try harder now to not drown - the world is changing. We have more than just us now to think about." Emerald allowed a hand to press on the wound of her thigh. Not enough blood! But at least she could get a little on her hand, causing her to sigh heavily as though physical weight had been lifted from her shoulders. The feel of it on her skin, taking back all it could offer her. At least it was something. But with all that made this place spin, she felt the idea of it all changing so drastically to be something she could not handle. For a moment, her hands flew out to take hold of her friend by the waist. Some stability. She wanted to embrace her. "Come on Emmy, stay here with me." "I was born to do this!" She shouted back suddenly, practically seething through her teeth at every notion she raised. "I was raised for this! The world cannot cease to be this way!" For if it did, where would she belong in its impending exhale. She had to look to her hands again, bringing them into plain view. After short deliberation, shook her head again. Was that colour back in her eyes? It would fall apart in the moment if they weren't careful. Would the universe pull her to pieces with its change? The change that Amber spoke so sternly of. "This is all I know! It's all I am!" She extended those hands to her friend as best she could under her grasp. "Break them." Break her hands. She would be nothing with out them; the main source of her strongest ability. |

For a moment, Amber hoped she broke through to Emerald somehow. A flicker to how she aggravagted her wound, aware of the sheen of fresh blood. It ached, made the darkness in her cry out for the same. Amber shut her eyes quick to extinguish the thought, opening them to see the slight of her friend's movements. If she wanted a hug, she would have gladly conceded to giving her one if it only helped. "I was born to do this!" The shout from normally calm Emmy made the winged girl flinch. "I was raised for this! The world cannot cease to be this way!" The dark eyes would watch her, let her release the steam from the stinging words. Changing, the world for them was changing in a grand scale and it was difficult. Amber knew it better than most, that is why Emerald's words hurt just as much - a reflection of similarity. "This is all I know! It's all I am!" "I know." Somberly spoken, because Amber knew the path they shared. Emerald's hand extended to her in her distress - break them? The winged girl's gaze would look to her hands before reached out to clasp. Could she even bring herself to do it? Would she? Amber closed her eyes and shook her head. "I'm not going to do that." A look back into Emerald's eyes. "Think about it...Think of Darrien. He would be sad to see you in such a state, wouldn't he? And I certainly don't want to hurt you like that either, Emmy." A soft sigh. "You know that I know. That is what we are, what we were made for...but it's not impossible Emmy. You changed in small ways already, I've seen it. This isn't impossible in the least for us...it's just going to be harder on us now." |

"I'm not going to do that." She would not comply with the Nightstar girl's commands. There was a moment before she could actually accept it; it had never been alright to deny someone of what they felt they needed. Just break them. The pain of it would surely be enough to stop this. Emerald had never thought so far that had it happened, it would have sent her into some kind of fury. Her friend had the sound mind here. "Think about it...Think of Darrien. He would be sad to see you in such a state, wouldn't he? And I certainly don't want to hurt you like that either, Emmy." But she didn't want to have to thing about him; not there. Not in the midst of everything that was happening. He was the one person in this changing world that she could never hope to have understand her. And he knew it; perhaps that was one of the things that drove this to happen so soon. By now her hands are tightly wound with Amber's, staining her skin. The very thought of him finding out that there was something so deeply rooted to her core was enough to send her to try and fight free; of Amber, not the real threat. "You know that I know. That is what we are, what we were made for...but it's not impossible Emmy. You changed in small ways already, I've seen it. This isn't impossible in the least for us...it's just going to be harder on us now." What had she been saying this whole time? Emerald felt the colour flash back into her eyes long enough for her to ask the question. But the pain of it all, and the internal anguish was enough to send anyone over the edge. Having a force telling her to go; shouting at her to get out and go do what needed to be done. Having another force willing her to stay and fight within the mess she had caused. That gnawing feeling that if she persisted, she might turn in a moment and wield it all against her. If nothing else, she willed the last not to happen. But it was more difficult than words could express. "I don't want to think about someone who will not accept me." She said finally, daunting over an earlier point that pushed her further. "I just want to think about you." A face of reason; of acceptance in honesty. Who else would front her in a state like this? Her words seemed to defy an earlier darkness, with movements less staggered. Had something been able to force it away? And how long might it last; had she been asked, Emerald might say it was like a burning sensation in the back of her throat, threatening in all its might to push past and take control of her whole form. But for the moment, she could breathe. Her grip loosened, allowing her hands to gently fall from her hold before them. They were quick to close the distance, looping tightly around Amber's neck to pull her against the winged girl tightly. No fury, and no hard pressed thoughts. Her face lowered away as if to hide her eyes in a midst her own fears. Had she breathed on her own this whole time? A sharp exhale finally would fall from her into the nook of her friend's neck. Relief. |

The winged girl was not going to back away, for once the girl assumed a steady, unbreaking force. She was not going to break her hands, she wasn't going to let her go into the darkness alone. If need be, she'd reach in the darkness tiself to make sure she could reach in to pull Emerald out, no matter if she becomes stained in the process. It was the path they walked. "I don't want to think about someone who will not accept me." A small squeeze for Emerald's hands. That's not true, she wanted to say, to assure her. What was it then? "I just want to think about you." A soft blink at those words, the weight sinking in. It was honest, the Emerald she knew was there, still fighting it back just to say what she had to. There was a visceral moment of pure worry when her friend's hands fell from hers, a briesfest worry that without physically holding her, Emerald would fall into the darkness. She felt this before...down in the caves once, red dust that screamed words of death in all tongues, that dire feeling of loss. Again when Emerald had to leave, no word if she would return. The worry didn't linger, Emerald drew the winged one in an embrace and the worries melted. She was here, still here with her, alive and warm. Relief. Amber closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around her friend. A huggle, that's what it always felt like when she allowed herself to indulge in physical affection. It was a lot fluffier, kinder, maybe as testament to what a part of her was: Angeli, the beings that produced good vibrations in many, figures of warmth and swift justice. "What happened Emmy...?" She asked gently, a waver in her voice. Was the nephlet on the verge of crying? The blonde hid her face too, the want to remain steady, rooted for Emerald's sake. Still, she was shaking too, trying to keep herself together. "Those feelings...they come up when you think of something that bothers you, that won't let you sleep at night." Let me hear you. God may turn a deaf ear, but I can hear. "Did I worry you? I'm sorry if I did. If I had." |

It was something that would ground her; keep her a little stable as Emerald had not been sure what kind of place she would come back to. Was that all? Emerald had always thought it would be so much more difficult to force the impending darkness away. No. Don't say that. It mightn't be over yet; in the pit of her stomach she could feel something keeping at bay. Maybe when she left she would lose herself. It had taken so much out of her to just get to this area in the first place. "What happened Emmy...?" Was the quality of her voice faltering? Emerald fought the initial urge to pull away just an inch so she would be able to check, but she felt her shuffle slightly to bury her head away. She wouldn't deny her the desire to disappear; she felt much the same way. Her eyes pulled shut tightly, her mind wishing that nothing was going to steal the colour of her orbs again. "Those feelings...they come up when you think of something that bothers you, that won't let you sleep at night." An nonjudgmental eye to her flaws, a gentle ear to listen. "Did I worry you? I'm sorry if I did. If I had." She felt her face move, her features bend into a frown. Worry her. Emerald had been content not to say whether she had or not. It had been simple for her to leave it be. She thought of her conversation with Stella. "I can't help it." Was all she would initially say. Her muscles would tighten, squeezing around Amber's form just to check she was still there. She hadn't been for some time before this. "I cannot risk losing the only family I have left here," The only thing that bound her to this grounding, "Not you. And not again." She had said, and the unrelenting urge to pull away a touch flared up within her again, so she obeyed. Being able to look back at the winged girl; show her the colour in her eyes and see the life in hers. Her hands freed up some space, one moving to rest on her shoulder while the other could not help but reach up to touch her cheek lightly. Still warmth. "I'm sorry I left that day. When I turned away I-" She paused, words catching in her throat as the threat of tears started to pick up in her eyes. She shook her head lightly; no need to mention how much she may have cried at her own departure. "I might have been able to help. Do something. I shouldn't have gone away in such a rush. All I did was drive myself into the ground to no avail. Some good could have happened if I'd stayed with you." Emerald admitted. You mightn't have died if I could have saved you. The thought crossed her mind, but she ignored it. "I lost you." She felt her form rise slightly, doing her best to front her normally stoic demeanor. |

"I can't help it." The girl would feel the same squeeze she had given to Emerald's hands a few minutes ago. Still here, the winged girl was not a figment in the least. Neither girl had dissipated into the shadows, keeping their heads above the murky water. "I cannot risk losing the only family I have left here. Not you. And not again." Those words resonated strongly in Amber, it nearly stopped her heart. Only family she had left? Emerald had talked of her family before, however little bits that they were. So...what did...? The girl felt her breath momentarily caught in her throat, looking up at Emerald, nuzzling her cheek against her hand. Still there. The warmth was proof of that. "I'm sorry I left that day. When I turned away I-" The pause nearly smashed Amber to bits. Did they really need to say how much they cried when no one looked? "I might have been able to help. Do something. I shouldn't have gone away in such a rush. All I did was drive myself into the ground to no avail. Some good could have happened if I'd stayed with you." Amber shook her head, just slight but stops. No, it wouldn't...it wouldn't have been good at all, it would have been the same, except they both may have died in that dome. No, it would have been even more painful because... "I lost you." The winged girl crumpled from the weight of those words, clinging on to Emerald's waist. "You left and then Mazo left, I got really worried for you both." The girl wailed. "That's why I messaged you guys so much, just to be sure you were both okay even thought you were so far away. But then I so stupidly...I was tricked. By the man who calls himself my uncle. He skewered me with glass spires, I never even saw them form. " A sniffle in pause. "I was really scared Emmy, I saw myself bleeding to death and I was unable to do anything to save myself! All I could do is wish, so I wished with all my soul to be alive, so I can come back here! I wished that you and Mazo and everyone would be here too! That's all I wanted! I was so happy when I saw you both there in Stein's lab because that meant someone heard my wish! I thought no one would ever hear me..." Amber broke down into tears again, her words incomprehensible for the moment. She hugged onto Emerald with all her might, holding onto the wish that had been granted. |

Emerald felt her friend crumple at her own words, feeling the need to hold on further to risk losing her all together. She would not let her fall through her grasp; slip through her fingers like last time. The more she spoke about the incident in Italy, which she had still received so little information on, the more she felt her fall apart. But Emerald would try her best to pick up the pieces, placing Amber back together bit by bit just in holding onto her. She had never seen her cry; neither had, really. The sheer sound of the break down caused Emerald's to fall freely in a matter of seconds. It was all she could do to keep her own strength in the situation, trying to keep her stoic performance as best she could in the moment. But it was not meant to be, her back fell from its straightened position and hunched over, and she allowed her arms to circle those that held her. Emerald would lift her up if she started to physically crumble. She could not let her falter. Keep her up for as long as she would need it. She would stand there for hours if it came to that. Though Emerald would move slightly, she shifted her head to the side to press her lips lightly to the cheek of her friend, feeling tears streaming so freely now. She would do it a second time, this time with a little more force. Anything to let her know that she was there and wasn't going anywhere. A third time, and she would keep her face close enough to feel the intensity of the other body breathing with her. There was nothing else. Because at this point, there were no words. |
