Mitsuko opened the doors to the expansive roof, taking in the spectacular view of the grounds. Trees, fields and a few spots of blue peeking out from behind the green canvas. She walked slowly to the edge and looked down at the students she would be sharing the next foreseeable future with. The uniforms really did their job making everything appear monotone. Like grey ghosts walking among the bright colours of the grounds. She mused lightly on what this place would look like if everyone had been allowed to wear normal clothing. She laughed it off after a few minutes deciding that it was probably better that they didn't. Too many colours would spoil the simple beauty found here.

The sun was still warm being this late in the afternoon. She continued to watch the ever growing number of people running around beneath her. Making up stories for individuals or the occasional couple she saw. She imagined them running off together despite family connections or the lack of wealth.... 'Nah, too Romeo...' Or pictured some having just come back from a fight with a giant dinosaur in some part of the forest. A light giggle escaped her lips. She soon saw a couple kissing very passionately under a tree

"Fuck relationships... Someone always walks away with all the trust" she said to the wind. Lightly hoping no-one would hear. She wasn't pretending to be anyone today. She was just herself. The broken doll.

Mitsuko started to hum lightly a tune that had been stuck in her head recently. and continued to watch the crowds below.

"Fuck relationships... Someone always walks away with all the trust"

Artie's ears perked up at the unfamiliar voice. Someone had left the door to Darrien's room open again, and Artie decided that that must be the universe's way of telling hi, it was time for an adventure. He trotted down the hallway of floor three, passing a few familiar doors. Being one of just a few pets here on campus, Artie was something of a superstar on campus. He knew which doors would open for him, who'd rub his belly if he just walked in, and who had treats set aside for him.

After traversing the third floor, he made his way into the stairwell (seriously, doesn't anyone close a door anymore?). Climbing wasn't the easiest thing in his world, his long body and short legs often tripping up if he tried to move too fast, but he'd grown almost used to it. At least he didn't hit his head any more, and that was a win. And wins are important, especially when you're teeny.

Ascension complete, he found the door onto the roof itself to be open as well. (Really? It's not like it's that hard to close a damn door!) His patter on the rooftop was muffled, no audible click from his claws. He found the origin of the unfamiliar voice gazing over the edge at the crowds below. It wasn't until he made it to the edge that he realized how high up he was. So low to the ground, you'd think he'd be eager to see things from up high, but no, not on your life. Maybe if someone were holding him, but not with only his four short legs keeping him upright.

"Ar-ar-uhf!" he barked as he scampered back, eager for purchase on solid ground.

Mitsuko was started by the sudden bark of a dog, she made a very small gasping noise and looked around very quickly for the source. Upon finding it. Her mind went blank.

"PUUUPPPPYYY!!!" Mitsuko instantly scooped him up in her arms cradling it like a baby. "Hey little guy, what're you doing here.... Did your owner leave your cuteness alone somewhere boring? ... I bet he did~~ "

Mitsuko cuddled the puppy a while longer before looking around to see if anyone was searching for him, keeping him pressed firmly against her breasts she figured she could probably find where his owner was a little faster than just letting him lead. About to start running she stopped and decided against it. Running at nearly full speed could result in someone's injury.

"If you could just talk, this would be so much easier.... Then I could find where your owner is... or at least where you live... But in the mean time" Mitsuko rubbed her captive's tummy and kissed near his ears. "You are so adorable... I might just have to keep you"

The thing that goes bump in the night
In a flash, Artie's eyes began to swirl, pupils blotted out entirely by the milky colored irises. No matter how often this happened, it never stopped feeling like he'd just spun around in a blender for a minute. His body goes stiff, tail pointed taught, legs rigid and fully extended. To the casual observer, it would appear as though he were having a seizure, but in reality it was much more difficult to explain.

Images flashed incoherently, in no real order, and concerning humans he'd never met, never even seen before.

A crowd of gawkers

A bit of fabric, dangling from a nail

A purple Mohawk

A tire spraying water from a puddle

A pool of blood

Meanwhile, on the roof:

"Try and hold still." the voice rang through the silence, words without origin. Artie soon went limp in the girl's arms, head hanging weakly to one side, breathing slowed, tail firmly between the legs. Appearing from a shadowed corner, first a pair of well polished shoes, then legs covered in snow white trousers hung to bare ankles, a torso clad in a pale lavender shirt and white jacket (pink polka dotted bow tie, for effect), and, finally, a sprawling array of rainbow colored hair.

Darrien stood a few steps away from his dog and his new friend. Careful not to surprise the pooch, or the girl for that matter, he approached slowly.

Artie, without warning, heed, or care for himself sprang up from the girl's lap and darted to the roof's ledge. Staring intently into the crowd, his eyes darted back and forth, looking, hoping to find something to tie the images together. There! The big purple hair! A boy was playing on a skateboard, circling a pack of freshman girls who didn't seem to be enjoying the show. Focusing, looking harder, for anything at all that can make the images he saw in his head. There!

"ARRR! ARUH ARH ARUHF!"

Artie's bark wasn't loud enough to carry off the roof, no one could hear the commotion the dog was raising except the pair on the roof. Darrien, having seen Artie act this way before, watched the pup intently. Peering off the roof, he did his best to see what Artie saw. Several groups milled around the area, the last vestiges of the evening's activities. "Can't you at least try to talk?" the boy spoke to his dog in a chiding, yet loving tone. Then he saw it too, a car speeding along the entrance road, swerving wildly. Seizing a rock, Darrien took a split second to pick his target, then he loosed his projectile.

GONG!!

In the blink of an eye everything went from stoic and calm to mass hysteria. When the sound of the rock striking the sign rang out, several groups scattered. The freshman girls barreled into the kid on the skateboard, knocking him off his feet. The board rolled the opposite way, the way the boy had pointed it to continue his torment, and was reduced to splinters when the car ran aground on the lawn.

CRASH

The car plowed into a large trunked tree, the driver showered in powdered windshield glass. Slumped out of the open door, his body bloodied and clothes in tatters, but lungs breathing air, heart beating, alive.

Back on the roof

"Ar-uhf!" Artie glided around the roof, nuzzling his nose into Darrien's palm, then returning to Mitsuko, safely from the ledge he'd braved moments before.

"Apologies love" Darrien spoke evenly, as though nothing happened, simple as the sunset. "Artie, the least you could do is leave a not next time you run off like that." he said absently, flipping a bacon treat to his dog. "I'm Darrien, by the way. You've already met Sir Artemis there, and you might be?"

Mitsuko watched as the macabre scene unfolded, her smile continued to grow. When everything finally started to settle, she was vaguely aware that someone else had joined her, apparently the dogs owner. She turned to look at him, drinking in his appearance. 'Oh my. This one sure is original... Crap, what did he say his name was... Started with a D...'

"Well Sugar, you sure do know how to make an entrance. My name is Mitsuko. How'd you pull that trick just then. I don't think rocks can do that?" She asked almost as if she already knew the answer. Her eyes half lidded, she walked a little closer, crouching down and petting Artimus. "You know, I was considering stealing him away." her half joking tone ringing out.

"My full name is Mitsuko Souma." Standing up and giving a slight curtsy. Mitsuko's mind was racing with thoughts about her new guest. Was he able to move the rock with sheer strength or was it something else. Ooh, what would it be like to spar? Would he accept.... Most men were intimidated by her already, especially when she was asking for a fight. 'Oh Mits, don't go getting yourself into trouble. The last thing you need right now is to break someones skull in by accident like you did last time'. She once took a bet that a man twice her size could beat her. One punch to the temple said otherwise. She made a tidy profit that day. She smiled in earnest at the memory. Remembering the very cute shoes she bought... all 10 of them.

Mitsuko flicked some of her hair over her shoulder and continued to size up ... ' What was his name? Play it off... keep cool '

"Well Sugar, you sure do know how to make an entrance. My name is Mitsuko. How'd you pull that trick just then. I don't think rocks can do that?"

"You know, I was considering stealing him away."

Darrien smirked at the girl, taking in her appearance for the first time. "If you liked my entrance, wait until you see me exit. I'm told I put on a bit of a show." slight wiggle to his hips "No trick, everything has a point where, if struck right, it maximizes the sound output. I just have a gift about spotting that point fairly quickly." he spoke of his telescopic vision as though it were something Santa dropped off one magical Christmas eve.

"As for stealing little Artie, I'm sure if you asked him nicely he'd go willingly." A smile, a wink, and playful glance to the pooch. "He's more flippant than the cast of Sweet Valley High, if you have the right treats."

To the word, his word, his favoritest word of words, Artie's ears perked up. What dog didn't like treats? Artie preferred the bacon kind, but would accept anything with peanut butter, bananas, apples, duck, turkey, chicken, really anything except store bought kibble. That was for normal dogs, this one had a palette akin to most French chefs.

"My full name is Mitsuko Souma."

"Lovely making your acquaintance, Mitsuko Souma. Souma, like the family in Fruits Basket? If I hug you will you turn into an Ox and chase poor Artie?" or was that Sohma? Poe-tay-toe, or Pah-tah-toe? Was there much of a difference, anyway? "What brings you up here miss may or may not turn into an Ox?"

Mitusko grinned. Was he flirting with her? Or was this just being curious. She casually approached him and opened her arms up slightly. She looked over at the now clearing chaos and at the sunset. She took a deep breath. "Well, " Opening her arms up "You can try, but I can't guarantee your safety... After all I may just charge after you instead"

Mitsuko stared straight into the boys eyes, gauging his reaction to her words. Of course she had no real intention to let him touch her just yet. Her plan was to get him close enough to maybe land a punch. He looked strong enough to hold his own and she'd been craving a fight. Probably had something to do with being actually tied down to a single location. But there was nothing more satisfying than simply fighting for no reason other than testing your strength. That was strictly the boxer in her.

She flexed the muscles in her arms and legs as a reflex. ... on second thought, its still a bit to early to fight someone... especially with someone who can punch with sound... or whatever he said

"A tempting offer love, but one I should decline." the rainbow haired wonder spoke evenly, without longing or regret. This had proven to be a fairly eventful first week back, and the karmic gods were certainly playing their games this night. "For the moment, at least." There it was, the grin that melted glaciers, the wink that stopped time.

He took a moment to straighten his bow tie, casting a look about the ground around them. "The roof always offers such a peaceful respite, there's just something so ethereal about towering above everyone." Darrien's words flowed through the night air as though spun from a silver harp, his voice musical and hypnotic in its cadence.

"Tell me, what' has brought you to our land of misfit toys?" he asked leaving the 'I'll show you mine if you show me yours' tone floating in the air.

Mitsuko was nearly stunned when this boy sort-of rejected her. It has been a really long time since anyone has actually had declined an offer to at least attempt to cop a feel. This mainly intrigued her. She wrapped her arms around her chest as if cold. He must have thought he was so charming.... Okay ... His wink was pretty cute. But that was all.

"Tell me, what' has brought you to our land of misfit toys?" She walked towards the guard rail, leaning back on it and turning her eyes towards heaven. Her eyes glazed over for a second or two trying to actually think of the reason she was here.

"I'm just looking for something. Problem is, I'm not entirely sure what that thing is yet...." She paused and looked over at him " .... When I think I find it, everything seems to remind me that, no, I haven't."

It only now occurred to her that she was actually answering this way with no intentions. She was simply speaking. Normally she had a plan to get something she wanted out of everyone. Hm. This boy seemed to have nothing she really wanted yet. Aside from the interesting ability. His tone suggested that he was curious about her, she liked that.

"I'm really strong, and really fast" She stated simply. That wasn't exactly what it was, but Mitsuko figured it was the easiest way of saying it without going into her past. "I'd need a punching bag, or a volunteer... Or someone who can be Voluntold" She grinned at the last word eyeing him. He looked fit enough to take at least one punch to the gut.... Welll... It would look like one punch. Mitsuko's smirk grew wider.

Your daily dose of beautiful
The cowboy had been coming up to practice his guitar, his parents had bought him a beautiful steel one for his birthday and he was sorely out of practice. Dusty, faded blue jeans and a plain white tee adorned his tall, lanky frame. The black cowboy hat pulled down over his moss colored eyes idly. He rarely found anyone up here so it was worth the walk up the stairs as far as he was concerned.

However that would not be the case today. As he opened the door to the roof a lovely, female voice would drift across his ears and cause him to look up slightly. His rust colored hair brushing over his darkly tanned skin.

"I'd need a punching bag, or a volunteer... Or someone who can be Voluntold"

"T'would be a shame fer 'y ta need to resort ta hittin, ma'am. Lovely ladies such as yerself 'sh have a strong man ta protect ya." His drawl was slow, and easy on the ears. The cowboy appeared as he spoke, tipping his hat to the lady before nodding to Darrien. Did he know the other boy? No. But polite is as polite does. "N' why would a beautiful lady such as yerself need ever raise her fist?" He finished and paused a few feet from them. "P'don my intrusion. Ah didn't think anyone wou' be up here. Ah'm Aiden. A pleasure, Ma'am." He flashed her a charming, southern boy smile and let his guitar hang from it's strap against his back.

"I'm just looking for something. Problem is, I'm not entirely sure what that thing is yet...."

" .... When I think I find it, everything seems to remind me that, no, I haven't."

Darrien's grin grew at her vulnerable moment. He leaned against the wall, watching the girl closely. Artie pattered around his feet, kicking little bits of gravel aside idly.

"I'm really strong, and really fast"

"I'd need a punching bag, or a volunteer... Or someone who can be Voluntold"

Through his grin, Darrien sighed perceptibly. He wasn't much for sparring, but he wouldn't hold back if he were pushed. Unflappable as ever, he barely flinched at the girl's posturing. "Well then, sounds as though I'd be in my wrong mind to cross you." He slid a hand through his hair, allowing the silky smooth locks to run through his fingers.

"T'would be a shame fer 'y ta need to resort ta hittin, ma'am. Lovely ladies such as yerself 'sh have a strong man ta protect ya."

And like that, they were no longer alone. The roof was a popular destination for those seeking respite from the horrors the school could bring, or a palace of solitude for those struggling to deal with the torments of being a teenager. The cowboy, Darrien imagined, swung toward the latter. He returned the cowboy's polite nod, still smirking like the only guy that got the joke.

"N' why would a beautiful lady such as yerself need ever raise her fist?"

"P'don my intrusion. Ah didn't think anyone wou' be up here. Ah'm Aiden. A pleasure, Ma'am."

"Ar-aruhf-ruf!" Artie shouted from between Darrien's feet. His active tail had fallen to a stoic rhythm, no longer flailing wildly in the evening breeze.

Darrien's grin became a grimace, but only for the briefest of instants, before playing across his lips once more. "Tex, Lovely, we find ourselves at a bit of a crossroads. Are we to be treated to a little honky tonk this evening?"

Mitsuko's eyes lit up as the new arrival spoke. Living in Japan most her life she never actually heard someone with that southern accent. She did very little to hide her excitement. She watched the way the new boys mouth moved with each word. This is how she learned to speak English with little to no accent, only getting caught on a few words.

'How does he even know where to stress the right word!? Its like a whole new language! I gotta learn to fake that accent! I bet boys would be interested'

She continued to watch Aiden as Darrien answered. "Tex, Lovely, we find ourselves at a bit of a crossroads. Are we to be treated to a little honky tonk this evening?" She paused at the fact she didn't know what Honky Tonk meant. 'Relax, not like its a popquiz... just play it off' she reminded herself.

"Well Cutie, I sometimes need to take care of myself. Men aren't always there for the right reasons." The words left her mouth sour. This was not a conversation she wanted to be having. Her expression shifted slightly. "Nothing wrong with a little sport. I'm sure you boys can handle a few scrapes. I happened to enjoy sparing as well." She firmly placed her hands on her hips trying to sound serious. But with her current tone of voice it looked more like she was pouting.

She only then noticed the guitar strap. 'This school has too much eye-candy. If only they had the wallet to back it up' She giggled slightly "So what did you plan on practising up here? Mitsuko eye'd Darrien to see his response, it seemed as if these two had something against each other

Aiden was quite happy to share the space with the both of them, he had no fight with either. Well. He never really had much of a fight with anyone, too much of a bother.

"Tex, Lovely, we find ourselves at a bit of a crossroads. Are we to be treated to a little honky tonk this evening?"

His eyes swiveled to the rainbow haired boy and he flicked his hand dismissively, his hat flipping back to hang against his shoulder blades by the winds he created. He had no fight with this boy, why would the other bother trying to get a rile out of him. Instead of rising to the bait he just smiled politely.

"Naw, Ah won' bother ya'll with tha'. 's clear yer not the type. S'too bad, 't can be a damn good time." he chuckled softly and brushed his rusty hair from his eyes.

"Well Cutie, I sometimes need to take care of myself. Men aren't always there for the right reasons. Nothing wrong with a little sport. I'm sure you boys can handle a few scrapes. I happened to enjoy sparing as well."[/i]

She was fiesty, it was interesting to the cowboy and he just chuckled. She was very different from the girls he was used to back home. They were all more then willing to let the man do the fighting and just worry about bein pretty. Still. To strike a woman? He didn't have it in him.

"So what did you plan on practising up here?"

He tapped the side of the steel guitar, a crooked smile on his lips. He had honestly almost forgotten about the instrument. Leave it to a lady to notice something like that.

"Ah was jus' 'bout to get to know mah new gu'tar. Steel is a might bit diff'rnt then an acoustic. B' Ah dun want to impose and be rude. Ya'll were havin a conversation."

"Naw, Ah won' bother ya'll with tha'. 's clear yer not the type. S'too bad, 't can be a damn good time."

"I'll take your word for it hombre, besides, the acoustics up here are something awful."

He played with a lock of hair, spinning it around his finger, gazing into the night blankly. His expression remained impassive, betraying nothing of the thought stream flying through his head. Icy blue eyes found his Artie, pattering in tight circles at his feet, still reeling from his episode only moments ago.

The dog's ears hung lazily, his tail had fallen to hold limp behind him. Too tired to be excited, too distracted to be content, the life of a clairvoyant dog had to be all kinds of rough. Knowing the future, well, bits of a potential future, and lacking an effective cross species communication mechanism was frustrating. Thus far, he'd been lucky enough to have Darrien nearby whenever he had a vision, but what would happen if he wasn't there? What would happen if the dog found himself alone, walking along the path in the quad, and he began seeing things?

Meanwhile, the dervish stood silent, taking in the others' exchange with a casual, almost academic curiosity. He slid his Aeon from his jacket pocket, idly noting bits and observations, whims and thoughts. Snapping off a few quick text messages. He had things to do, and his moment's reprieve was as good a time as any.

"No worries lovely, you'll have plenty of time to show off what you can do once Combat class starts." he offered idly, careful to keep the current conversation directed and flowing.

"No worries lovely, you'll have plenty of time to show off what you can do once Combat class starts."

Mitsuko's eyes lit up instantly on hearing about Combat class. It had been ages since she'd had a half decent spar. But having extra 'talents' really did change the outcome of most fights in her favour, not that she was actually complaining about that. But still, a challenge would be fun.

"Fantastic, I'm going to love that class~ " She paused and looked at Aiden "I wouldn't mind listening to a song, and conversations are always better with more people. Different views. I get this feeling that we have a pretty broad spectrum as is"

She pulled out a hairtie from her back pocket and tied her hair up in a lose ponytail and sat down. Looking as eager as if a band was about to start playing. This was something she'd always liked. Music. Mitsuko could read music, understand the theory of music but couldn't for the life of her play an instrument. Any time she tried to learn she'd get frustrated and end up breaking the item. After a while she just stopped trying and just liked to listen. It was good enough for now. She also dated a world renowned pianist for a while so that sort of helped. 'How many dressed did I get from him again.... 10? No... wait yeah 10 .. Pfft sucker...' she smiled at her own train of thought.

"Ah'm 'fraid Ah'm n' much of a singer. Ah just strum a bit, Ah leave the singin to bigger and better voices. D'you sing ma'am?" He said with a smile and then looked to Darrien. "Tha' is o' of the good things about country, it sounds better out in th' wide, open spaces." His eyes went to the dog by Darrien's feet and his expression grew concerned, he'd grown up on a farm. As such he'd had herding dogs around all the time. "Yer dog looks a m'ght bit tired. Is he 'ight?" He questioned, not accusing him of mistreating the animal, more he was concerned that it might be dehydrated. The boy pulled a bottle of water out of his back pocket, he usually carried a bottle with him and looked around for some way to pour some out for the dog.

Seems like her desire for a spar had been belayed for the moment, allowing Darrien to let his mind wander back a daze. He scratched Artie behind the ears, lulling his dog into a resting state. It always took so much out of him, seeing the things he saw.

The dog lolled around a bit, struggling mightily to keep his eyes open. His visions overtaxed his body, such a visceral feeling they inspired.

"Yer dog looks a m'ght bit tired. Is he 'ight?"

"He's alright, just needs a nap." he said, waving away the offered water. The hour grew late, Darrien himself felt his lids growing heavier. "I do believe it's time for the little one and me to take our leave. Pleasure making your acquaintances Lovely, Tex." he nodded to the pair in turn, keeping the grin quirked into his lips. He turned on his heels and scooped the now sleeping Sir Artemis Howell from the gravely rooftop and made his way back toward the stairs he'd ascended earlier.
