Come at Me, Bro!
Her things had already been dropped off, and Stella looked around her old room in satisfaction. She had been glad when Mai had told her that Mt Lance no longer felt it necessary to keep her and Lucas apart (and really, Mr Reed seemed to be an extremely old fashioned man, to go to such lengths just because he didn't want Lucas in a co-ed room), and really, the teacher had seemed to be more enthusiastic about it then Stella herself. She had practically beamed.

Stella started to unpack, unfolding her clothes and sorting out her bedding. She didn't have many decorations to put up, just a few posters and some books to stack on her desk, and she made her bed slowly. It was nice being back, where it was familiar, and she hadn't seen Lucas in so long either! Apart from Amber, he was the closest friend she'd had, and he'd been the first. From when he'd moved in they'd hit it off straight away, Smiling fondly, the star girl smoothed her doona cover and started hanging up her clothes.

There was so much to catch up on! From what she'd glimpsed before the Assembly, Lucas had been seriously working out, not to mention finally getting around to dating that pretty girl who'd been after him last year. Zxaine, she thought. From what she remembered, the other girl had been a bit unhappy Lucas was such good friends with another girl. Everyone seemed to have made such a fuss over that! Like the minute everyone's backs were turned they'd be at it like rabbits! It was a bit narrow minded...

The door behind her creaked and Stella straightened her back and turned expectantly. "Lucas?"

The assembly had drawn to a close, and Lucas and Zxaine had spent a little time away from the universe just being together. Six months did nothing but make him just kind of want to stare at her for a while; to intake everything that she possessed. Part of his mind had told him that if he looked away she might just disappear. He had spent so much time worrying that that might happen again already, it was time to stop dwelling. But that becomes difficult. Nevertheless, as they returned to the dormitories she had gone to her room and he to his; planning to no doubt see each other later.

As he had thought to open the door into an empty room, he would soon find that his assumptions were mistaken.

"Lucas?"

Barely a foot in the door and he was already stuck there, blocking the ajar door from closing. Emerald green eyes connected with the form before him. She looked different, he first noted, as though it was completely normal that she was standing there. "What-" He began. Then all his thoughts started conflicting with each other. Go over and hold onto her, because you have to tell her you miss her and you have to make sure she isn't going anywhere. Why does she think she can just come back here and set everything up as though the world didn't stop turning when she walked away. Ask her what happened; perhaps she deserves the benefit of the doubt. No she doesn't, she deserves nothing less than you taking all her belongings and throwing them out the window; at least then things might feel a little more even.

"Why are you here?"

"What-

Stella's first instinct was to move forward and wrap her arms around Lucas, to show she'd missed him. It hadn't even really registered how much until she was face to face with him, and could see the lights in his hair. She had already taken a step when his tone, and his expression, stopped her. Her blue eyes looked up at him, puzzled. "It's good to see you," she offered, blinking. And it was. Seeing him up close, that was, not just at a distance through a crowd. But his expression was unreadable, and her own happy smile was starting to fade along side the colour in her eyes. "Are you alr-"

"Why are you here?"

Something was very wrong. Frowning, Stella looked around as if to check she was in fact in the right place. "I got moved back," she explained patiently, "I thought you'd be pleased, actually." And it was hard not to sound hurt when he was staring at her like that, like she was some sort of unexpected monstrosity instead of one of his friends. But, it had been a long time. "I missed you," she said, because she had, she'd missed him and Amber a lot, but she hadn't been totally alone and so she had made some lovely new friends too. "Did you have a good holiday?" she tried, and inwardly winced. Small talk was not her forte, and she turned to straighten one of the corners of her bed sheet. There. Only fifteen minutes or so and it was like she had never left. That was a cheerful thought.

"I got moved back. I thought you'd be pleased, actually."

Lucas had scoffed, and this oddly enough turned into subtle laughter as he finally found himself able to leave his position in the doorway and enter his room. Running a hand through his hair, he used his free hand to retrieve his Aeon. He refused to look at her, hand shaking as he had to use the other to properly send out any kind of message. But who to ask, or to talk to. He tried to message Amber but the words and the phone would not cooperate and everything turned to an unreadable mess. He put it aside.

"I missed you,"

"You have to be kidding." He mumbled to himself.

"Did you have a good holiday?"

"No, Stella." He had said, and stopped himself. Even saying her name was like biting down on glass. As the Aeon fell into his pocket, he pushed off his back foot and quickly closed the distance between the two of them. Lucas stopped to leave a foot or so between them, his hands rising to touch down on her arms. Yes, she was there. As clear as anything else in the world. He took a few steps away from her, a few deep breaths. "Where did you go?" He stopped. His eyes narrowed on her. "Why did you go? Why didn't you say anything? What was I supposed to think?" They all seemed so important; these questions. "Where does that even leave you and I?"

Stella's eyebrows shot up at Lucas's strange laugh. She couldn't remember him making a sound like that before. She watched carefully as he wondered into his room and toyed with his Aeon, fiddling with her necklace. Why wouldn't he even look at her? That wasn't the boy she remembered at all! She stood and waited for him to turn around and look at her, mentally trying to understand just why he was so cross.

"You have to be kidding... No, Stella."

"Oh, I'm sorry..." she started but stopped speaking abruptly as he strode towards her. She waited for... for something. For a brief moment she thought he might kiss her, and the thought shocked her almost as much as the fact that it had occurred to her at all. But it was there, the startlingly vivid image and idea that he would lean forward and.. But he didn't touch her, and Stella let out a breath she had not been aware she was holding.

"Where did you go? Why did you go? Why didn't you say anything? What was I supposed to think? Where does that even leave you and I?"

Raising her hands as if to hold off an attack, Stella shook her head. "I was on holiday," she insisted, "and I couldn't contact anyone. We were out of range." The level of his anger seemed way out of proportion to what he seemed to be angry about, and Stella chewed on the inside of her cheek as she frowned back up at him. "I'm sorry I didn't let you know where I was going, I had no idea you'd worry, but I hope it leaves us still friends?" Her teeth found her lip instead and Stella looked up hopefully. He couldn't be that angry, could he? It wouldn't make sense.

"I'm sorry I didn't let you know where I was going, I had no idea you'd worry, but I hope it leaves us still friends?"

"I can't just be friends with you." Lucas quickly retorted, as though it had been a kneejerk reaction to say such a thing. He moved back further to sit on the edge of his bed; after everything that had happened, why was she acting like nothing had ever existed? Like she had never said all those things about living and breathing for each other, and how for as long as they needed to they were going to wait for each other until distance was no longer necessary. "They said you left because you couldn't deal with us being apart anymore." He informed, hanging his head low in his hands. Dark blue locks of hair cover his eyes from view.

Suddenly he finally caught notice of all her belongings that had been tucked away as though she might never have left. So many things were back in their original place. "Do you..." He began, and swallowed his words quickly. "Did you move back in here?" Obviously she had gotten the note about it, but he had not. He quickly stood up again, suddenly not wanting to be near the bed they used to share.

"What the hell is going on here?" It was insane. He must have been dreaming, finally he allowed his eyes to settle on her again. She looked different, but she didn't. "Am I supposed to pretend that there was nothing between us now?" The way she carried herself, the way she moved around the room. It was like she had completely forgotten Lucas' existence beyond a normal friendship.

"I can't just be friends with you."

Stella blinked, her mouth opening slightly in surprise. He'd said it so quickly, like he'd already decided before she was here. That hurt, that hurt a lot. She looked down and turned away slightly. "Why not?" she finally asked, her own voice a little clipped. "That seems a bit, well, that seems a bit harsh, doesn't it?" His friendship meant a lot to her, he had been the first person she'd really felt comfortable around, and now he was telling her that because she'd been unable to stay in touch over the break they weren't friends anymore?

"They said you left because you couldn't deal with us being apart anymore."

That was news, and surprise was easy to see on her face. "No, of course not! I wouldn't leave over your father being a bit old fashioned about who you shared a room with," she dismissed that with an incredulous shake of her head. But he looked really upset, and she contemplated going over to put a hand on his shoulder before remembering how he'd glared at her. That would probably not be a good idea. She looked up at the ceiling and exhaled slowly. This was not going as she had expected at all.

"Did you move back in here?"

Nodding, Stella looked back at him as he stood up. "Miss Mai told me," she explained, "she seemed very excited about it." Which still struck her as strange but then, a lot of things were starting to feel more than a little strange now.

"Am I supposed to pretend that there was nothing between us now?"

Her head tilting to the side, Stella's eyes went wide, and then narrowed. "Ah, you don't need to pretend anything," she said slowly, her confusion reaching new levels. "I just want us to go back to being friends. I'm sorry I upset you, I really am, but I never expected you'd be so angry about having to room with me again! I don't mind if you have Zxaine over or anything." Was that what the problem was? He'd wanted to room with his girlfriend? That was understandable, of course, but they'd roomed together for a year and he'd never seemed to have a problem with it then.

"Ah, you don't need to pretend anything,"

If there were true, this had just become the strangest break up in history.

"I just want us to go back to being friends. I'm sorry I upset you, I really am, but I never expected you'd be so angry about having to room with me again! I don't mind if you have Zxaine over or anything."

"I don't care if you live here. I-" He began, but he was not sure how to finish his sentence. He did care that she lived here. Of course he did; everything about the room had suddenly become riddled with memories. Every inch of its walls had something to share about how life used to be before she had disappeared. So in her mind, she had left in the form of a break up to go on holidays a month or so early for no real reason? If the world could whisper to him, it would fight against his consciousness with all these stories and situations. The window; where she had been pulled from his arms and taken away. That night she had pulled him into a life or death situation whereby he nearly lost his to save hers. And they decided afterwards that every moment needed to last if they were going to make it through.

His hand ran across his bed slowly, stopping as his fingers tightened around the hues of blue that covered the mattress. She had always taken to the colour.

"Do whatever you want. I don't care." Lucas said suddenly, walking towards the door to his room and taking hold of the handle. "You aren't who I remember anymore." And with that he was gone, out the door and down the hall.

This was all wrong. What could possibly have happened during the break to have changed him so much? Stella watched him go, her expression unreasonable. She realized what he was going to do about two moments before he had pulled the door open and took a step towards him. He'd done this before, hadn't he? They'd had a fight before about... about his family, she thought. Maybe. That made sense, his father seemed to cause more than one problem for the blue haired meta.

"Do whatever you want. I don't care. You aren't who I remember anymore."

Her face froze for a moment and Stella looked honestly hurt. "Neither are you," she called as he walked out the door, and fell back onto her bed. Curling up on her side the star girl's face crumpled for a moment and she sniffed once. What a way to start the new year here. She needed to talk to someone. Pulling her Aeon out of her pocket, Stella quickly found Louis's number and hit dial. He wouldn't be horrible to her for no reason.
