It had been hours since the assembly and as soon as it was over Andrew had retreated back to his room. He had promised the queen he would finish building her habitat before the day was over, she would not be pleased if she had to spend another day nesting in his pant leg and frankly he would be glad to be rid of her, her incessant nagging was driving him crazy. In order to make her as comfortable as possible he had replaced the entire wall that ran parallel to his bed with a fully functional ant farm. He had already placed some of the queens worker ants in the farm, they had already done most of the digging for him tomorrow he would searching for more workers to satisfy his queen tomorrow but for now it would have to do. He hadn't even bothered to unpack his own things which sat in suitcases in the center of the room, not that he had much other then a few changes of clothes and what was necessary for him to survive. He hadn't even had a chance to meet his roommate yet but he knew the name; Dayne King. He hadn't even stopped to think if Dayne would mind the wall that he had already converted in his absence, the Queens needs came before any human. Andrew stepped on top of his bed and slowly placed the queen into the farm. She stared up at him, her face twisted with dissatisfaction. "You call this a home? My farm back at the manor was twice this size! And the workers here, incompetent! How am i supposed to live in this place?" She squealed as she slowly began to descend deeper into the center of the farm. "Oh don't start with me you lazy screw, what right do you have to complain all you do all day is sit around eating and reproducing with these "incompetent workers." That's right i know all about it!" He hollered back at her watching her finally come to a stop in the throne room he had designed specially for her. "Fine whatever, i humbly accept your makeshift nest as my own, seriously look at this place it's moments away from a cave in!" She said scratching the side of one of the makeshift walls. Andrew sighed and curled down onto the bed resting his head against the glass of the farm where the queens nest was. It had been a long day already and he found himself to tired to fight with her. "I'm sorry my dear, i promise I'll find you some better workers tomorrow." "You had better." She had gone quiet now seemingly contempt with her victory over him Andrew ran his hand over the glass and sighed before loosing himself in a discussion with some of the workers over the quality of the burrows they had built. It took Dayne a few seconds to take in what she was seeing. The girl had opened the door to her dorm and stood there, blinking, at the huge ant farm. Well that's new. Closing the door behind her, Dayne stepped around the suitcase and sat on her bed. Her room mate seemed to be talking to the wall. Again, that struck her as something that she might be, should be bothered by. Then again, after the assembly, it had really sunken in that nothing was exactly normal here. She'd spent a good five minutes looking up ways a man could live with a metal rod through his neck. Results were inconclusive. Still, the staff seemed to be not boring, so that was always good. Even if some of the subjects sounded a bit odd. Survival skills? Would there be camping? Dayne didn't go camping. Last time her family had tried, when she was 15, it had ended with her breaking into the camping ground's guard house to sit by the television. Her own stuff, on the side of the room that was not ant hill decoratd, was scatterd around without much order, her guitar resting on her bed and the amp at the end. Options: ignore strange boy and lie back on her bed with her headphones blasting Otis Redding, ignore strange boy and spend more time getting to know her Aeon, ignore strange boy and get her laptop out to check out what was happening in the city and send an email home, or. and this was the one she was least inclined towards (and therefore most likely the most socially acceptable) attempt conversation in order to be polite... the kid as lucky it was her first day and she was trying to fit in. "Hi," she finally said, and tried to inject some enthusiasm into her voice as she smiled. "Who are you talking to?" There were other questions, of course, like what's with the huge ant house and is it cool if I rig up like, thirty screens over on my side then or do you talk to yourself all the time because that's cool but I'll just wear my headphones. |

Andrew craned his head and watched as Dayne entered the room. He instantly felt his throat close up keeping any noise from exiting his mouth. With a name like Dayne King he had assumed his roommate would be a boy, he had never had to live with a girl before, except for his mother of course. He was thankful the queen had fallen asleep already she certainly would not be pleased when she woke up and discovered another female would be sharing her room. “I...thought you were a boy.” He said staring directly at her with his most off putting stare. He did not do this intentionally it was how he looked at everyone; years of mainly interacting with insects had left him somewhat unaware of social graces between humans. How could she not see who he was talking to? He had devoted an entire wall to his creatures it seemed to him obvious but he felt he should at least explain. “I was speaking with the ants....” Again in a tone with implied absolute normality with his actions. He pointed towards the Queens room who was now sleeping soundly. “She was complaining about the workers not being up to her standards, once she’s rested she will be fine.” His tone indicated that somehow this should put his new roommate at ease, most women he had met found insects off putting he reasoned that he should at try to assure her that his pets would not harm her in anyway. He again gently stroked the thin glass over where his queen slept smiling as he did. “Tomorrow I will probably find more, the more workers she has the happier she is.” |

Dayne met his stare with her own blank gaze, clearly not phased. Social graces were so far from her thing they might as well be on Mars, and besides no one could stare like a computer monitor. She blinked, then shrugged. Clearly, she was not a boy. Well, mostly clearly. Why he felt the need to voice he'd made a mistake was beyond her, but she shrugged, because that seemed to be an appropriate response. "Nope," she finally said, and rubbed a hand over the back of her neck. "I'm a girl." “I was speaking with the ants....” Again, if Andrew was expecting a reaction to his tone from Dayne he would be disapointed. That was a bit over her head. Instead, the technopath shrugged again. Made sense to her. She talked to her computers, just not out loud. So he could speak to insects. That would interesting. What kind of personality did ants have, anyway? “She was complaining about the workers not being up to her standards, once she’s rested she will be fine.” Dayne frowned slightly, trying to pick up what he meant. "I'm not afraid of ants," she pointed out, sitting back on her bed and ideally checking the messages that were passing through her brain. There was nothing electric in the ant farm, the slight hum against her skin coming from the stack of gadgets in her bag that were still running on their batteries. "Are they going to stay in there? Because having ants around the room could be a bit not good." They might crawl into her stuff and disconnect a circut with their tiny ant bodies. Would that count as murder then? “Tomorrow I will probably find more, the more workers she has the happier she is.” She was really lost now. What was she supposed to do? Because even the distant, sort of dream like emotional reactions she had to things were coming up blank here. "Ok," she said slowly, eyebrows dropped as she frowned. "There are a million ants per person in the world," she added helpfully with her first random fact of the day, "so there must be some around here." |

It seemed the girl was almost as socially inept as he was. In a way he was happy, at least she wasn't going to be overly loud or aggravating. The queen might even accept living with her as long as things stayed this way. He shuddered to think how she would have reacted if Dayne were to type to throw wild parties in their room. He could not help but frown when she asked if his ants would stay in the tank. As far as he was concerned the room was as much theirs as hers. What if he wasn't there to look after them? Were simply expected to be left to rot. "no, they'll probably go where they please, as they should." His tone showed more aggravation then was meant, in all likely most of the ants would likely only leave the farm to search for food or travel with him but her comment implied they were his pets, not his friends. It always bothered him how others treated insects like pests to be avoided, but the day would come when this was no longer the case. He heard a whisper from the farm, he suddenly pressed his ear against it completely obvious to Dayne. The worker cautioned him to be nice to her, they would have to at least learn to get along in order to co-habitate. "Just as you do..." he whispered back to the worker. before turning back to his new room mate. He was right after all and Andrew knew he would at least have to try and get along with her. "What is it you can do?" He said again staring directly at her. By now most people were put off by his blank stares and whispered voice. It was strangely comforting that this girl seemed unbothered by his presence. |

"no, they'll probably go where they please, as they should." Dayne regonised the defensiveness in his voice, but it took her a moment to put the two together. So, she had signed up for one roommate and had gotten a whole colony. "That will be a problem," The technopath glanced at the ant farm and Dayne's eyebrow quicked up to punctuate her words before her face settled back into indifference. "Nothing against your little guys, and they can do whatever they want, but they stay on your side of the room." It seemed fair to her. And if they did get into her stuff, she'd rig up a hug zapper .As he was whispering to the ant farm again, Dayne quickly started looking up how exactly she could rig one up, because once she'd had an idea like that, she always wanted to know just what exactly would be needed. Again, nothing against the ants, but Dayne was equally attached to her computer and her assortments of gagets. Have one of them short out because a little ant had gotten himself (or herself) stuck between currents was not acceptable. That would be like one of her friends dying on her. And sure, she could fix them most of the time but their absense would be horrible while it lasted. Aware that her voice was starting to get a bit defensive, Dayne turned and began to open up her bag to show what she meant, and because she needed to set up her stuff. The school seemed to provide a desk, but it was a bit small... Turning with her arms full of hard drives and plastic casing, she started to spread them out. "If they crawl into these, it might fry them," she pointed out, starting to set up her main computer. "What is it you can do?" Dayne looked back over her shoulder, wires in her hands. "I talk to machines, I guess," she said slowly, 'they aren't great conversationalists though." With a dry smile she plugged her monitor into the drive, and connected it up. There wasn't a keyboard yet, she hadn't linked it up, but it wasn't strictly nessesary unless she was trying to code. "I can make them run better, and I get, ah, I pick up stuff like emails and messages." This was a conversation topic she could follow on with, though she turned back to start up Ziggy (yes, she named her computer. When it was what you spent most of your time talking to it didn't seem as crazy) "What else do you do, apart from the insect communicartion?" she asked. "Do spiders count? Can you talk to them?" |

The tension between the two had seemingly washed away so he decided to leave it where it was. Later on he would make sure his creatures were respectful of her wishes, he was sure if he warned them that they could possibly be electrocuted by venturing too close to Daynes things they would see reason and avoid them. So she could talk to machines? Perhaps whoever decided to place them together did have a plan after all. Neither seemed particularly fond of socialization, perhaps like him she was happier spending time with her machines then with people. He would have to ask her later. "I talk to machines, I guess," "Do they respond when you speak to them or do you simply tell them what to do?" The question, again could have been interpreted incorrectly. But he couldn't help but find it curious. Andrew was able to have entire conversations with insects, something most people would dismiss as impossible perhaps machine were similar for her? "What else do you do, apart from the insect communication?....Do spiders count? Can you talk to them?" "It seems for now spiders are a bit above my current powers. I can call to insects in the surrounding area to assist me if needed, not just ants either; bees, wasps, butterflies usually anything about that size. If need be i can control them, although I find doing so disrespectful." Watching her unpack her things had suddenly made him feel very awkward about having not done the same. He climbed off his bed and began unzipping his smallest suitcase. IT seemed that doing something with his hands to distract for her made it easier for him to speak to her. He continued to unpack and place is clothes in his dresser as he continued. "I can also see as they see, I sometimes spend hours in the mind of an ant, crawling through the tunnels gathering food. Every action to them has purpose, there is no time to waste." He found himself once again drifting from the conversation. It was something that happened to him quite a lot no matter how hard he tried. If he had his way he wasn't sure he would be human, he had little tying him to this life only his promise to the Queen to fight for all insects everywhere. |

"Do they respond when you speak to them or do you simply tell them what to do?" "Bit of both, really," Dayne said after a moment's thought, doing a quick formatting check on Ziggy as she talked. "Not really in words, though. It's like... they have suggestions on how they could work better. But sometimes I just ask them to do things." They weren't conversations in the normal sense, but they could keep Dayne amused for hours which was more than any human she'd met could do. Also they didn't bother about double meanings and subtly. Did ants? Worth asking at some point. "It seems for now spiders are a bit above my current powers. I can call to insects in the surrounding area to assist me if needed, not just ants either; bees, wasps, butterflies usually anything about that size. If need be i can control them, although I find doing so disrespectful." "Respect isn't really an issue with computers and stuff," Dayne thought out loud, stretching her neck to the side until it cracked. "But that sounds like it would turn a few heads." The mental image of a line of ants carrying Andrew around the school while butterflies carried his books made her mouth twitch into a smile. Probably best about the spiders. She really didn't like spiders. Those things were creepy. ""I can also see as they see, I sometimes spend hours in the mind of an ant, crawling through the tunnels gathering food. Every action to them has purpose, there is no time to waste." It sounded a bit intense. Not the mind borrowing stuff, but the rush rush rush thing. "Busy as an ant is a true saying then I guess?" she put out, then turned back to keep digging through her bag. Picking up a bag of guitar picks, Dayne had a sudden thought. "Do you like music? Or do the ants, I mean? I play sometimes. I can do requests if something helps them work." She was being pretty honest and only a little sarcastic, because sure it sounded absurd to play for ants but if they were her roommates it was best they liked her too. Ants would destroy the world in three days in they had nukes, she'd read that somewhere. Those little guys were not to be messed with. |

Andrew had to force himself not to scoff at Dayne's comments. What could would music made by humans be to ants? Remembering the workers comment earlier about cohabitation he took a moment to compose himself before again turning to the girl. "Human music to ants sounds much the same as humans talking, they don't understand it nor do they wish to." Andrew had in fact tried something similar when his powers had first emerged, he had thought singing "the ants go marching one by one" would somehow increase their productivity. The ants had not appreciated his vocal styling and asked him to never do that again. Still somewhat desperate to keep the conversation flowing he decided to add. "Some ants do sing, although not so much for entertainment mainly for practical use. Leaf cutter ants for example sing to alert others that they have found a decent food supply. It's not the same though it's close. Some female ants when they take their mating flight will also sing to call males to them. It makes me laugh imagining a human female doing the same" Even mentioning the scenario had caused Andrew to burst into a hushed giggle to himself, more of a maniacal chuckle then anything else but considering most of his bizarre mannerisms had barely caused the girl to bat an eye he was sure she wouldn't be phased. |

It was becoming very clear to Dayne that her new room mate found trying to have a conversation as bewildering as she did. He also seemed anxious to at least try, like she did. They were going to be living together after all. But people were so strange.... And so, it appeared, where ants. But that did sound like one of the most sensible things she'd heard all day. Music was much better than just talking to express emotion, even if they were limited to an ant's tiny tiny vocal chords. Dayne tried to picture a winged girl singing to call men to her. It didn't strike her as particularly funny, but she gave a laugh all the same. She'd been practising it. "Sort of like a siren then, only they don't kill the males when they reach them," Dayne added, then paused. Actually, given the behaviour of spiders... "Do they?" The sirens in God of War wondered around trying to kill you, and that was really the only reference she had on the matter. There was even less in her data banks on ants. She'd never felt the need to research ants before, not in depth. That might have to change. "Machines hum, and that's a sort of singing I guess," Dayne mused, turning back to her bag and rummeging around for her tool kit. Just wire cutters of different sizes, mostly, and a few screw drivers. "How long have you know the queen then? You carried her all the way here?" That would have been an interesting plane trip, that was for sure. How did you smuggle a queen ant through customs? |

"Sort of like a siren then, only they don't kill the males when they reach them...do they?" Andrew knew very little about Sirens, he knew they were female women but apart from that he had no idea about the comparison. He wasn't sure how to respond to the question but he thought perhaps if he continued talking about ant reproduction the conversation would continue unhindered. "No they don't kill them after they mate, though a female ant will often have many sexual partners to improve her chances of getting pregnant. I'm not sure if that's similar to how humans mate, how many sexual partners have you had?" Andrew was of course oblivious to the potentially invasive question he had asked. Humans were complex creatures who shifting social stances on subjects had always alluded him ants had no secrets, there was no time there was always work to be done, there was no time within them for subtly. "How long have you know the queen then? You carried her all the way here?" Andrew smiled to himself as he remembered his first meeting with the queen. They had only known each other for a short time however their bond was something no human would ever truly understand. It was a deep seeded love that also brought pain to him, for they could never truly be together, at least not as he would have liked. "I've known the queen for almost four years now, getting her here was at times difficult. I flew you see so to pass through security she had to crawl inside of me." He fondly remembered the feeling of the ant queen resting within his nostril. Mainly because she had absolutely hated the experience, she had complained almost the entire way from her hiding shot with every breath she feared she would be sucked deeper into his body. Best of all Andrew was unable to respond to her the entire time, to do so would have gotten them both into trouble. |

"No they don't kill them after they mate, though a female ant will often have many sexual partners to improve her chances of getting pregnant. I'm not sure if that's similar to how humans mate, how many sexual partners have you had?" Dayne had been half listening as she had started to work on getting familiar with the electronics in the room. On her feet and in the middle of examining the hot plate (excellent, she could work with that) and the electric kettle, she turned around to look at Andrew in mild shock. That wasn't a usual thing to ask, Dayne was positive. Still, it wasn't that bothersom, given her answer. "I don't have sex," she answered honestly, looking back to the kettle and peering inside. "I don't find myself sexually aroused by males or females my own age, or older. I assume I'm asexual. I appear to fit that definition, though I may be a homo or hetero romantic. I intend to find out this year." It occured to her that she could now ask the same question of Andrew, given he'd taken the first step and put that particular topic on the acceptable list. Dayne was still wondering if she really wanted to know when she heard him answer her next question. "I've known the queen for almost four years now, getting her here was at times difficult. I flew you see so to pass through security she had to crawl inside of me." The hotplate switched on and Dayne's comptuer screen suddenly clicked to loud white noise as the light fittings sparked. It was Dayne's way of having a minor freak out. "What?" she asked, her voice a little higher pitched, then held up a hand. "No. No, I don't want to know. There are several orifaces that would hide a queen ant. Leaev it vauge, please." Wareily Dayne looked the ant farm and backed away, still clutching her kettle. "You and the queen must be.... really... really close," she muttered, diving for the safey of her side of the room. |

"I don't find myself sexually aroused by males or females my own age, or older. I assume I'm asexual. I appear to fit that definition, though I may be a homo or hetero romantic. I intend to find out this year." Dayne's words were something Andrew could certainly sympathize with, although he was unable how to articulate his own feelings on the matter. His heart belonged to his queen however he was in fact still a human. As much as the thought of laying with a woman made him feel sick to his core he felt he was still a slave to his body, as such he was still driven by the lustful urges of an average teenager. It was what made sharing a room with a woman all the more distressing for him, even now talking to Dayne a part of him felt as if he was cheating on his beloved queen. "You and the queen must be.... really... really close," Andrew smiled at this comment and slowly climbed back onto his bed, he sat crossed legged now not even paying attention to Dayne, he turned to face the ant farm placing his hand once again on the spot where the queen had made her home. He stroked the glass offering it the warmest smile possible. "She is my queen, and I am her servant I love her." Andrew had no idea if Dayne was still even listening nor did he truly care he had drifted off into his own world again one where he and his queen were together, soon he thought to himself, soon their will come a day where we can finally rule together. |

"She is my queen, and I am her servant I love her." Dayne looked down at her kettle in concern. There was something going on in her stomach. It was a little like nausea, maybe? Was she nauseous? No, she hadn't' eaten anything that would have caused that sort of a reaction, and none of the other physical symptoms of an upset stomach were there. What was it? Was it... was it actually something like disgust? Or revulsion? Huh. Maybe. Fascinating. Dayne lay back on her bed and concentrated. Maybe not disgust. It was sort of a sick, unpleasant feeling at the idea of what was clearly just a taboo idea. What would they even call it? Bestiality made sense as there were beasts big enough to engage in intercourse with, but insectality? No, no, there were no bugs large enough, though perhaps non pena- The feeling was getting stronger now. Dayne frowned and picked up her Aeon and closed her eyes. Slowly, carefully, she started looking for the messaged and signals that flew through her mind like she was some sort of fleshy satellite. There. No more thoughts about ants and people and what some people felt about ants. So much better. Still, Dayne took a mental note of what it felt like to be repulsed. It was useful data, after all. And anyway, a strange and creepy roommate was much better than a boring one. Edited by belovedstranger, Apr 27 2012, 12:40 AM.
