The thing that goes bump in the night
A beautiful, peaceful late spring afternoon brings the students out of their dorms like little else. A crisp breeze carries a Frisbee between a pair of identical twin boys (or rather, a single boy, sprinting faster than the eye can see, playing catch with himself); a bed of soft green grass sets the stage for a romantic picnic cut straight from a John Hughes movie; golden sand played across the bare feet of several students playing a game of volleyball on the beach. Darrien sauntered past all of this and more, hands in the pockets of his tailor perfect linen trousers, bare chest exposed as the breeze blew his open lavender shirt back as he walked. His rainbow hair blew back, weaving a colorful trail in his wake.

It didn't take long at all for him to arrive at his destination. Cool blue waters splashing playfully on a hot day, who wouldn't be drawn to that? Paying no attention to the eyes around him, he stepped out of his shoes, carefully placed his socks in them, shrugged out of his shirt, and slid his trousers down around his ankles. Carefully folding his clothes and putting them in a neat pile on top of a bed of fallen branches (no way he was going to allow sand to get into his pants, you have any idea how much that itches?), he waded into the water waist deep, allowing his lower body to adjust to the change in temperature. Spreading his arms out wide, he leaned back until he plummeted into the water. His rainbow locks flowed in perfectly uniform colored streams as he paddled back and forth in the cool water.

Dayne had been spending most of her spare time, when not in her room, trying out her Aeon. It was quite possibly one of the best things she had ever seen in her life. Ever. For the last two hours, the technopath had been testing the various functions with increasing excitement. It had everything that her smart phone did, but the scanner was new. She'd tried it on everything in her room, from her guitar to Andrew's friend the ant queen to the wireless little robot droid she'd made from taking apart one of those Japanese robot dogs and it had identified everything. Even if the description had been a little condescending... [ a hand made droid. Sloppy craftsmanship ].

Still that hadn't dulled her enthusiasm, and the technopath had just started trying out the teleporation function's range. It had gotten her to the quad easily, and from there to the gym. To the casual observer it must have appeared strange, a tall girl flickering into view, looked around with a grin and disappearing again.

And then she miscalculated. Dayne had set her coordinates for somewhere in the grounds, a place she wouldn't ever go without some sort of reason. Too much fresh air, it had to be bad for you. Like a scene out of some tv show, the technopath's atoms reassembled right over the middle of Lake Nica. Dayne had a second to glance down and roll her eyes before she hit the water with a loud splash. Typical.

Mirael simply wasn't the kind of a girl who would lie in the bed on peaceful days like this.
Well, usually. Even she had her days, after all. And there were only so many old games and books she could digest before something snapped in her head, propelling her into the Great Outside.

Regardless, the 10th grader had made her way towards the lake, wearing a pair of red, loose, long shorts and a short-sleeved white shirt (though she seemed slightly dirty, as if she had fallen over or crashed into something on her way...not that this was unusual for her). Her red-framed glasses poked out from the shirt's pocket, and the blue/violet haired girl stopped to put them on, allowing herself to see properly again. Maybe she really should quit working on her ability like this. This was the fifth time she had walked into a dumpster, this week.

On such a warm day, people liked to gather near water, and she didn't have much else to do than to observe the area for anything or anyone interesting, hoping something moderately entertaining would happen.

Idly, she noticed the boy playing catch with himself.
Wonder how lonely a kid has to be to play catch alone in public, she thought, slowly wandering and letting her eyes shamelessly scan the people nearby. Mirael had never been the type to be bothered by how weirded out people were by her observations. What did it matter to her, really--

Somehow, she knew something had changed before she even saw or heard it, whipping around to look at the lake...oh. Did someone fall in? Curious, she walks closer to the edge of the water. How did someone manage to fall in the middle of the lake?
Mirael pulls her Aeon device out from the pocket of her shorts and takes a picture of the water rippling in the middle of the body of water. Maybe she could pretend it was caused by a giantic lake serpent or a water bigfoot or something. Some gossip rags paid people for these kinds of pictures these days, didn't they?

...How does someone manage to have rainbow coloured hair, for that matter? Did the person's mother have sex with an unicorn or something? She contemplates taking a picture of that, too, but decides that while rippling water can't sue her, the...thing with that kind of a hairdo probably could. Oh well, that was trivial at the moment. The glasses-wearing girl ruffles her hair and adjusts her glasses, waiting to see how the people around would deal with this. Watching people react was always entertaining.

SPLASH

That couldn't possibly be good. Rising from the water, Darrien's hair fell back into a perfect array, followed by sculpted shoulders, a tightly corded trunk of muscle wrapped around a sleek frame, and the waistband of electric yellow boxers. Glancing toward the shore, he saw a girl with her Aeon out. Typical, new students were grabbing for his attention and snapping pictures to send home all the time.

"You could just ask, I'd have posed for you if you'd wanted." he called out, swiping his hand through his hair. The water running from his locks ran clear, no dye in his hair to speak of. He scanned the area around the girl, looking for possible projectiles large enough to make such a splash. Coming up empty, he spun around to review the cause of the commotion, and noticed small bubbles rising to the surface.

Swimming his way through the cool waters of the lake, Darrien arrived at the scene in no time. Not noticing anything amiss, however, he simply treaded water for a moment, regaining his bearings, scanning beneath the surface for something that may be breathing.

As he was about to turn back to the shore, however, his foot grazed something soft and warm, something terrestrial, something alive. Frozen for the moment, the youth prodded with his foot, seeking purchase on an appendage to dive for.

Well this is embaressing..

It wasn't that Dayne couldn't swim. She just wasn't very good, and her jeans were weighing her down as she took a gulp of air and water (mostly air) and sank below again. The cold of the water also made her legs and arms feel sluggish and the technopath tried to open her eyes to punch in a new coordinate on her Aeon. This was an excellent time to find out if the phone also worked under water. Also to see how long she could hold her breath. Maybe if she kicked off the jeans...

Better yet... Dayne concentrated, sorting through the information that constantly streamed past to send an email/tex/beep to everyone within the immediate area.

[ help needed. In lake. ]

That should do it...

Her lungs were burning quite badly, DAyne noted when she left the subspace in her head. She might need air, but her legs didn't want to kick. Her mouth opened in a silent yell when something prodded her arm, and again tried to open her eyes as she felt around the water for it. She could pull herself up to the surface, because she really needed air. Right now. This very instant. When the strange thing knocked her again, Dayne wrapped her hands around it and yanked hard, pulling herself up. Air had no taste, of course. Not really, unless there was some other gas present. Still, the air tasted pretty damn good, so the technopath took another greedy mouthful and looked around.

"Hello," she said to the boy she appeared to have dunked. Despite the near death (or near near death) experience, Dayne sounded like she'd just run into someone in a coffee shop. "Thanks for the leg. I don't swim well."

Good thing she didn't have to do anything. Seeing effort for complete strangers wasn't really her thing, unless there was no one else around and she was really, really bored.
After rolling her eyes at the...thing (though she wonders if he would have posed if she had asked him to go stand on four legs in a horse stable and glue a paper horn on his forehead), Mirael just watched the events unfold, idly noticing the request for help on her device.

Why bother when it was being taken care of? Though she did gesture at the...guy to bring the person back. Getting the water out of her lungs, if any had gotten in, was probably a good idea, and that was difficult to do in the middle of the lake. And really, the girl doubted the Great Lake Serpent wanted to stay in its natural habitat any longer than necessary, after that experience.

"Need a hand?"
Well, she supposed she was in a good enough mood to shout the offer of assistance, though she didn't think it was really needed. The person didn't look even half-drowned, though she might have been a bit heavy, considering what she seemed to be wearing.

Hands grasped his leg and began pulling. This wasn't entirely unexpected, but caused him to sink underwater for a second none the less. Regaining his composure quickly, Darrien provided as solid a ladder as he could while the girl pulled herself to the surface.

"Hello,"

"Thanks for the leg. I don't swim well."

She seemed oddly detached, especially having been in such peril moments earlier. Oh well, D could roll on. "No trouble love, might I ask how you ended up in the middle of the lake here?" he asked in his most even tone. He supported his and the girl's weight easily, powerful legs churning beneath the water, sturdy arms maintaining their buoyancy.

"Need a hand?"

"I think we can manage." he called back, flashing his damsel a quick smile. "Shall we make for dry land then?" he asked before turning to swim back, Dayne in tow. "Hold on tight, I'd hate for you to sink again." And he was off, towing his passenger back toward the lake shore.

He was still holding onto her. Dayne looked down at where his arms held her up with obvious surprise and a little hint of suspicion. This looked too much like some sort of teen romance movie. Still, it seemed logical that without the added boost she'd sink again and as she was unable to open her eyes underwater, teleporting was right out. Her ladder/rescuer was looking at her a bit oddly though, so she tried for what she assumed and hoped was a grateful smile.

"No trouble love, might I ask how you ended up in the middle of the lake here?"

"Not love, Dayne," the technopath corrected absently, and held up her now quite wet but still apparently operational phone. Underwater her legs kicked a bit to try and help keep her afloat. "I was testing the teleportation and didn't check my co-ordinates," she explained, looking slightly more enthused, "but I found out that the Aeon works when submerged about 4 feet deep in water so it was worth it!" Her dark purple eyes were bright with enthusiasm for a change, though it might have been from being cold.

"Need a hand?"

Dayne twisted her neck to see who was calling and waved a long arm. "Not dead!" she reported loudly, because that was probably what the girl had been wondering.

"I think we can manage."

Why was he smiling at her again? Dayne returned it with a slightly stiff smile of her own and was about to ask how exactly they were supposed to get back when he started swimming. He was like some sort of humanoid dolphin! Dayne opened her mouth to say so and found it had filled with water, which she spat out. It would keep.

"Hold on tight, I'd hate for you to sink again."

Dayne would dislike that too, so she did hold on, though she still felt it was like when you saw photos of someone swimming with a dolphin or a seal. Still, the mud on the lake sure felt nice and solid under her feet once they were in the shallows and she wadded out. Water ran off her in streams, plastering her t-shirt tight against her skin and her hair flat against her face. Pushing it out of her eyes, Dayne shook herself like a dog to get rid of the excess then looked up. "Sorry," she said to the girl who was standing nearby. "Quickest way to get rid of some of the water. No towel." She turned and looked at the boy who'd picked her up, glancing up and down with detached confusion. "Where are your clothes? Also, thank you."

...Then Mirael was splattered with water, not even bothering to step back to avoid getting more of it on herself. Why bother? Going back to her room in a wet, white shirt that clung nicely to her form was more amusing than going there in a dirty and dry white shirt. Now, if she made the right shortcuts, she should be able to cause some lovely chaos...

She'd be annoyed if she hadn't already known the Aeon is waterproof (she had thrown it into the sink and let water run down on it for a couple of hours while dragging her stuff in after arriving). As it is, she simply shrugs and takes her glasses off her face to dry them off with a sleeve. "Don't worry about it, Mighty Lake Creature. It's prolly hard for you to not be all wet and dripping after all that."
The girl smiles (a bit too brightly) at the girl (ignoring the...guy), putting her glasses back on.

"Unicorn boy left his clothes on those branches," she drawls, glancing at the rainbow haired person. "Good luck shaking the insects out, by the way."

A tall elven loomer---THE tall elven loomer... just happens. Where did she come from? Why did she come there? Well, she was probably observing the surroundings -- she IS observing the surroundings, but let's keep this here for the dramatic effect.

Except, at some point, she stopped observing the surroundings and started observing the people.

The amusing, amusing people.

Sathyre wouldn't speak up, no - she would just stand by and watch, like the creepso she was.

Keeping on the grass, keeping away from water...

"Not love, Dayne,"

"I was testing the teleportation and didn't check my co-ordinates,"

"but I found out that the Aeon works when submerged about 4 feet deep in water so it was worth it!"

Darrien laughed, searching the girl's face he found she wasn't at all concerned with her brush with death. "That's good to know, I can keep mine on me next time I go for a dip. Though, if you want to join me, you could ask instead of just dropping in." An unflappable smile graced his lips as they arrived on the shore. Wasn't every day people fell out of thin air. "I'm not much of a fan of teleporting with that thing. Always feel like there's a piece missing..." he trailed off as Dayne shook herself off, then had her exchange with the other girl.

"Where are your clothes? Also, thank you."

"Unicorn boy left his clothes on those branches,"

"Good luck shaking the insects out, by the way."

Unicorn? True, he was a rare specimen, and his (horn) could grant wishes, but really? Stepping away from Dayne, he eyed the girl with the glasses, careful to keep a measure of distance. "You're welcome love, sorry, Dayne. Yes, I came here fully dressed, I wasn't exactly intending on having a swim, the urge just sort of overwhelmed me." Stretching his arms behind him, the muscles in his chest punching themselves out, he glanced around the area. Turning to the girl with the glasses, he inclined his head slightly "I don't believe I've seen either of you before. I'm Darrien, and we have Dayne here" indicating the drippy girl with a gesture "who might you be?" he asked the final member of their little trio.

"Don't worry about it, Mighty Lake Creature. It's prolly hard for you to not be all wet and dripping after all that."

Dayne had leant to the side and and was trying to wring out her hair, and looked up sheepishly. "I'm not a lake creature," she corrected automatically, shivering slightly as more cold water ran down her nec, then tilted her head to the side and wacked her ear a few times to try and unclog them. "and it's impossible, actually. But I should be leaning mreot woards damp then saturated in a bit with the wind." Patting down her pcokets, the technopath pulled out her phone and shook it to dislodge any water. Why did it have to get in everything?

"Unicorn boy left his clothes on those branches,"

Unicorn boy? Looking around, the technopath narrowed her eyes and then nodded. Reference to hair. Some sort of joke then. She gave a slightly mechanical laugh to show 'I get it, that was a joke and it was funny and I appreciate it because I have a sense of humor too' and then managed to find something interesting on her now sodden shoes to look at to hide her slightly confused frown.

"I don't believe I've seen either of you before. I'm Darrien, and we have Dayne here"

Straightening as she heard her name, Dayne nodded. "I'm new," she confirmed, and rubbed her arms. The wind was drying her off but it was also raising goosebumps up her arms, and her feet made squelchy noises when she shifted her weight and glanced at Darrien. "Is spontanious swimming something you do often?" she wondered out loud.

Mirael glanced at the newcomer - it was that Merekki again. Did that elf get everywhere? She simply raised an eyebrow at the dark-skinned girl before turning back to the conversation.
The girl was a bit confused as to why this...teleporting person was laughing, but supposed it wasn't really that important.

"Well, I'm all new, hip and just happening, so I'd be a bit weirded out and interested if you somehow did manage to see me around before," she replied, lazily stretching. "I am Eight, as in the number. And that..."

She gestured at the looming girl, while calmly stepping to a spot that was a bit further away from the Personal Space Violator. "That is Merekki. Also a new thing around these parts, from what I gather. She likes looming over people and rambling, though I guess her height makes it difficult for her to not do that. Looming over people, that is," it's difficult to tell if she is trying to be mean or not, though it's possible that she was just being her often blunt self.

"Sathyre Merekki, if you please. Or if you don't please. My name won't change because of such trivial reasons. I don't see how introducing my humble self is your business, Numberette, but I suppose you can do whatever you want." Sathyre smiles in a lighthearted, sunny way - no matter how her words might've sounded.

Can someone loom while standing aside from most others? Apparently, yes, as this is exactly what Sathyre is doing.

Loner vibes overwhelming.

"I'm new,"

Fair enough, new students were always popping in around the school. Darrien had once made an effort to meet every last one, but that proved to be too difficult a task even for on so socially magnanimous as himself, so he'd settled for making himself known to all of them.

"Well, I'm all new, hip and just happening, so I'd be a bit weirded out and interested if you somehow did manage to see me around before,"

Also, too, glasses seemed to be new, as well, altogether.

"I am Eight, as in the number. And that..."

She gestured at the proverbial fly on the wall, indicating the tall girl Darrien's hadn't registered yet.

"That is Merekki. Also a new thing around these parts, from what I gather. She likes looming over people and rambling, though I guess her height makes it difficult for her to not do that. Looming over people, that is,

Names paired with faces, committed to a place in his memory he'd call on when needed.

"Sathyre Merekki, if you please. Or if you don't please. My name won't change because of such trivial reasons. I don't see how introducing my humble self is your business, Numberette, but I suppose you can do whatever you want."

And apparently these two had some measure of acquaintance prior to this chance encounter.

"Delightful meeting the lot of you." he spoke evenly, looking each in the eye in turn. Running a hand through his rapidly drying coif, his locks falling into perfect line even in the wind, a grin played at his lips. "Seems we've arrived at an impasse loves. We stand at the edge of a beautifully cool lake on this steamy day, and I'm the only one dressed -down- for a swim." he rolls his shoulders, sending beads of water sprawling from his tightly spun frame.

Dayne tired not to roll her eyes. Great, wonderful. Was exhasperation an emotion, because if it was she was having no trouble feeling it, and that was a good thing she supposed. Glacing up at the now obvious loomer, Dayne braced herself. She really did not enjoy rambling.

"Sathyre Merekki, if you please. Or if you don't please. My name won't change because of such trivial reasons. I don't see how introducing my humble self is your business, Numberette, but I suppose you can do whatever you want."

And there it was. A bunch of nonsense that wasted words. Why couldn't people just speak directly about what they wanted, like computers? The frown creased her usually blank face and Dayne shook her head. "You need to learn to speak again," she said flatly, looking up from under straight brows. "Or don't talk at all."

"Seems we've arrived at an impasse loves. We stand at the edge of a beautifully cool lake on this steamy day, and I'm the only one dressed -down- for a swim."

Looking down at her sopping outfit, Dayne wrinkled her nose and shook her head. "One swim is my limit," she quipped and again smiled at the rainbow haired boy. "And I can't swim well. You may have noticed. but now, I need dry clothes and to not have to talk to people who speak in circles."

Sorry Sathyre, but to someone who was used to speaking in code, you may as well have been speaking Greek. Dayne streched, winced at the rub of wet deniem, and pulled out her Aeon. "If you ever need IT help I owe you one," she told her rescuer, before mentally punching in the coordinates of her room and flickering out of view.

(Dayne out!)

"You're right, I can do whatever I want," the girl told the looming blue-haired elf, smirking smugly. Apparently one of the two wasn't too enamoured with rambling people, though. She just blinked, scratched her cheek and shrugged as the teleporting girl disappeared.

Oh well, there went the one thing she was actually mildly entertained by during this short string of events. Too bad. She briefly wondered why every single lady (or "lady") she had met so far was a socially awkward loser. Not that, truth be told, she could claim the opposite about herself!

Birds of a feather, she thought to herself, snickering quietly.

"Swimming? Sorry, man, but you're on your own, there. If you had a big rack to go with that sweet talking mouth, I might be interested, but as it is, you're out of luck," Mirael replied, gesturing widely with her arms and sighing as if in deep despair. Then, shifting gears, she turned towards the taller girl and smirked slyly up at her.

"A~nd what about you, Merekki? Fancy getting yourself...a little bit wet?"

... she groans at Mirael's words, chuckling afterwards. Honestly, THAT was lame even for her. She paid no heed to the one who didn't like rambling - outwardly, at least. Inwardly Sathyre was kind of... well, she was hurt, a bit. She was always a pretty sensitive critter, and that's why she needed to keep herself calm.

So she did, gazing at the surroundings instead of the people.

"I'm not good at swimming. Apologies. And I doubt you'd want to see what's under my clothes, at any rate. It's a secret. Not really, but I'd like at least something to remain a bit mysterious about myself." She shakes her head. "I mean, crossdressers aren't meant to be obvious, right?---oops, I just told you all."

Whoopsie. Not that she actually seems or sounds like she cares. Everything's a big joke to her.

Sathyre scratched one of her facial scars, idly.

"One swim is my limit,"

Ouch, sharp tongue on this one. Darrien had barely a moment to process the thought before:

"If you ever need IT help I owe you one,"

"Think I'll-"

*poof, no more Dayne*

"stand here with my mouth gaping for a minute." That might have been a bit embarrassing for the charmer, but if it was he didn't show it.

"Swimming? Sorry, man, but you're on your own, there. If you had a big rack to go with that sweet talking mouth, I might be interested, but as it is, you're out of luck,"

"That's two" he muttered lightly, glancing then from the numeric girl to the taller one, face blank of any emotion or expectation.

"I'm not good at swimming. Apologies. And I doubt you'd want to see what's under my clothes, at any rate. It's a secret. Not really, but I'd like at least something to remain a bit mysterious about myself."

"I mean, crossdressers aren't meant to be obvious, right?---oops, I just told you all."

"Aaaaaand that makes three, even Mickey Mantle struck out once in a while." he spoke, a little louder. Glancing from the pair back to the inviting surface of the water, raising his shoulders slightly in a shrug. "You'll have to pardon my elicit rudeness, but I'd hate to waste the day, storm clouds gather as we speak, and I'd hate to miss the chance for a swim." With that, he turned back toward the water, stretching his arms across his chest.

"Not offended, just glad you got the hint," she told the rainbow boy before turning towards the elf again, giving her another once-over and raising an eyebrow.

"I already knew that, Merekki. Do you have a bad memory or something?"

The girl frowned, fixing her glasses once again and staring at the elf. "...I must be crazy, but do you have any money? We should go get ice cream and ruin our health horribly or something, and I dunno if I have enough money and will to buy for two. Yeah, I feel like ruining my health, today. Maybe laughing at stupid people while at it."

Mirael nodded decisively, tapping her foot against the sand while waiting for the answer. Why did she ask the elf? Why not. Merekki was the only person she both kind of knew and was easily accessible, here. ...And as much as she would deny it, the horribly tall blue-haired elf kind of reminded her of home.

So she was a teeny tiny bit homesick. So what.

"Money, eh... let's check when we're at the right place. I'm a bit too lazy to try to remember anything right now. Except my name. And you being Numberette. And names in general." Whistling.

So the glasses-girl wanted to hang out with the rambler? That was an unexpected development, but not an unpleasant one. Hopefully, it wasn't to make fun of her. Although, she could deal with things like those! She made fun of herself on regular basis, either way.

"Walking, or?" Storm clouds weren't a good sign for most, but Sathyre liked rain. Sort of. Oh--right. Turning to the guy, and waving. "Have a nice swim!"

And now she can freely concentrate her attention on Mirael-Numberette.
