“Marybojangles, I’m expecting a student to come to my office, so let him through, kay?”

The one with the worst luck pinched the straw between her fingers, the one to send a message via the Aeon to the unfortunate student. The entire ordeal began a few months ago and culminated to this moment - and Mai had to be the one to break the news. Had it really meant to come to this? Or has it been an unfortunate side effect? No matter the answer, this had to be done by someone who had good rapport and the gentlest way to break the news. As much as she had not wanted to, Mai had to call the boy in. The grumpy matron on the other end of the intercom made a grunt of acknowledgment, but otherwise nothing else. Rarely did she say much anyways.

Mai plops into her chair and spins it around a few times. Her office, in comparison to some of her colleagues, was bright and cheery. The window was constantly open to let the sunshine in, the sky blue paint scheme with puffs of clouds matched her airy nature, the shelves of yearbooks, counseling and otherwise positive books lined the shelves in no real order - she had never been one to remain organized for too long. Stacks of graded papers were on one side of the desk, half were still without a grade. Even surrounded with the most positive colors and light, Mai could not remain so happy.

Why do I have to be the one to always do this?

A bitter thought in the sunniness that would have to melt away. She had a duty to fulfill, under the orders of her dar~ling Erik Shalamar, to let the boy have notice. Oh, how unfair...

Lucas was relatively acustomed to being pulled in and out of teacher's offices by now. All of these fluxuated around the issue of Stella of course, first to be told of the whole situation and then the slightly warm scoldings of the nicer batch of staff for all failed attempts at contact with Stella since this whole thing started. The strange but strong feeling of worry that normally washed over a student called into the teacher's office was now pretty lost on him.

As he walked in, he explained briefly that he was there to see Mai Ada, and the woman at the desk simply coughed, groaned and used her cigarette to direct him in the right direction. He raised a hand to say there was no need, but she was already back to reading whatever magazine was cluthed in her hand. Mai's room was so cheery it was almost painful to walk into, but it was not his first time in the room.

"Ms Ada, you wanted to see me?" Lucas said as he sat. In his mind he tried to go over what could be the reason for being called in this time.

"Ms Ada, you wanted to see me?"

As soon as he enters, he would find Mai Ada's chair facing the window. It was unusual maybe, but only because Mai would usually greet her students with unabashed cheer. The cheerful history teacher may have caught her own change in behavior and spun the chair around, her greeting smile was a little more mild than usual. She waves her arm, beckoning him to have a seat at the single chair propped in front of her desk.

"Yes, my deary! Come on in!"

Oh, how she dreaded all this. It was times like these that she wished she had Amaya's strength or Lance's unfettered cool - but then she would not be able to connect as well, which means she would not be chosen, which means her darling Erik would entrust this deed to someone else. Well, she simply could not have that! Mai popped out of her odd inner monologue to build a way to address the situation to Lucas. Mai reaches behind one of the stacks of papers and hands out a candy dish filled with sweet caramels in jeweled wrapping.

"We have quite the matter to discuss. Treat?"

"We have quite the matter to discuss. Treat?"

"No, thank you." Lucas replied after a few moments. It was difficult to read the matter of the situation when dealing with Mai. She was far too happy and cheerful. Acting that way so much simply meant he could get no grasp on what was going on, but of course it would have to do with Stella. He hadn't done anything he wasn't supposed to outside of that situation.

In the few short moments of silence, Lucas thought back to one of the last times he had seen Mai. It was during that incredibly awful situation that was the death of a student, where Ken had taken Amber to the Nurse and he had been left with her and... him. It was difficult to tear himself from that memory, it was still something he couldn't help but think of from time to time.

"Uhh-" Lucas began again, at least talking could pull his mind, "-What's this about?"

Lucas politely refused the treat, but Mai took it upon herself to pick one. It’s wrapper shimmered bright green like a cut emerald held to the light. Many situations to take one’s self upon, but it was all for the greater good. The bespectacled teacher was never one to question her duties, her belief, but there were times such as this. Yes, she had convinced herself, this was necessary. Mai sighs softly and gently places the wrapped candy on her desk outside of the dish.

"Uhh-" The boy begins, "-What's this about?"

“You held up well considering last time we met, hm? I know that was difficult for you and I hate to push more onto you.” She addresses this first. Mai wasn’t a mind reader per say, but she was still rather intuitive when it came to her students. “None of this will be any easier to say to you, especially since this concerns Stella-chan.”

There it was, the name that hung heavy over the both of them. The whole arrangement had painful to the both of them without a doubt and it had spread whispers of both positive and negatives among the student body. But few knew better than they, better than the pair.

“She took the arrangement much harder than expected.” Mai says with a gentle, subdued voice. “As you may well know, Stella-chan stopped attending classes recently and well, there was much concern about her overall health and well being. So we had contacted with her guardian, Mark and well, came to conclusion that Stella should return home.”

Mai pauses, allowing the information to sink in.

“She withdrew from the school early yesterday morning. We did allow her the option for her to see you and let you know before her withdrawal, but she declined. It would be too painful to bear, was what she said.”

“You held up well considering last time we met, hm? I know that was difficult for you and I hate to push more onto you.”

At least she was considerate enough to mention it, though Lucas wasn't entirely sure if he wanted her to. It was an impossible thing to push from his mind forever. Every time he saw the teacher's that came to their aid his mind swiftly recalled the event in short bursts.

“None of this will be any easier to say to you, especially since this concerns Stella-chan.”

Lucas nodded his head once. "I assumed it would." As it always does.

She went on to explain how difficult the situation had been for Stella, which he already knew. The extent of it was something unclear to him; the only knowledge he had was the little he saw and what Amber would tell him. It was at a point where Lucas never saw her, inside of class or out. She seemed to disappear from existance completely. Perhaps it had been more painful to see Lucas dealing with it in his own way, redirecting thoughts instead of allowing the pressure to crush him.

“So we had contacted with her guardian, Mark and well, came to conclusion that Stella should return home.”

He went for an initial response, though he was not sure what it would be. Anything, he'd thought to himself, Say anything. Instead, the lack of words produced a generically stunned look on his face. "I-" He stopped, the simple word fading to nothing, so he tried again. "Where-" Still nothing.

“She withdrew from the school early yesterday morning. We did allow her the option for her to see you and let you know before her withdrawal, but she declined. It would be too painful to bear, was what she said.”

"Too painful..." Well, imagine that, that he had not rendered enough importance to be given the decency of a goodbye. Which meant what? Lucas knew little of her, in reality, and that lack of information included an address. Lucas had met Mark before, and on that single meeting he determined the man's skeptical view of their relationship would be a difficult one to change. "I don't- know what to say. Why didn't anyone ask me?" He supposed quickly that if one person didn't want to, it didn't matter what the other wanted.

"Alright." He concluded to himself, looking towards Mai finally. "Is... That everything?" Lucas asked, making a quick attempt at recomposure.

Poor Lucas, Mai thought wistfully. It had to be a blind-side for the boy, for the girl he had come to adore and protect suddenly gives up and returns home without saying goodbye. How she hated to do these kind of things, but Mai had a way with softening the hardest of hits.

"Alright." He says, more to himself than to her. “Is... That everything?"

The otherwise composed question dug deep enough. What would have been the better alternative? It would not have been any easier to say had it been any other way. A part of her wanted to reveal what needed to be, but...well, nothing was ever easy. This had to be done. Mai’s smile is a sympathetic one.

Yes, this is for the best.

“It seemed...Stella felt her course of actions were right. The way she spoke, it was a voice that wanted to bring you the least pain. Do know that.” Mai was not sure if Lucas would feel better or worse about it all with those words, but it was all she could do for him in this situation.

“I’m sorry dearie. I know this is quite a shock...” Mai pauses, the bespectacled history teacher glances around her desk. She reaches for one of the jeweled candies, a shimmering one of ruby red, cinnamon flavor and offered it to him.

“A candy for your thoughts?”

“It seemed...Stella felt her course of actions were right. The way she spoke, it was a voice that wanted to bring you the least pain. Do know that.”

Lucas took a deep breath; it was difficult to think with circling, unanswerable questions throwing themselves at his mind. Where was the difficulty in waiting? Why was he not worth the appropriate goodbye, even? Where did they stand now? It did not occure to him that where she stood no longer mattered anyway. "She does what she thinks is best." He said quetly; no fault, no direction.

“A candy for your thoughts?”

It was becoming increasingly difficult to sit still with the world now spinning so rapidly. And, in a moment of confused boldness, his voice jumped from his throat and an otherwise inappropriate question flew free, "Do you think it was right? Would you not grant someone in my position the decency of choice if you were her? It wasn't for my benefit, it was for hers." Lucas thought to himself, then, that it would be better to get out now for fear of losing a little more control.

"Is it alright if I leave?" He asked far too quickly.

Mai withdrew the candy calmly. Better that the boy spoke freely rather than keep the thoughts to himself, at least that was how she felt about it. So sudden was the initial arrangement, the change in rooms for Stella, and now her sudden departure - she couldn’t blame the boy for feeling the way he did, however it was not exactly what she hoped for. Mai bit her lip, conflicted on what to say or do to ease the situation. What she thought about the girl’s words were not hers to judge and there was little more she could say or do to make the situation less tense.

"Is it alright if I leave?" Lucas says with apparent urgency. Though she would feel guilt over the thought, Mai let out an mental sigh of relief while physically she gave him a wistful sort of smile. She very well wouldn't keep him here if he chose to leave.

Sorry, dearie, to drop another load of unpleasantness on you.

“Of course Lucas-kun.” She pauses. "If you need to talk further about it, my door is always open."

“Of course Lucas-kun. If you need to talk further about it, my door is always open."

"Thank you," Lucas replied, more relieved if anything else, though he wasn't exactly sure what he was supposed to do now. Essentially all his initial plans had been broken anyway, but of course that had all been easier said than done in the first place. And now that she was gone... As selfish as it sounded things should have been perfect, but he just felt worse. Guilty, even. "I'm sorry you had to be the one to tell me this." After all, in the second he tried to block everything ou, he thought of how difficult it would be to explain this whole thing to someone.

Nevertheless, he stood up without a thought and moved to leave in the same moment.

"Thank you."

Mai made little effort to hold him back and instead gives him a sympathetic half-smile. Maybe it was better that she leave him to his thoughts, to sort out his feelings from the sudden news. She left without a goodbye, returning home with loved ones to save herself from further despair

But it's wrong.

"I'm sorry you had to be the one to tell me this."

Her half-smile almost falters, the difficulty of keeping such a friendly facade was draining for once. A part of her wanted to call Lucas back, to tell him what needed to be said. It wasn't entirely what he was thinking, it was much more complicated!

But Lucas was already out the door before she could even indulge in the notion, leaving an echo of rationale taking the form of her darling Erik Shalamar's voice:

This is the best course of action now.

"Yeah..."

Mai says softly to the boy's departing words before resting her forehead on the cool desk. It never gets easier when it comes to the messenger's role, the bearer of bad news. Used to being so open with her students, it was just so difficult to relate certain things. Mai rose from her desk and shuffled to gaze out her window at the Quad.

And she wondered.
If Stella Midnight could be found soon and safe, would everything be all right? The faculty has had their hands full in searching for the girl, but it was as if she had been plucked from existence. They have not given up yet, but suspicions were high as to what may have happened...

Mai shook her head and began to play with her Aeon, messaging Amaya-chan and Kenny-kun first.

It is done. He's shocked and upset understandably. I don't feel any better about it...but it's for the best.
