What do you think of religions across the world; compare religion and religious ideals

i think that people should use religion to get whatever good they can out of it, and not push their religion on others.

Religion fulfills the purpose of creating a social structure. Some would say that the government is the one who does this, but in all actuality, the two institutions are the same. They both institute laws; they both collect taxes; they both dictate moral standards; they both create the infrastructure through which society operates. There is, in point of fact, no separation of church and state, because the church and the state perform the same function. Any state is a religion, and any religion is a state.

In any case, I believe that most people, religious or not, wish to maintain a social order, having experienced its comforts, but it is also clear to me that the old system of government is rapidly collapsing.

I suppose that the above statements aren't really what this forum is asking, which is: do you believe in God. In short, I believe in a God which is not a human form (a shifted Greek mythological character) but is rather some ultimate form of which all existences are shadows, and I do believe that subatomic phenomena are solid evidence that such an ultimate thing exists. As for the afterlife, I've seen neither any hard evidence for it, but also no objections, so although I believe that there is one, I won't claim to be any more right about it than anyone else.

To close: I'm a baha'i.

Well, the thing is that man will always find confort in saying: "It wasn't my fault, it was God's plan". I really believe that as long as mankind isn't ready to take full responsibility for their actions, there will always be a God on whom we can blame it all. Don't get me wrong, if you wanna believe go ahead, it's just that I don't buy it.

P.S: I never have anything against the concept of any religion, nor against those who follow it. However, I am against hypocrits who pretend to be following a religion(like most Greek christian clerics), as well as people who try to force their religion to other people.

P.S.2: The only thing about christianity that I hate is that Christians baptise their kids at an age in which they cannot decide for themselves whether they want to follow that religion or not.

Wheather you believe or not, contemplate.[redit][/redit]

Well. I do believe in GOD, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit,, Bible, etc...the teachings inside the Bible are amazing and is a real manual for a great life...but religion is man-stuff, Christ did not applied any religion or dogmas for us, or even tought us any similar...He only explained that LOVE one another as you love yourself and LOVE your GOD first and foremost...Well..religion is what really divide the World...I am not against people, but against what motive certain people...

Personally, I'm against organized religion on a moral basis. On a theological basis I'm atheist and I'll leave everyone else to it.

THe problem with that outlook is that people often assume I hate religion because it contradicts what I believe. Thats not true. What I don't like about religion isn't the overriding idea of belieiving in a god or an afterlife, but the fact that those beliefs have all been superceded somewhat by the use of religion as a tool to control people.

Some people liken religious books to a Moral scrapbook through the ages. Thats fine, these people have at least accepted that the bible is man made and as such has been modified altered and otherwise changed throughout history. The word of god it is not, at least not now if it ever was, having been written over hundreds of years and then changed to suit.

The problem comes with the idea these people have that all modifications to the bible were made in order to serve the greater good, rather than a personal agenda. Any christian can read deuteronomy and see how it advocates the killing of the unbeliever. Similar passages are present in almost all religious texts. This is the truth of the matter in that its not a great moral guide, its a guide to serving the wishes of a number of different people who have been in power since its inception. Its critical to see the difference but my insistence is that taking any book as a guide to your own morals is a fools errand. Besides, morality is subjective, bad to one person isn't bad to another. How can one book cover every eventuality or situation?

"Faith is often the boast of the man who is too lazy to investigate."
-- F.M. Knowles

"Since the early days, the church has thrown itself violently against every effort to liberate the body and mind of man. It has been, at all times and everywhere, the habitual and incorrigible defender of bad governments, bad laws, bad social theories, bad institutions. It was, for centuries, an apologist for slavery, as it was an apologist for the divine right of kings."
-- H.L. Mencken

I find religion to be something the world needed in its infancy, but clings onto still, even though we no longer need it. We are no longer the type to claim the wind as being magic, or an act of some deity.

i agree. i think that religion was a form of control that the smart people in the government used to control people. I think that ages and ages ago every religion had it's base in a certain person or group of people.

It might not have been on purpose, maybe those people actually believed what they were saying. But i think that every storm, drought, famine etc. was explained by: O people! The gods are angry!!! We must prepare the sacrifices!!! Fast tonight in honor of your faith!!!

There was a quote i read once (sorry don't remember what it exactly was or what it was from) but it kinda said
<don't trust anything that deprives yourself, because whenever you give up something, that means someone is taking it>

I'm against organized religion in principle. I think that there are too many evil and selfish people who make it their business to make money off innocent and well-meaning zealots. For a good portion of history, priests had more power and money then anyone except the king. And the Catholic church practically ruled Europe in the Middle Ages because the monarchs were afraid of excommunication (i hope that's the right word)!

So... I dunno. I think that if religion was completely pure and selfless, then who cares if it's true? It would be better to be a deluded and dying old person, convinced that their life will not end, but that they will live forever in paradise, then a dying atheist who knows this is the end of his rope, good-bye forever! I think it would be happier to die thinking of paradise. (sorry if this is too long)

To me, religion is many things. It is social bondage, something to belong to, but mostly in my life it's been a way for people to control others and make money. Religion in america has become sickly twisted out of proportion.

I'm fine with a religion untill it says it's the only correct one and tried to force itself upon others.
