Sakura Lane Ch.6 - Rumors

*tip tap* a sound was made as Maya looked down, where a paper football sat on her desk. Glancing over, she saw Michiru was giving her the eyes. "Really Michiru? A paper football? What are we in elementary school?" Maya thought to herself, as she opened the paper. There on the paper in big bold letters there was the phrase " WHERE THE HELL WERE YOU?"

With a small sigh, Maya just jotted down her reply: "Like I told the teacher, I was in the infirmary." She jotted down nonchalantly and tossed the paper back while resting her chin on the palm of her hand, whilst staring at the blackboard.

Michiru was not the only one wondering where Maya was. she had missed two full classes and walked in late on the third. It was now the last class of the day and the teacher was wondering why she was late, as she wasn't really a tardy student let alone truancy. Walking in with a stride as the teacher questioned her Maya coldly replied "Didn't feel good. Was in the infirmary." As she slid into her desk garnering the eye of the class.
Reading the reply Michiru didn't seem all that convinced. Puffing up her cheeks she scoffed and looked at the class board waiting for class to end so she can grill Maya medium well about the situation.

After class Maya stood up casually, grabbed her bag and strolled out of the classroom, counting down in her head '3...2...1....' "So Maya, are you going to tell me why you missed two classes?" Michiru qiestioned, glancing up at Maya through her glasses. "Gee mom, is the infirmary not good enough for you?" Maya replied sarcastically, growing slightly irritated by the persistent questioning of her whereabouts for the last couple of hours.

"Tsk Tsk tsk, my dear child, of course it is not good enough. When i, your best friend, comes out of the bathroom, wandering the halls looking for...did you not think I would assume to check the infirmary?" Michiru replied in her best detective voice. "By the way, you weren't in there in case you were wondering." Maya rolls her eyes in response, cursing under her breath about how much of a smart ass Michiru thinks she is when she's on the attack. Before she could open her mouth to reply, Michiru continued with her questioning. "it is also very suspicious that I haven't seen Shouske-kun all day either. Would you happen to know where he is? Hm?"

"I'm not his secretary. How the hell would I know?" Maya sneered, looking at her, knowing she would not stop until she got what she wanted." Know what, you're right? You wouldn't have the balls to go hang out with a boy during classes anyway." Michiru responded with a smile on her face, knowing full well that would push Maya's buttons. "Now hold on there!" Maya hastily replied, snapping her head toward Michiru. "What do you mean I won't have the balls to go hang out with a boy during classes? I could do it if I want to. I just can't" she responded with a slight sneer. Michiru's eyes popped open with realization. "Oh you're right. Not with the peanut gallery stalking around. They'd get suplexed into the ground before they even had a chance." Maya also let out a small laugh. "Yeah you're right about that one. They're really annoying. You think the convenience store sells pest spray to get them off my back?" "Nah, I don't think a simple spray bottle would work. You would need a hell of a lot more, and I don't think they'd have enough in stock" Michiru replied, still going along with the joke. "Yeah you got that right." Maya answered as they shared a laugh.

.

After a few short seconds of laughter, Michiru's face suddenly flat lined "But no seriously, where the hell were you?" Maya sighed, thinking she had successful taken Michiru off of her scent. But it seems like that was futile. Michiru's teeth were still firmly locked in place. After a small sigh, Maya leaned down to Michiru's ear to whisper, as anything that would be overheard at this point would be a pain in the ass later. "I think Shouske got into another fight. His leg was a little messed up. I just made sure he got home safe. That's all." "Hmmmmmm?" Michiru replied looking starry eyed over at Maya, half in shock that that happened, and half intrigued. A small sweat drop appeared on Maya's face as she knew she probably shook the beehive way too much at this point. With a slight smile Michiru continued to prod. "Really? That's all? You were gone two whole hours. Are you sure there was no shnookie wookie going on?" Michiru teased. "Do you want me to go upside your head?" Maya gave the flat reply, not willing to entertain her any longer.

"Fine fine, I believe you. I still don't know why it took two hours for that to happen, but I figured that it had to be something. You don't just walk off like that. So it was honestly good to see you were okay when you got back into class." Michiru said with a satisfied look on her face. As that conversation was finishing, in a nearby classroom: "Are you sure about this?" A shadowy figure spoke out amidst a large crowd of other shadowy figures. "I'm positive. I saw them outside a window right after break ended, as I was running late to class." The other stated. "This isn't good at all. Why weren't any of you that were on shift paying attention? This never should have happened." "Hey it's not my fault. She was waiting in the bathroom with Kusada. When we turned around that's when she must have walked off. We spent forever looking for her as well." "Well, we need to take care of this. No one should get near Maya-sama, as she is for all of us to enjoy. Not to be taken by one person." The other said with venom behind their words. "Agreed. Tomorrow?" "If he shows up?" "He better show up." "It's settled then."

The next day Yuuji makes his way casually up Sakura Lane, staring at the blossoms as usual halfway lost in thought. Yesterday still weighed on his mind, as he went over in his head potential reasons he would be targeted. He knows that being the new kid at school would warrant some hazing depending on the group, but this went far out of line. And for the school's number one problem student to be in the council after being called in for official business was even more worrying. With a sigh escaping his lips, Yuuji turned his attention back to the top side of the hill where the school was waiting. "I'll just deal with this later" Yuuji spoke under his breath. "Shouske-kun." A familiar voice rang out. He peered behind him to see three figures jogging toward him to catch up. Raising his voice a little Yuuji replied "well this isn't a crew I thought I'd see together." He was reffering to Junpei, the girl he met the other day (he believed her name was Aisaka), and the runner under One-Shot.

Slowing down and turning toward them, he already had an idea what this was about. Although he wasn't sure how they found out about the situation he was in. He figured that being called to the student council office and not coming back afterward was enough cause for concern. Tasaku was the first to speak up: "Yo man, are you okay? I tried to look for you yesterday...I mean I knew where you were after the announcement. I just..." he trails off, noticing Yuuji has a bandaid on his cheek.

Aisaka speaks up, though barely audible: "I'm glad you're okay at least." Amongst all this Junpei seemed kind of bewildered. He knew that Yuuji didn't come back from the student council room yesterday because he wasn't there to walk home with him. But they're making it seem like he got into more than just a visit to the council room. Seeing the looks on everyone's faces, Yuuji took a second and decided to speak. "I'm fine." He replied, not sure how much to reveal to everybody. From how the first two seemed to respond to him, they have more information about what could have happened than he would have first thought. But seeing as Tamara is an underling to One-Shot, it's completely plausible he knew exactly what was going on. And seeing how he trailed off, it seems to Yuuji that he hit the nail on the head. Junpei however, definitely didn't seem like he knew everything. But seeing as two heads are better than one, and Junpei is more of the intellectual type, they may be able to help him figure out what's going on. After a brief catchup session, omitting a lot of the fight details, and explaining that there were just a lot of delinquents in the student council room and getting out with just a few scrapes and bruises he brung the question to Tamara about what the real situation is.

Looking over at Tasaku briefly, he turned around and starting walking toward the school again. Playing it be ear and not expecting much because he seemed like one of the lowest of the group, Yuuji questioned: "Is there something going on between the student council and the delinquents?" "Probably. I'm not too sure to be honest with you. It always seemed weird with all that he does, One-Shot barely gets in trouble for anything. Any other student would easily suspended for even half the things he does." Tasaku said, explaining what little he does know.

Junpei furrowed his brow deep in thought about the potential connection between that incident when a loud voice broke through the silence. "There you are, Shouske." A student declared, pointing over at him as more students approached Yuuji and company. It was a sizeable crowd. Way more than the ten students he faced yesterday. An exasperated look appeared on Yuuji's face, hoping it wasn't a continuation of the previous event. As in his current condition, as there was no way he'd be able to handle everybody on his own. And he didnt' have a lot of confidnece in the other two boys in his group, let alone asking Aisaka to lend some assistance. "Can I help you?" Yuuji replied in a way that showed that he had very little patience for the current situation. "We have some questions to ask you." One of them replied. As another jumped in "depending on your answers, things might not end too well for you." Squinting, Yuuji tilted his head to the side as the current line of questioning threw him off a little bit. "This can't be about yesterday." Yuuji thought to himself." If they knew what was going on, they wouldn't have to ask me questions about what happened. And seeing as there's a good mix of females, it's improbable they're all delinquents."

"Depends on the question. If this is a waste of time, then I'm not interested." Yuuji responded. One of the boys stepped up, popping his jacket like he was a little important. A noticealbe little badge, moving with the fabric on his jacket. As if he was trying to direct their attention to it. "One of our members saw you walking home with Maya-sama yesterday. We're going to need you to explain yourself. How you would feel so bold as to even get near her without an escort." He said commandingly. Mouth dropping half open, and an eyebrow raised, Yuuji was left flabbergasted at the sheer cringe worthy questioning he was presented with. Like a light bulb popping up in his mind, Yuuji hit his fist with his palm in the patented 'I got it' fashion. Almost instantly after connecting the dots Yuuji blotted out "Oh, so this is the famous peanut gallery I've heard about. Holy hell. I heard it was serious, but for your group to find and grill me about this before classes even started was a little more than I imagined. You sheople really don't have shit else to with your lives, huh? Is your homework done properly?" Yuuji scoffed, clearly making fun of the situation. Maya did tell him about the peanut gallery that followed her around and chased people away, but this was a little ridiculous.

The student with the badge barked at Yuuji in response. "What fucking nerve you have." The student spat out, clearly riled up from Yuuji's provocations. It's not only him, as the entire crowd of students is clearly agitated at this point. A lot of murmuring amongst them. A few good dirty words sprinkled in between. At this point Yuuji realizes he probably shouldn't provoke them, but he couldn't resist this opportunity. The clamoring amongst the crowd gets louder as the lead student continues. "You don't understand the situation that you're in. You better learn to cooperate, or else!" "Or else what?" Yuuji replied coldly, taking a few steps forward towards the group. This leaves a few of them taken aback, seeing how confident he was stepping up to such a large group of students clearly against him. "I'm sure all of you have heard of what happened to the big bully of the school not too long ago. I can guarantee I can beat most of your asses before I even go down." Yuuji stated matter of factly. His expression of bewilderment turning to one of agitation. I do kind of hope this is enough to make them back down. "With my leg the way it is, I really don't want to get into another pointless fight. What is it with this school, anyway?" Yuuji thought to himself.

A few male students stepped up beside the lead student with the badge, restoring some of his moxie, causing him to step towards Yuuji. As soon as he opened his mouth, another voice shot out, interrupting the scene that by now had a few curious bystanders. "What the hell is going on here?" the voice stated. As everyone turned toward the voice, they found Maya standing hand on her hip looking clearly annoyed. Unlike Yuuji, Maya instantly recognized the group of students and knew exactly what was going on.

"Oh. Maya-sama, we were just-" "Don't give me that bullshit." Maya snapped, cutting him off. "It looked to me like you were ganging up on somebody. Again." "N-no. We were just-" the lead student tried to explain in vain, once again being cut off. "Shut up. You guys always do this. Someone tries and come to talk to me, and you guys always chase them away like you're my fucking parents or something. I don't know why you guys thought you had the authority or right to dictate who hangs out around me, but this is the last straw. I'm done tolerating you sick little freaks intruding on my personal life, and just flat out annoying the hell out of me. I'm done with this shit. All of you need to leave now. If any of you approach me again, I'm calling the police. This is ridiculous. You all need to grow up, and get a fucking life." Maya seethed, walking up and standing next to Yuuji. At this point it's not even about Yuuji. Maya thought, reasoning with herself to justify her actions. And she was mostly right. She joked about it with Michiru yesterday, but it was becoming clear that they were nothing but a pain in their side being stalked every morning, and watched throughout school every day. She's surprised she didn't step up and chew their asses out sooner.

The students stood there, at a loss for words. They were unsure of what just happened. Some unable to comprehend what they just heard. Others looking down at the ground. The rest with looks of pure disbelief. After a small silence, one of the somewhat larger boys stepped out from the crowd, gritting his teeth so hard you could almost hear it. "I knew this shit would happen. You went and tainted our beautiful Maya with your filthy presence." He said, his anger getting the best of him. Confident in his strength, being in the soccer club he sprints out towards Yuuji, pulling his fist back to teach him a lesson. Almost rolling his eyes, Yuuji sighed. "Well aren't you full of openings?" He muttered under his breath. Gritting his teeth as he stood on his bad leg. With his hands still in his pocket, he lifted his right leg, cocked it back, and gave the student the hardest Trojan kick he could that reminded Maya of the movie "200". Michiru, who was an onlooker for the vast majority of the situation, puckered her lips trying to hold in the hardest laugh she'd felt all week. The student flew back a small distance, arms and legs outstretched in front of him, as he hit the ground ass first and rolled backwards a couple of times.

Scoffing, Yuuji replied bluntly "This is what she's talking about. You guys put her on this high horse as this thing that can't be obtained, when she's just a normal high school girl. You guys all need to pull your heads out of your asses, and focus on your own life. You have nothing to do with hers. She clearly doesn't want you to be a part of it." The students, now shaking from Maya's words and Yuuji's clear display of force; They picked up their fallen comrade, and trudged away. Unsure of what to do at this point.

Scratching his head, Yuuji sighed and turned to look at Maya. "I uh...don't want to be the elephant in the room. But it seems like the peanut gallery's been taken care of." Maya blinked a few times, and shot a side glance at Yuuji. "Oh my god, that was terrible. Did you really just make a pun?" She questioned, giving a small 'heh' from her lips. "No? Yeah didn't think so." Yuuji replied, trying to alleviate the obvious awkwardness of the situation. "I told you I'd come to school, didn't I?" Yuuji said, continuing the trend of playing off the situation. This caused Maya to grin in response. "So you did." She replied. "That's great. How's your leg?" "Uh...wrapped up. Still stings a little. But good enough to still give somebody a kick to the chest." With that response, Michiru's held in laughter exploded. Laughing out loud, holding her stomach as she vividly remembered the scene in her head. "Oh man, you kicked him so hard I thought he was going to fly out of his clothes. I'm pretty sure at least a shoe came off." She said. Getting the rest of her giggles as she wiped a tear from her eye, making Maya chuckle under her breath as well. "Well, I really appreciate you helping me get them off my back. It really was about time they got their nose out of my business." Maya said with a stretch.

The bell suddently rang, resounding throughout the schoolyard. The scene that seemingly last forever, happened in only ten minutes before school started. The bell brought the small group back to reality of the impending school day. Hearing this, Maya started walking towards the school. "I'll see you in class." She said, with a very small wave. Yuuji shrugged his shoulders a little, and followed in suit to go to his classroom. "I'll talk to you guys about it later." He said looking back. The three still in shock about what just happened, unable to say anything the entire time.

As everyone walked away, Ikuto Taiyama stood off the side behind a tree, squinting menacingly at the scene. With a sinister smirk appearing on his lips, he stepped out on the other side of the school where his own classes were being held. Clearly something on his mind of ill intent.
