ALEX SHOULDVE SAID HE WAS HURT SINCE THE BEGINING, NOW THAT HE IS SUCKING WHETHER INJURED OR NOT IS PUSSY SHIT, HE WAS THE ONE SAYING HE WAS GONNA GO IN THE GIANTS GAME BLA BLA AND NOW HE SAYS HES ALWATS HAD PAIN. . WHAT A COINCIDENCE HE SAYS IT AFTER HAVING 17 YARDS PASSING IN 2 QTRS. WHAT A LITTLE BITCH. HERES THE INTERVIEW.

Niners coach Mike Nolan spoke to the media at 11:45 a.m., at which point he said Alex Smith would sit out today's practice with a sore forearm but that he was expected to be back in the starting lineup Sunday against the Rams. Then, Smith admitted for the first time publicly that he has been playing injured. After practice, Nolan said that was news to him.

* * *

"I think that it would be a good idea if he said that to me before he said that (to the media)," Nolan said about Smith's comments that there is lingering discomfort in his shoulder and forearm.

"I know this, everybody's sore. I'm sore . . . has that affected my performance? Maybe, but I'm not going to talk about it. There are a lot other guys who are sore. I'm sure Derek Smith's eyes are sore. All right?"

Q: But isn't it different that we're talking about a quarterback's shoulder?

Nolan: "There is a medical staff with him all the time. All he has to do - all any player has to do - is say, 'This is my issue.' That works. That works. In games, when the doctor says he's OK and the guy says he doesn't want to come out, that's their choice. If the doc says no, there's no discussion. So the decision on that is really out of my hands. All I can do is pull a guy if he's not performing at the level I expect him to do. Then that's my area. But if the medical staff gives me the information that somebody is OK, I'm just following up on that. That's what I go off of. If I was the doctor, I could give you more."

Q: Did Alex tell you his shoulder and forearm have been bothering him?

Nolan: "To the point that it affected his play? After I spoke with you guys today, yeah, he said something about it. . . . But that's the first he's said that to me."

Q: But wasn't it obvious something was wrong with him?

Nolan: "It was obvious he wasn't playing well the other night. A couple weeks ago there were two or three balls (poorly thrown). Two or three is different. The other night it was 10 or 12 balls that didn't look like it. So that made sense. I spoke with him to get first-hand information. But that was after I spoke with you guys at 11:45 (a.m.). But, again, until I'm told that . . . I've said to Fergy (team athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson), 'Is there something wrong here?' . . . Again, from a medical staff standpoint when we say we're fine and all . . . when a guy says he's sore, that's normal. Some of that soreness comes and goes. But, again, that's what you go off of."

Q: Do you still expect Alex to start Sunday?

Nolan: "Right now, I'd say I hope so. We'll see. He went to see the doctor. He'll come out tomorrow and he's supposed be out here, and hopefully that's what happens. But I'm going to get an honest answer."

Q: Do you think you and Alex have an issue here?

Nolan: "I spoke with him right after practice, and maybe I need to speak with him again because of these things being said. In fact, I'll go see him now. The communication lines, you know, aren't as good as I thought. And we'll see what that's about. Please don't assume too much, but then again what makes a good story is you have to assume . . . . And we'll have to see where that's coming from
