This is from "The Music Issue" of "Nashville Lifestyles" part of The Tennessean:

The Music Issue

By Paul V. Griffith • December 1, 2008

Nashville is known as the Country Music Capital of the World. While it’s true that country artists of all stripes––traditional, pop, bluegrass, outlaw and international––look to Music City’s studios for credibility and state-of-the-art sound, the truth is that Nashville isn’t just a country music capital, it’s a recording capital. And in 2008, more than ever, a dizzying array of artists are calling Middle Tennessee home.

What follows is a review of Nashville artists that made an impact in 2008, with an eye toward ones who we think are going to experience continued success in 2009. By no means comprehensive—to meet that standard, it would be easier to just edit the Nashville area phone book—it includes Americana, traditional, country, pop and rock acts, and demonstrates the diversity of Nashville’s constantly evolving music scene.

...........

Each year we choose six artists to feature above all others in our annual Music Issue—the singers, songwriters or bands that we think define the local music scene right now and will continue to do so in the coming year. We look at all genres, we consider up-and-comers as well as living legends, we leave no rock (or roll, or country or soul) unturned.

Lee Ann Womack:

When Texas native Lee Ann Womack released her self-titled first album in 1997, she sported a neo-traditional country sound at a time when Nashville’s female vocalists had made a seismic shift toward a more pop vibe. Since then, she’s released six more albums, including the massive crossover hit 'I Hope You Dance' in 2000. 2005’s There’s More Where That Came From brought her a CMA Album of the Year award. Now there’s Call Me Crazy, featuring guest vocalists like George Strait, Keith Urban and her daughter Aubrie, an album that’s been hailed by critics as Womack’s deepest and richest work to date, with a wealth of classic country music themes, chief among them drinkin’ and fallin’ in love. “Out of all the records I’ve done—and I’ve done a lot—this is gonna be one of my proudest moments,” says Womack’s producer, the legendary Tony Brown. Womack proves some styles never grow old.
