Lee Ann has a new single out! I totally had no idea about this, but it was posted on another board. It's called "Last Call". You can listen to the entire song here:
All Access link

(or through Real Player here, if that doesn't work:
AAC link )

PURCHASE SONG THROUGH iTUNES HERE!

And here are the lyrics (thanks to dudley). "Last Call" was written by Erin Enderlin and Shane McAnally and is the first single from Lee Ann's next upcoming album, Call Me Crazy, which was released October 21, 2008. More info in this thread.

-----------------------------

I recognized your number,
It's burned into my brain,
Felt my heart beating faster,
Every time it rang.
Some things never change,
That's why I didn't answer.

I bet you're in a bar,
Listening to a country song.
Glass of Johnnie Walker Red,
With no one to take you home.
They're probably closing down,
Saying, "No more alcohol."
I bet you're in a bar
'Cause I'm always your last call.

I don't need to check that message.
I know what it says.
"Baby, I still love you,"
Don't mean nothing when there's whiskey on your breath.
That's the only love I get.
So if you're calling...

I bet you're in a bar
Listening to a cheatin' song
Glass of Johnnie Walker Red
With no one to take you home
They're probably closing down
Saying, "No more alcohol"
I bet you're in bar,
'Cause I'm always your last-

Call me crazy but
I think maybe
We've had our last call.

I bet you're in a bar.
It's always the same old song.
That Johnnie Walker Red,
By now it's almost gone.
But baby, I won't be there
To catch you when you fall.
I bet you're in bar
'Cause I'm always your last call

Hey, check out Kevin @ Country Universe's new review of the song:

Quote:

One of Lee Ann Womack’s greatest strengths as an artist is picking adult material that resonates with both traditional and alternative country music fans. Her new single, “Last Call”, is reminiscent of her now-classic hit “I May Hate Myself in the Morning”, but the woman in this song is making the opposite choice when that phone rings after too many drinks. “I bet you’re in a bar”, she thinks as she doesn’t pick up the phone, “’cause I’m always your last call.”

The second verse is particularly biting, as she notes that “I don’t need to check that message, I know what is says. ‘Baby I still love you’ don’t mean nothing when there’s whiskey on your breath.” Womack follows with her sad observation, “That’s the only love I get.”

To call this “real” country music is cheating a bit. There have always been more throwaway songs on the radio than truly great ones, just like there have always been more singers and entertainers than there have been artists. Lee Ann Womack is an artist, and country music is that much better because of it.

Grade: A

Thanks, CF. I hope it goes far, but I think it wise not to hold our breath. Sorry for being so cynical about country radio.

I would love Top 10...but I'd settle for Top 20 if that means for sure an album would be released. If it doesn't work out, I hope Lee Ann moves to an independent label.

Listen here: Last Call

I read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and I think, "Well, that's not going to happen."

Sorry about that...I didn't even look under "TV & Radio." I'm loving this song. I wonder how many songs they changed from what the original release was supposed to be. IMO, they could lose Your Love Put A Song....to me that just sounds like 70's cheesy country. I wonder if Finding My Way... will still be on the new CD, if it is will be scratched since it didn't do well.

That's ok! I totally agree with you. I did not care at all for that song (Your Love Song... or whatever it's called) and cannot believe LAW would record that. I tried to like it but I just couldn't. I hope they put FMWBH on the new cd but if they don't, I'm good, because I already own the song from iTunes, and it probably means more music (at least one more song) would be put in its place :)

I must say that I wasn't very enthusiastic about this song at first. It took me a number of times to really get into it. Now I love it.

I don't know if its one of my favorites yet. Maybe after a while.

Then again, I didn't even like "Talk To Me" the first few times I listened to it. Now it's my favorite song from the LAW. :D

yeah, I'm not crazy crazy over it, but I still really like it. I'm glad that it seems that a lot of people are loving it so I hope that translates to radio!

Here's a new review from The 9513:

Lee Ann Womack - “Last Call”

Brady Vercher | June 18th, 2008

Lee Ann Womack Lee Ann Womack’s latest single, “Last Call,” about the conflict a woman goes through when ending an unfulfilling relationship is a good song, although it does suffer from a few problems. The production of the verses give the song a haunting feeling that sets it up for an internal conflict, but the switch up and the cadence in the chorus changes the mood of the song altogether.

Indeed, the internal conflict isn’t as strong as in another of Womack’s songs, “I May Hate Myself In The Morning,” nor are the resulting consequences as potentially dire, which doesn’t allow the listener to become as emotionally invested in her choice. Where emotions win in the spur-of-the-moment choice in “I May Hate Myself,” logic wins out in “Last Call” and the decision to not answer the phone seems to have been made sometime in the past, so the internal struggle isn’t as strong. “Last Call” could indeed be a follow-up to the same relationship presented in “I May Hate Myself In The Morning.”

Another problem arises with the three different meanings of the title phrase, “last call,” throughout the song. It is clever, but also feels forced in the second instance and detracts from the song.

Although the lyric doesn’t accentuate the emotional conflict, Womack’s vocal drips with indecision as she delivers a splendid performance; she understands that her goal is to tell a story through the song and convey emotion that may or may not be present in the lyric rather than to just sing at us. It’s not her strongest song, but it’s well written with a good performance, and despite the dull internal conflict, it’s rife with emotional depth.

Thumbs Up

Last Call
MCA

Lee Ann back with a great new Country single entitled, 'Last Call.' Having been a big fan since I saw her blow everyone away on the New Faces Show years ago when she was on Decca, I am a sucker for just about anything she puts out. As far as pure Country voices go, she's right there with Dolly Parton and Alison Krauss, so in my opinion her music always shines brightest when it's produced in a more understated fashion- 'Last Call,' is tastefully produced, letting her beautiful vocals shine through and it's a great Country single. Impacting now.

From Jennifer Webb:
Lee Ann Womack - "Last Call"

Seems like it's been forever since new Lee Ann Womack material was released, so imagine my surprise when I heard about "Last Call." Her previous album was fantastic and if this single is any indication, there's more greatness on its way. There's a simplicity about the production and it really suits Lee Ann's beautiful voice.

I'm getting really excited about this now. I agree about the Your Love Put A Song, but disagree about Finding My Way Back Home. I think the label pulled support for that one way too early based on what they thought should happen with the album. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. That's the reason it didn't do as well, IMO.
