I got this idea after I was listening to the Americana Music Choice channel here on tv and I heard another version of "Blame It On Me" (Beth Garner's), which is on LAW's Something Worth Leaving Behind album, and it sounded so different but it was interesting...so a few nights ago, I looked up other versions and had to post them here for all the LAW fans to hear and compare ...(I'll try to do one with George too). FYI: On some songs, there were so many versions, I just picked only a few of them. And some of the album date years I put on them may not be totally accurate to when the song was released because I listed the greatest hits release date year. There is several people I have never heard of, and some I have, but they're all worth a listen so you can hear the differences. About all the sound clips are from AllMusicGuide and play in Windows Media Player. Just click the song title and you can hear a clip of that version. All songs listed chronologically (by date of when LAW's albums were released, and then in the correct songlist order): "Never Again, Again" by Lee Ann from the 1997 Lee Ann Womack album. Yw ... I'm glad that you enjoyed it!I can say that overall, for the most part, I prefer Lee Ann's versions of them all.

Thanks again, CF. This is really cool.
I just got through listening to all the clips. Of the ones I hadn't heard before, most of them are pretty good. "Never Again, Again" by Texana--Not bad, doesn't really add much though. "Some Things I Know" by Billy Gilman--I've never been able to get into Billy's music at all. I would think that someone as greatly influenced by Pam Tillis as Billy Gilman is, I would like him a lot more. "A Little Past Little Rock" by Cliff Waldron--Cliff turned "A Little Past Little Rock" into a great bluegrass tune. I wonder if he's related to LAW's guitar player, Wally (Mike Waldron). Probably not. "I'd Rather Have What We Had" by Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn-- "I'd Rather Have What We Had" by George Jones--I must say that I like both of these versions better than Lee Ann's (it's still great though). Loretta and Conway are magical together, probably the best country duet partners of all-time. George Jones is...well, George Jones. "Don't Tell Me" by Buddy Miller--There isn't much difference between the two versions. I like Lee Ann's much better because of the vocals. "If You're Ever Down In Dallas" by Johnny Lee--I like this one a lot. It's great to see a song that Lee Ann co-wrote being covered by a legend like Johnny Lee. There is a song on 13th of July that is called LeeAnna. That's pretty cool, and a good song. "Heart To Heart Talk" by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys--Bob's is a flat-out classic! Lee Ann's version is great, can't say that it's Bob Wills great though. "The Healing Kind" by Ronnie Bowman-- "The Healing Kind" by Dan Seals--I kinda have the same feeling about both versions of "The Healing Kind" as I do about Lee Ann's. I like Ronnie's version better than Dan's, because I like his vocals much better. "I Hope You Dance" by Ronan Keating-- "I Hope You Dance" by Oleta Adams-- "I Hope You Dance" by Steven Ivey-- "I Hope You Dance" by Cahal Dunne-- I don't care for any of these, for obvious reasons. I guess Ronan's is the better one. He did a fantastic duet with LeAnn Rimes--"The Last Thing On My Mind". "I Know Why the River Runs" by Julie Miller--Julie's version has so much edge to it. This one's a toss-up over which version I like better. "Why They Call It Falling" by Roxie Dean--I'm kinda surprised by this one. There's something about her voice that adds a lot to it. "Ashes By Now" by Rodney Crowell--It's okay. Great piano. It's cool that is has the other verse. It's definitely different from Lee Ann's. "Thinkin' With My Heart Again" by Ty Herndon--It's good. A lot of what Ty sings is good. It's nice to hear it from a male perspective. "Lonely Too" by Bruce Robison-- "Blame It On Me" by Bruce Robison--This guy is GREAT!! If you haven't checked him out yet, do it. His wife, Kelly Willis, is just as good. Lee Ann fought hard to get "Blame It On Me" released on the radio, but thanks to the label it didn't happen."Does My Ring Burn Your Finger?" by Buddy Miller-- "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger?" by Solomon Burke--I love Buddy's version. I think his voice is more suited for this (of course, he wrote it), but Lee Ann certainly made it her own (fiddle part adds a lot, too). The label didn't have a problem with putting this on the radio (good move for once). Solomon Burke's: WHAT...WAS...THAT?!? "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" by Don Williams-- "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good" by Anne Murray--I like Don's version but Lee Ann's is much better. I don't care for Anne's version at all. The music doesn't go well, and she slowed it down too much. "Orphan Train" by Julie Miller-- "I Need You" by Julie Miller--"I Need You" is great. Lee Ann didn't try to change much with her version, which is probably best. "Orphan Train" is just awful. The harmony vocals by Victoria Williams make it worse. "Blame It On Me" by Beth Garner-- "Blame It On Me" by Aaron Watson--Beth's is really cool. Very strong rock-and-roll take on a soon-to-be classic (well, it should be). Aaron's is good. He doesn't really add anything though. "She's Got You" by Patsy Cline-- "She's Got You" by Loretta Lynn-- "She's Got You" by Jimmy Buffet-- "She's Got You" by LeAnn Rimes--Patsy's "She's Got You" is CLASSIC. Lee Ann's has a quite different sound to it. LeAnn Rimes' sounds a lot closer to Patsy's. Both of those are great too. I think I prefer Loretta singing her own classics and not the classics of others. Jimmy Buffet,...no thanks. "I'll Never Be Free" by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Jordan--Both version are great in the own right, but totally different. Ella Fitzgerald is by far the greatest female voice ever in jazz. "Waiting For The Sun To Shine" by Ricky Skaggs-- "Waiting For the Sun To Shine" by Reba McEntire--Ricky's pretty good. Lee Ann's is much better, though. The mandolin adds so much to her version. Reba's on the other hand, WOW!! I love those aching vocals. If she'd done it with a mandolin (or maybe a regular piano) instead over the light drum beat, it would be really awesome! "Just Someone I Used To Know" by Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner-- "Someone I Used To Know" by George Jones & Tammy Wynette-- "Someone I Used To Know" by Patty Loveless & John Randall-- "Just Someone I Used To Know" by Rhonda Vincent--I like all these. The one from Dolly and Porter is the best, though. It was cool what Lee Ann had to say about recording it on TMWTCF (on iTunes Originals) "I'll Be Your Whiskey" by Joey Daniels--It sounds really good. She sounds quite a bit like Tammy Cochran to me. "You Don't Know Me" by Willie Nelson--I like just about everything from Willie, but he can't quite measure up to the ladies on this one. In his defense though, I've only heard Lee Ann's version live (so of course it's going to be better). This song's like "She's Got You" and "Heart To Heart Talk". No one will ever come close to the original. "Her" by Waylon Payne--Very strong song. There's too much drums though and I think it might be better with a piano instead. There's a lot of ache in Waylon's voice. No one does ache better than Lee Ann Womack, and her version has enough for about three songs. Then again, I've only heard her sing this live as well. "Down & Out" by The Randy Rogers Band--Great uptempo rocker. So much edge, and Lee Ann's has just as much edge. |

Wow: thanks so much for commenting on all the songs Ken: I enjoyed reading what you had to say ![]() I added some things: Reba's "Waiting For the Sun...", Solomon Burke's "Does My Ring...", the duet partner's name for Ella's version, a link to listen to LAW's version of "Just Someone..." on iTunes, and then I added some new version links at the end for the upcoming album .If there's any versions I left off that any of you guys want me to put on there, just post it, and I'll add it if possible (like for "You Don't Know Me", if you know of the best version/s of that, then I can add some more to it). Thanks! |

Thanks! So the music/instrumentals in Lee Ann's version of "Him" are less drum-based? Does her sound like traditional country or like traditional with some contemporary flavor? Also, I did look up the song, "Love Put A Song In My Heart", and I'm not sure if it's the same one I found or a new song. We shall see...

Hers is a lot more acoustic guitar-based. There seems to be more emphasis on the drums in Waylon's. I think hers is a mix of traditional and contemporary, while his is more contemporary. |

Just added Emmylou's version of "Ashes By Now". Was not aware of her version until maybe a week or so ago. I like it. And added "Love Put a Song In My Heart" on there as well. If I remember correctly, Lee Ann's version was cute but I hope she doesn't record it or put it on the album .
