Womack keeps it country
Fans have Loretta Lynn to thank for offering fellow singer some sage advice

You know you're real country when Loretta Lynn tells you so.

For Lee Ann Womack, a 39-year-old native of Jacksonville, Texas, it was a defining moment early in her career.

Womack was just starting out and her self-titled album in 1997 was a refreshing oddity. Shania Twain's gimmicky brand of exclamation-point pop dominated the country market while Womack, with songs like ''Never Again, Again'' and ''The Fool'', was a traditionalist.

Lynn was so taken with the newcomer she told her to stick to her guns and kindly keep it country. "She's so sweet, so funny," Womack says of Lynn.

It was sage advice. After an ill-advised flirtation with mainstream country-pop on the poorly received and aptly named 2002 CD, Something Worth Leaving Behind, the followup to her smash 2000 effort I Hope You Dance, Womack startled the industry with her decidedly retro fifth studio album, There's More Where That Came From.

With its gauzy cover photo recalling vintage '60s Tammy Wynette LPs and song titles such as ''I May Hate Myself in the Morning'', a poignant tale about a woman who turns to an ex for comfort even though she knows the relationship is doomed, and the descriptive ''Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago'', There's More Where That Came From has become the darling of the country cognoscenti.

Last November, Womack won the coveted album of the year award from the Country Music Association, as well as single of the year for the plaintive ''I May Hate Myself in the Morning''.

''Good News, Bad News'', a duet with fellow traditionalist George Strait, from his Somewhere Down in Texas CD, garnered Womack her third CMA award of the night.

Listening to Lynn clearly paid off.

"No, I didn't know it would win," Womack says. "I thought it would be cool and I knew the producer (Byron Gallimore) had friends in town and the label was behind it and all those things make a difference. I was hoping not only for myself but (also) for traditional country music in general."

Considering its low-key, out-of-the-mainstream currency, Womack encountered little opposition when she went into a Nashville studio to record it.

"When I started making the record, there was a whole different regime (at MCA Nashville) so I was flying under the radar. So much was going on nobody knew who was going to have a job next week so they were concerned about other things at the time."

Womack co-wrote ''Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago'', the title coming from a comment she had made in a passing conversation, but finding the other songs was a snap. Singers like Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill or Sara Evans generally don't seek out the hearty, traditionalist fare Womack prefers.

"There aren't a lot of people cutting those kinds of songs," Womack says. "I know what writers to go to. I had to fight over ''Stubborn''. Several different producers wanted it for their artists ... (who) listen for something they can run up the charts with quick. I listen for songs that mean something to me and might take a few listens."

Beyond awards shows, Womack, a mother of two school-age daughters, has been busy. Along with Norah Jones, she recorded a duet of the folk standard ''Where Have All the Flowers Gone'' for Dolly Parton's CD, Those Were the Days -- "I like to be around Dolly because she reminds me not to take myself too seriously.

"My older daughter is travelling with me and we get to hang out. After being on tour with Shooter (Jennings, who also plays the Big Valley stage today), she got to see you can be cool and into George Jones."

After 2005, she declared herself "physically and emotionally and mentally very worn out."

But don't count her out, she says. Womack believes performing her repertoire before country audiences helps her heal.

"The fans (bring) a new energy every time you step onstage and they sing along with you so you forget all about being tired. It's good. I've got to sing these songs for the rest of my life and that makes a difference."
