There goes one sassy little supermodel

She sure is cute, but you might not think of the diminutive Lee Ann Womack as a runway model.

In fact, neither does she. But Lee Ann is feeling really motivated about helping The Heart Truth/Red Dress Fashion show in New York, part of a campaign for the National Heart Lung Blood Institute.

So down the runway she goes tonight, along with some other celebs.

"There is good reason why I'm putting my short (butt) on a runway," she says.

"Both my grandmother and uncle died of heart disease. They were both very supportive of my career, my uncle being the only musician in the family and teaching me to play guitar and banjo as a little girl.

"Mammy, my grandmother, paid for me to move to Nashville and get in the music business program at Belmont, which was much too expensive for my family to afford. Unfortunately, especially in my uncle's case who died at a very early age, neither of them ever got to hear a record or see an awards show or many of the great things that have happened to me.

"Normally, as a 5'2" woman, I would NEVER agree to getting on a catwalk, treading on the sacred ground usually left only for supermodels. But hey, if it'll raise money, I'll do just about anything."

Stars Make Red a Hot Fashion Trend
2006-02-04 11:05:16

........Womack wore a strapless gown with gathering and satin strips on the bodice by Carmen Marc Valvo that fit her like a glove.

The country singer met Valvo during last season's Fashion Week, when she watched Valvo's show from backstage and then returned the favor by inviting him to see her perform.

When it came time to find a singer for the Red Dress Collection, Valvo said he knew Womack -- who also happens to love wearing red -- would be the one.

He went with a strapless dress to highlight her face and hair, he told The Associated Press Thursday as he showed Womack the gown for the first time. "Like designing for any celebrity, I had to ask myself, `Who is she? What's her persona? What will work for her?'"

Valvo also said he had to consider Womack's petite size -- very different from the leggy models who usually strut the runways.

"I knew it was going to be fabulous," Womack gushed. "It's definitely something I would wear."

Womack said she would have worn any color for a good cause but red is one of her favorites because it commands attention onstage.
