‘Redneck Woman’?‘I wear that title proudly’
By OTIS R. TAYLOR JR.Staff Writer

Gretchen Wilson is more than just a “Redneck Woman.” She’s a chameleon, too.

Hey, she said it.

Wilson — who headlines the Redneck Revolution Tour that stops at the Colonial Center (SC) tonight — has grabbed country and pop music by the horns, and she won’t let go.

We caught up with Wilson on her cell phone in a Jack in the Box parking lot and talked about love songs, shopping and her chameleon-like tendencies.

If you thought fame would change the “Redneck Woman,” you were wrong.

A lot of folks call you the “Redneck Woman.” Do you ever feel like you want to move beyond that song?

No, I don’t think so. I wear that title proudly. It’s not about being backwards. It’s about being proud and strong. It’s a song I have to sing for the rest of my life. It would be silly to think that the “Redneck Woman” is all I am.

You have a sassy, bad-girl style. Are you really bad or are you just a fiery singer?

I think I’m more “one of the guys” than most girls are. I’m very tomboyish. I hate shopping. I’d rather go watch football with the boys. I’m not a girlie-girl (but) I guess I can be.

Did that surprise you, winning the CMA female vocalist of the year?

I was completely floored. I was expecting to hear Lee Ann Womack’s name. What she’s been doing lately is awesome. It shocked me. I don’t think I could imagine winning the Horizon (award, for newcomers) one year and then female vocalist the next. I don’t think that’s ever been done before.
