![]() Lee Ann Womack – Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago Womack’s brand-new-you’re-retro album There’s More Where That Came From re-established one of country’s finest femme voices in a big way this year (including winning her CMA Awards for Album and Single of the year), and from first listen, there was no doubt as to the album’s standout cut. “Twenty Years” is a perfectly sung, beautifully string-soaked declaration of independence with not just one of the year’s best titles but also one of its best choruses: “Water under the bridge/I guess that’s all life really is.” Sometimes the simplest poetry is also the purest. Bravura in every way, this is the country single of 2005. [Thomas Inskeep] See rest of list here... ======================= That's so cool....the only country song on their list, and if you look at all the voters at the bottom, a lot of them list Lee Ann's "..Morning" and "Twenty Years..." on their lists

Isn't it weird that she's going back to the stuff she loves best, traditional country music, but getting lots of acknowledgement from the non-traditionalists? I think it's awesome but it does require a fine line to be walked by an artist. I mean, on the one hand you want to court the "I ain't nuthin' but true country music? Harrrrumph," while at the same time you pretty much need the sales from the non-traditionalists. I guess weird is not the right word but perhaps ironic is a better choice. I just think good music is good music and nothing's going to change that. I'm glad she's being true to herself. That's what counts, IMO. |

It's great she gets such great recognition for doing traditional stuff.....I hope she does not sway from this in the future b/c the majority of her fans (minus the IHYD song only fans) love her traditional country stuff and it works for her the best. Cannot wait to see what the next album will bring! |

I can't wait, either. IF there was any kind of market for the big band/torch song artist, then Lee Ann would be doing great there too. But, since there's not, I agree her best work is in traditional country. I just love how she does it and moved it back to being cool again. |

I know...but I don't think her voice on the big band stuff (like the C-mas album) is her complete voice; what I mean is that she made her voice really soft and less twangy (I prefer her very twangy accent in songs :P). I hate how people say that this new album was made BECAUSE the SWLB album was a 'dud'. I think it may have been a little on her mind, but I think she did it mainly b/c she loves this music she grew up listening to and knew it was who she was and what she should be doing, b/c I do believe she took a huge risk releasing "..Morning" b/c it's so traditional and it was not as popular then with women (wierd to say that 'then' refers to later 2004-early 2005). Only Gretchen and Sara could release something traditional or somewhat traditional and make it big. I'm glad she released "..Morning" though b/c so many people love it :). |
