Womack questions CMA pop crossover

NASHVILLE, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Country music superstar Lee Ann Womack says she's not sure what the Country Music Association is thinking with its pop culture crossover for its awards show.

The CMA Awards will be handed out Nov. 15 in New York instead of Nashville and Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi and "The Sopranos" star James Gandolfini are among the country outsiders scheduled to appear. Womack is nominated for six awards this year.

"I think it's kind of weird sometimes how some of the powers that be in the country music business think that's cool," Womack told Sunday's Nashville Tennessean. "That really boggles my mind. I'm not sure what they're thinking."

Nashville Universal Music Group chief Luke Lewis -- who is Womack's boss as well as a member of the CMA TV committee -- says the bottom line is ratings.

"I actually love that Lee Ann Womack has the nerve to say that," he told the newspaper. "Sounds like something I'd say.

"But I'm a record executive. If it'll make more people watch the show, I'm all for that."

Smartin271: Sorry, I don't get this. She's hosting a Broadway/Country crossover while in NY and she and Aubrie enjoy Pussycat Dolls. What gives? If her dad had her not listen to old country songs when he was p/t dj'ing would she have turned out different? How can you bash when you have no ground to stand on? Sorry, I really don't see this with her.

I don't really agree with her either on this (I did post this article, and then deleted it b/c it's such a strange statement :P). I do wish there was more country artists presenting/performing than the non ones, but I do think it helps ratings and it's not bad. I have noticed that Lee Ann has been making alot of statements recently that might upset some people lol..

Sorry, CF, I didn't know you posted then pulled it. I agree with you about the whole thing, though. It really upsets me she's been kinda bashing her own SWLB, too. I think that work is some really great stuff that just might have been poorly mismanaged. I refuse to believe that I don't have an ear for great music, either. And that's some great music. I wish she'd show some courage to defend it. This whole thing about the us vs. them is getting old too. Frankly, if Shania hadn't come along with her looks to get me in the door to Lee Ann Womack, then I never would have known who Lee Ann Womack was. Heck, George Strait for that matter too. I'm just tee'd off because I love all this stuff and they're bashing me, in essence, for the way I found them. I mean, DUH, "shut up and sing!" (to paraphrase her on politics, which I agree with her on).

In alot of LAW's recent statements, she has kinda put down today's country, which I kinda don't like and with the SWLB and some of the IHYD album, with her statements, I do find kinda wierd myself. I do love all of LAW's work, but I don't think the SWLB album ('cept for few of the songs) was really who she was. I think she's really been a country traditionalist most of her career, but I think her record company and maybe herself for a while, might have got caught up in the crossover success area. I do love the SWLB album alot and am glad she released it and wished it had done SO much better....but then again I prefer the really country side of LAW, so I'm kinda split-sided on the issue of real country/ today's "country".

I do also wished she showed a little more pride in the SWLB album too. And I also love Shania :D

Well, TMWTCF is by far my most favorite from her, traditional or not(which I've grown to love). But, had it not been for the crossovers, I never would have found the traditional. I just think some of these traditionalists who shoot their mouths off better learn how some of their fans came to find them in the first place, especially when they're hanging out with non-traditionalists anyway (Skooter, for instance). It just seems a little hipocritical if you ask me. ;)

Oh, I still love her too and she'll be my favorite for as long as I can see from her, plus we're all that way to some extent. I am not excluded but it's still good practice to recognize it and learn. :D

Do we know what Lee Ann is singing yet? Her new single?
I'd like to know! I'm thinking that George will be singing SLHG, but I guess we will see! Can't wait to see them both!

I think so, it's most likely...my wish is that they sing their own songs, and then sing their duet together :headphonedance:

Personally, I applaud LeeAnn for her openness and honesty. I think alot of ppl were thinking what she had the guts to say. JMHO.

actually, I do agree all the way with Lee Ann now. I had to think about it, but ratings I don't think are more important than keeping the awards about country music. I didn't really care to see the non-country people there, though it was cool, since they are legends and all, but I think Willie and Dolly could have performed their own songs alone or a duet with another country star (I wish Dolly woulda sang with Brad on his new song!)
