In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, President George Bush said in his remarks: "I understand a fellow Texan was here, Lee Ann Womack. I want to thank her for her entertainment. (Applause.) Proud to call her friend." Read the rest of his remarks here. I think that's really cool she did the entertainment and he called her a friend.

allright, more on this from the official site: Lee Ann and guitarist Jim Beavers went to perform there and this is what Jim says: Hello, everyone. This is Jim Beavers, acoustic guitar player. Lee Ann and I were honored to be invited to perform at a George Bush Rally in Pittsburgh, PA, on Saturday, July 31, 2004. Here’s how it went down. Lee Ann and I were escorted by a volunteer into the new Pittsburgh convention center at around 3:00 in the afternoon, an hour before we were set to perform. Upon our arrival, our vehicle and luggage were checked out by Secret Service agents and bomb-sniffing dogs. As you can imagine, security was very tight in anticipation of President Bush’s arrival which was scheduled for 5:45 pm. We found our way to the green room and quickly rehearsed some of the songs we wanted to play. NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver and former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann was introducing the President and he was in the green room as well. We all hung out for a while and he is truly a kind and interesting man. It took me a while to warm up to him because I grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan and Swann helped the Steelers beat us several times back in the 70’s. We hit the stage at around 3:00 and kicked it off with “A Little Past Little Rock,” which we thought was kind of funny considering where Bill Clinton is from. About the time we got to the second verse, though, a section of the crowd to our right started screaming at us. We couldn’t understand what they were yelling so we stopped the song. Someone in the crowd had apparently fainted so we asked if there was a doctor in the house and waited while the person was attended to. We never learned what happened. We didn’t finish “Little Rock,” but kicked into “Living in the Promiseland” which is a song that Willie Nelson had sung at the Democratic Convention just a couple of nights earlier. The crowd seemed to really enjoy it and Lee Ann sounded great. We concluded that first set with “Something Worth Leaving Behind,” which was appropriate for a political rally AND just happens to have been written by my brother, Brett. We went back to the green room and hung out while other politicians were making speeches. The President had not yet arrived, but you could tell he was getting close by the increase in activity back stage. We took the stage again and performed “San Antonio Rose” and “This Land is Your Land.” Lee Ann had the crowd singing along with that last one and it was very moving. We finished with “I Hope You Dance” and the crowd really loved it. We were then asked to wait in the hall outside the green room for the President’s arrival. Pretty soon he came in…with just a couple of security guards…and we had our pictures made with him. He was very personable and relaxed. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of famous people, mostly entertainers, and I really don’t think much about it. However, this was very different. Bush is not only the most powerful man in the free world, but a man I respect greatly. It was quite an experience. Supposedly, they will mail us the pictures sometime soon. We had to leave before he spoke in order to make our flight back to Nashville. Once we were dropped off at the airport, however, we learned that our flight had been cancelled and there was no way to get home that night. We toyed with the idea of staying the night in Pittsburgh and flying out on Sunday, but ultimately decided to fly to Atlanta and drive home to Nashville in a rental car. So, Lee Ann, her stylist Mary Beth and I arrived in Atlanta around 11 pm and hit the road. We finally made it to Nashville at around 2:30 am Sunday morning. I had to be at my church at 6:45 to play guitar in the band, so I was pretty wiped out. Still, it was better than being stuck in Pittsburgh and we were able to spend Sunday with our families. The travel situation was a bummer, but I didn’t really mind. It was a great experience to meet the President and it’s always fun to play with Lee Ann. Jim |
