Competed on the( Chain & Bell) Bike rally over the weekend.
Flying the flag for KLMC. It was in aid of British hart foundation and raised around £500.
30 odd bikers from mostly north wales clubs did the 11.5 ride around lake Vyrnwy.
I spent the day with Dave thomas (DVT) Talking about rallying days of old and when we used to do the run around the lake at fullchat back in the 70s.
I ejoyed it even though we got wet. ;

BETTER Somerset Stages Rally

Posted by Chris Williams (Members) at Apr 28 2008, 12:09 PM. 2 comments

What an enjoyable day we had down in Somerset.

SS1 we started to hear a rattling about a mile in and both of us immediatly though it was a puncture from the noise but Jim soon realised the car was handling fine and when we arrived at the stop line we were told that we had lost the near side bolt out of the sumpguard so off we went with the sumpguard making a tune for SS2 and 3. On the road section we discussed how everything was going and I was appearing a little hesitant on the notes for a completly unknown reason.

With the sumpguard now sorted and our new Hankook slicks on the car it was off to the tarmac of Porlock. Jim hates tarmac and I think was slightly nervous but we gave it our best shot and we came out of it with only one slight moment and a very stong fuel smell in the car. The boys in Emergency Service hit the valve with the wheel brace which seemed to cure it. Off we went to do the second run.

Rolled up to the ATC and Andy Burton, Shaun Gardener and Will Nichols were all waiting at the ATC We pulled up to the yellow board and as we did in went Burton and Gardener we were next in to the control with Car 230 and Car 229 behind and then Will Nichols. Certainly an experience anyway. I'm not sure I would have liked to have been that Mini. Whether it scared Jim I'm not sure because we set a time ten seconds faster that our first run. and we both really enjoyed both runs. Not all was well though as a mysterious tapping noise was uncovered towards the end of the stage and on the road section only when in 5th gear. We got back to service and found that we would have longer than the original 45 minutes. The service crew took the box out and made sure all was well which it was and the cause of he rattle was never found but thought to be something in the diff/diff casing and if it broke it broke.

Out we went again to do the short Whits test and then into Croydon for the longest stage of the rally. The sumpgaurd again started to play a tune as it had come loose towards the end of Croydon. It was soon fixed in emergency service and then off we went again to the short Chargot. Had the biggest moment of the day on a 1 Right double tightens and dropped the back wheel of the edge and I thought that was it there and then but the wheel took a big thump which bouned us back onto the road and we got away with it. On the second run we came to the steep uphill section where there was a log in the road just after a bad bump and there was nothing we could do to avoid it. We found we had picked up a puncture and so we set about to change it and found that it had also bent the rim.

Then it was a matter of getting to the end from there and scoring some points for the championship and with no more dramas to report we strolled into the finish with 63rd overall and 3rd in class and the car had come back in one piece.

A big thanks to our service crew of Chris, Matt, Pete and Pez for keeping us going all day.

We are now 4th in the BTRDA 1400 Championship, 2nd in the Class 1.4L Championship and I am 2nd Under 25 Co-Driver.

Get Connected/Carless Fules Wyedean Forest Stages

Posted by Chris Williams (Members) at Feb 10 2008, 07:11 PM. 0 comments

Just thought I would let you all know that I popped down to the Wyedean for the first round of the BTRDA. I was sat alongside Jim Ward in his N1 Spec MG ZR.

Heres how it went:

I have to say I really enjoyed myself being chucked around the Forest of Dean!

SS1 - We managed to catch the car in front with about a mile and half left and lost the brakes for a bit.

SS2 - Again managed to catch another car this time Car 228 I don't think he was aware that we were there and almost ended up in his bood but we never lost much time as there was only about a mile left of the stage.

SS3 - Had a minor excusrsion into some shrubbery/undergrowth thanks to no grip from the tyres which put a slight dent in the side of the car but nothing major and again lost very little time... there was spectators there though. I think we lost more time at the acute hairpin when we sent a few marshals scrabbling for cover.

SS4 - Quick blast around the Racecourse and got results to find that after SS2 we were winning the class. At service we were winning it by 12 seconds.

SS5 - The long one everything was going very well until Jim as above said ignored my calls of 1 left... I repeated it twice but by the time I repeated it the second time I had realised we were never going to make it and we decided to go tree hugging with the front end with a fair thud. We probably only dropped 10-15 seconds after the car fired up first time and only cosmetic damage.

SS6 - We ended up losing the exhaust.

SS7 - A matter of getting to the end.

Have to add thanks to all the organising team, the marshals that stood out there, also to Jim for letting me sit in and his service crew.

Also I have to add I have never seen so many people out there spectating. Especially stood in SS6, for a mile and half they lined the road on both sides and those egging us on.

We ended up 86th overall and second in class 1.4L, 13th 1400 overall and 6th or 7th registered BTRDA 1400 competitors.

That now makes 7 stage rallies, 7 finishes, 5 awards

205 Challenge So Far!

Posted by Chris Williams (Members) at Jun 4 2007, 09:56 AM. 3 comments

2 events down, and we finished them both :D

The first was at the Spring Stages at Driffield and I had to miss the Westmorland for it. I didn't really know what to expect from John who had only done two rallies previously and we set out on the first stage seeded at 38. Got back into service after 7 miles and we had set 3rd fastest time. :D Couldn't quite believe it. The first cars were all complaining that the chicanes had opened up for ourselves along with Kris Hall/Ella Flynn who were seeded at 27 and they had set 2nd fastest and Mat Smith seeded at 25. But the fact was that I think we just caught them unawares and maybe the top crews got caught in each others dust? We continued on our way and remained in the top ten for the rest of the day. Going into the last stage we were 3 seconds behind Kris and level with expert in the 205's Andy Davison and so it was nip and tuck for 6th overall and 2nd 205 Challenge crew.

We got to the end of the last stage and Andy had beaten us by 2 seconds and Kris had beaten us both so we had to settle for 8TH OVERALL, 3RD IN CLASS, 4TH 205 CHALLENGER AND 2ND IN THE INTERMEDIATE CLASS OF THE 205 CHALLENGE.

The second round was at Twyford Wood and after setting some competitive times and a good result on the first round everything was set for another good run here. Before we started the heavens opened and on went the gravel tyres. Having got drenched recceing on bike the day before we were going to have to do it all again. In the first stage we were a second of the pace of Kris/Ella after getting held up for a slight distance. Kris steadily started to pull away from us in the class lead until the last stage and we were 25 seconds behind. Until we came round a corner being waved down to stop behind a queue of cars with Kris's Stobart Peugeot blocking the stage. The final stage was cancelled and we were promoted to 7TH OVERALL, 3RD IN CLASS, 4TH 205 CHALLENGER AND 1ST INTERMEDIATE CLASS OF THE 205 CHALLENGE.

We are leading the Intermediate class and 2nd overall in the whole fo the challenge. So far so good but the forests come next and fingers crossed for 3 weeks time when its the Mid Wales Stages in Newtown.

This is just to whet your appetite until I can figure out technology enough to put a video from my phone to the computer (or you find it somewhere on youtube) Right, stage 5, flying finish, yellow Mazda type thing slides sideways into view and flops off the side of the road, crew are thinking "hell, we're lucky we didn't roll eh?" then very very slowly the car starts to slip sidewards. quickly gathering momentum it rolls 150 feet down a rivine, the last 50 of which were sheer cliff face!!!!! Graham Clark, who was manning the flying finish sees this and attempts to reach the crew, scared of what he's gonna find, ripping the backside out of his pants on the way. Amazingly both crew have walked away despite the car landing on it's roof!. Recovery go in, winch the car up and it drives to the finish. I sat and spoke to the crew at prizegiving, to say they feel lucky is an understatement, they had come to terms with the fact they were gonna die on the way down. when you see this vid you will understand. One lucky speccy caught the whole thing.

Hi,
my dad used to be a member of KLMC from about 1987 -1993 and used to rally 1300 cars ( Astras VNL 858Y and B750 TEO, and Talbot Samba XCP 295Y)

Would anybody have any old pictures from events like the Pendragon and other airfield events over west?

Thank you

Charlie

Highlights of 2006

Posted by Dan (Members) at Dec 4 2006, 11:36 AM. 12 comments

Come on then everyone, what have been your competing highlights of 2006?

Thinking about it I've had a very very good year, maybe a little bad luck but I can't grumble.

Highlights have to be:

2nd Overall on the Shaw Trophy - just hours before the start I thought I'd be pulling my entry and marshalling/going home, but Paul Allen stepped in and we overcame several isses (like him not having a licence or a 2006 licence form!) to finish just 7 seconds behind the winners. My first ever top 10 result, never mind a podium, felt ace for weeks after it. Will always remember the finish when results started coming out and everyone was saying "Car 17, who the heck are they?!?"

VK Derbyshire - first time in Derbyshire, long way from home and slightly worried about the reputation of rough Whites, but ended up having a cracker. Tracks, quarries, fields, farm yards and double usage (in reverse) of several Whites. Definitely an event to do again.

Westmorland - Tan Hill. You know how sometimes it all just comes together?

Memorial - joked with Steve Head the week before about us getting a 1-2. We did, with Stevey winning and me 2nd. Its an event I've always wanted to do well on, granted we had a bit of luck with Simon Harrison going back for a codeboard, and Alex would have been challenging if he'd entered, but I'll take whatever I can!

Three Swans - another long drag from home, Paul and I decided to have a steady run round and a bit of a craic. We did just that, and despite missing a NAM and therefore a codeboard we really really enjoyed the event. Honestly had no idea how we'd done, so when results showed we'd have won without the codeboard we were partly gutted, but also made up with what we'd achieved.

Countdown - highest ever seeding (car 2) and ended up running first on the road all night after Tyco & Neil decided to go to the pub after TC1.

Beaver - took Tom Wilcox to Hull for some Beaver (fnarr fnarr) as the long shot in the ANCC championship. Didn't think I had a chance, but when the other two contenders dropped down the order we ended up just 14 seconds behind the 3rd place I needed to take the drivers title. Kinda fitting to end the year with another "If only....."!

Finishing 2nd Overall in SD34 & ANCC - never thought I'd be within 1 or 2 points of winning the Championships! We'll be back to try again.

Hopefully next year will be another good un :)
