GMel,

Odd. I thought the winter was over for people in our area.

For as long as I can remember, we've always had a winter storm around St Patrick Day.

It's usually our last of the year.

Then I found out that the local old defunct Rocky Mountain Arsenal, which has been transformed into a wildlife sanctuary, is going to be releasing a herd of bison this Saturday morning ... and I have a tour with the Sierra Club scheduled for the afternoon. How cool is that?

Releasing bison? :wow: Friendly reminder, do not be anywhere in front of the bison when they are released. ;)

You live too dangerously TribbleMom. ;)

Not to worry ... the releasing will be done in the morning, with the sanctuary closed to the public until noon, and the tour (on an enclosed bus) is in the afternoon.

I should tell you about my bison adventure in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park:

I indulge in amature photography. The Tetons provide wonderful scenery. I went out early one morning specifically to find a certain old Mormon settlement barn that you've probably seen on a calendar before. When I found it, I was of course excited and set up my tripod, started messing around with different exposure settings and changing lenses and taking lots of different shots.

I didn't think much of it at the time, but in the background I could hear a small single-engine plane circling somewhere behind. I knew there was private farmland back there, so thought perhaps that someone was crop dusting. Meanwhile, I'm focused on the images in my camera's viewfinder. A short time later, I saw some bison moving about in my periphal vison. I looked around to see a herd of about a hundred buffalo heading my direction. The small plane was actually herding the buffalo off the private land and back into the borders of the national park ... and I was shooting pictures right in the middle of their path.

Fortunately, I had stayed close to the car. I snatched up the tripod and camera bag, threw them in the back seat of the car (and I NEVER throw my camera gear) and dove in the front seat. The buffalo streamed past the car at a slow lope, totally ignoring the car as if it were a big rock in the middle of a river. I gained a healthy respect for bison that day.

BTW, here are links to some of the shots I got that morning (note in the second one you can see the plane that was herding the buffalo):

Of course, a person must always assume that there is a risk and some unpreditcability when dealing with animals. Of course, there's also risk and unpredictability whenever you get in a car and drive on the highway, too. ;)

Wild animals will generally leave you alone as long as you give them enough space, and I always shoot with a zoom lens, so I've never experienced a real fear for injury when I've been photographing animals. Usually they just want to go about their business (eating, grazing) and don't mind you if you stay far enough away.

Mfive, you must have really enjoyed that. I don't often hear "sunny" and "Seattle" in the same sentence.

And happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone. :wave2:

TribbleMom,

That was a great story! Thanks for sharing that. I can't imagine what it must have been like being in that car with the bison running by! Not to mention what it was like seeing them coming and having to run for your car!

Great pictures too!

My son would love to see those bison. BTW, he is going to be purchasing another snake soon (another corn snake). There is a pet store going out of business in a few weeks, so he is getting a good deal on it.

I wonder how much bison weigh (on average)? I always think of a moose when I think of a bison.

Thank you. Please feel free to help yourself to desktop wallpaper. I feel complimented that you'd like to do so.

I had actually entered a couple of them into a contest that the National Park Service was holding to determine the photo that would grace their next year's annual National Parks Pass card. There were over 15,000 entries, and my 2 made it into the top 100 finalists. Didn't win, though. Still, having made it past 14,900 other entries made me feel really great, especially since photography is only a hobby for me.

I wonder how much bison weigh (on average)?  I always think of a moose when I think of a bison.

They're pretty big ... a healthy mature bull can be 6 feet tall at the shoulder, about 12 feet in length, and around 2000 pounds. Cows are smaller (5 feet tall, 8 feet long, 1000 pounds). And when they want to run, they can reach 30 MPH.

Here's a link to a good shot of a Bison bull who was scratching his head on a tree at the side of the road:

They have tremendous muscles in their necks and shoulders.

We got to see only one Bison today, way far off in the distance. The refuge folks wanted to give them plenty of space to adapt to their new surroundings. Other tours will commence closer to their release area in April. Meanwhile, we were treated to mule deer, whitetail deer, a few hawks, prairie dogs, and a coyote today.

Warner,
Sounds like your son may have the makings of a veterinarian some day. How many snakes does he have?
I still can't help but shudder whenever I see one, so I have a hard time imagining having one as a pet.

That's quite an accomplishment, none the less. If they hold the contest every year, you should resubmit photos. Next year, could be your year. :wow:
