Last night was one I hope I never have to repeat. We were in the emergency room with our 5 year old daughter until almost 2am. She had been playing in a McDonald's play area with a couple of her school friends and ran into a metal support column. My wife was with her at the time and called me while I was driving home from work. Our daughter has a gash in her forehead that is about an inch long and needed five stitches.

She'll probably be fine when she wakes up. I, on the other hand, still have these vivid images in my head of her wrapped in a sheet like a straight jacket with a face covering that had a hole just large enough for the doctor to work through and her getting stitched. I held the bottom of the face covering up so she could look downward the whole time. She was a real trooper throughout the entire night and, considering the injury and the hour, I'm simply amazed. She cooperated with the hospital staff and was in good spirits. It wasn't until about 2/3 of the way through the stitching that she finally had enough and started to cry a little. (Of course, she cried when she first got the injury too.)

She just woke up while I was typing this. She's in great spirits. It looks like my wife and I are the ones who will need more recovery time... :D

Very sorry to hear this happened to your daughter. :( Sounds like she will make a full recovery.

She might have a tiny scar, but tell her it will give her character. ;)

My upper lip was busted when I was her age. Had to get three stitches. You can barely see the scar now (extremely faint).

They also make a product called Mederma for scars (something I didn't have as a kid). Its now over the counter, but her doctor might not recommend that particular product. So its good to ask.

IE,

I'm happy that she's doing better. When I first read the beginning of the McDonald's incident, I assumed she may have been choking on something. But it still isn't easy seeing your child hurt in any fashion.

Isabel,

Hey. Please disregard my PM to you--I can access your Board now without any trouble. I was getting some error message for a short time. :)

24 and Warner,

Thank you. :)

Regarding the scarring, we were told the most important thing is to keep the wound out of direct sunlight for about a month. So she'll have to wear a hat for awhile when outside and try to stay in the shade as much as possible. Then we are told the scar will mostly fade because she's so young and growth will help it quite a bit. I will still ask about the Mederma though.

Hopefully the scaring will fade pretty quickly.

Well the snow is pretty much gone here. A few patches here and there. The rain washed it away. :(

We still have snowbanks that are several feet high here.

There's a reason that Bathurst holds annual snowmobile races with competitors from all over Canada and the States. Our snow never melts*.

*Except for a few days in the summer. ;)

Sorry to hear about the little one IE. What happened at McDonalds? Maybe that pole she ran into needs a little more padding if the little one was able sustain an injury the required stitches. Maybe you should check it out.

I hope the ER experience wasn't too horrifying for her (or you and the Mrs.) Sounds like she was a trooper. I've had some children (okay some adults too) come through the ER screaming bloody murder. It can be a very scary place sometimes.

Hope she doesn't hate doctors or nurses after this.

Thanks. I plan to go to that McDonald's and see if such an accident should have been reasonably predictable. If so, I'll raise a big stink about them getting that padded. I wasn't there when it happened so I can't picture it. In my mind, there should be nothing sharp enough to make a gash like that so I'm expecting to have something to complain about.

As far as the ER experience, I was concerned at one point because, while she was crying during the stitching, she moved slightly and the facial covering slipped down. I thought she could see what the doctor was doing. Today she said she saw nothing though. I'm glad that either that's true or she doesn't remember it. Also, she was extremely well-behaved. Nothing like those kids you mentioned.

The worst, for me, was watching her being stitched. It's quite unnerving to watch hooks (the needles are U-shaped) being poked through your daughter's forehead even knowing it's for her good. And occasionally the blood would run down into her eyes. The doctor was very good about wiping it immediately, but it added to my daughter's stress. I was so happy when I could say to my daughter "it's over".

As far as her hating nurse or doctors, I don't think so. Her biggest reaction has been completely appropriate - she says "I wish I was watching where I was going". That was how it happened. She was being chased by a couple of her friends, had looked back at them, and turned back forward too late.
