Gosh, I've just been reading the first few pages of this thread, back when I was a bit of a newbie here!

I can't believe how much she is getting in 4th grade. It's taking so much time, she has gotten to bed at about 11:30pm every night this week even with my helping her through much of it (which is why I have no time at home). She's getting a lot of stuff that I never saw until middle school when I was growing up. The performance-based school funding has turned real education upside down IMO.
How much homework are they giving kids these days that would require them to still be doing homework that late in the evening? They are already in school for most of the day. I know, it's ridiculous. She has to read 30 minutes every night. She has a spelling test every Friday consisting of 25 words so we study those Mon-Thurs. She has a reading test on Friday too (different reading than the 30 minutes), but doesn't usually get to bring that home until Thursday so we study that only Thursday nights. That reading test also has 6-8 vocabulary words from the reading and she typically has to write vocabulary sentences on Wednesdays. On Mondays, she has to write spelling sentences. On Tuesdays she writes each spelling word 4 times each. Each night Mon-Thurs she usually has 2-4 pages of math homework which lately has consisted of very basic algebra! (I never had any algebra until 8th grade!) Each week, she has either social studies or science homework too - alternating weeks. Those consist of reading and answer questions. Each Wednesday she also gets a writing assignment which usually requires writing at least 2 full paragraphs. It all adds up.

Oh, I feel really terrible. I accidently deleted the General chat thread over at MCP. We lost nearly 600 posts. I feel really sick.
All, I was trying to do, was to delete one post, which kept appearing on every page. Turns out, when I deleted that, the whole thread died. I've done this many times on my own Trek Boards. Sorry it happened to you too......

Kids are in school 7 - 8 hours a day/5 days a week already (that's practically a full time job). That should be plenty of time for a kid to be instructed/practice/do homework within school hours. They could teach 4 hours and let them practice/do homework for 2 - 3 hours. Or find some other rotation of teaching/alternating of subjects/practice that allows for a better use of school hours.
If you as the parent wish to instruct them further, then leave that up to you to work out based on their need and in a more efficient way.

My daughter is a fourth grader as well and she has a very similar load of homework. I couldn't believe that they had fourth grader doing algebra. Between school work and soccer, my daughter is pooped everynight.

They seem to forget that it's very important for kids to be kids. Kids learn just as much from playing as from anything else. It seems like my daughter has little play time.

I think all this started with the increased emphasis on testing. They teach kids in a way to pass those tests now instead of teaching in a way to maximize learning. It's really a shame.

Wow, are you driving one of those big rigs Fowler? That's pretty cool. Thought there would be more greenery for some reason though. Are the top photos the receiving station... and the bottom photos your farm? Yup, I drive an 18-wheeler My plate on the tractor ( or cab ) is 1701
These pics are from the first day and second day digging beets. We were at my brother-in-laws farm. There is more green, hubby is in the defoliator and that pulverizes the beet tops then the digger comes through and digs or pulls the beets out of the ground and load them into the truck boxes or trailers. Some have cages that are side dumps. All of our crews trucks are end dumps.
Hubby and his two brothers all go together and we harvest all of the beets. Oldest brother-in-law drives the digger/puller and his wife drives a straight truck and their son drives a semi, hubby the defoliator and I drive semi with our oldest son driving a straight truck and other brother-in-law drives a straight truck with his son driving a semi, and that nephew got Casey's picture on magnets that we have on our tractors and trucks so he can be with us this harvest. It's bittersweet seeing his picture every day and every load. But it was very sweet of Richie to want to do that.
We're on the last field today, I think it's about 95 or so acres. Hopefully we'll get this one done fairly quickly. I'll try to post more pics later. I should get lunches made and I need to oil my trailers chain.
