We had rain which stopped beet harvest for a day or so. We'll find out if we can go later today or if we wait until tomorrow. But until then I'll be heading up to my oldest sons house and do some baking. Banana bread, blueberry muffins, lemon poppyseed mini loaves, brownies and poss. some cookies. I'd bake here, but his kitchen has way more counter space than my kitchen has and lots more outlets, too ;) Good thing he is only about a quarter mile away <BG>
Sounds good, you having a bake sale or something?
No, just baking stuff for our lunches. During harvest we get to 'enjoy' lunchbox living, so we try to include some things that aren't the usual sandwich and chips....some extra goodies. I had planned to do a bunch of baking a couple of weeks ago, but that was put on the back burner. So since we had a couple of days of rain and couldn't get out into the field to dog, I had some time to bake and get a few groceries, too. Plus I even got some laundry done ;)
Yum, yum. Plain sandwiches and chips can get old fast.

How quickly to you have to get beets to the distributors, or to whoever you sell them too?

Beets being root vegetables are pretty stable. We still have a bit of beet industry here. Spreckles, located between Salinas and Monterey, was at one time years ago well noted as a hub of sugar beet production.

We have a lot berry and lettuce growers around here. Those pretty much have to be harvested and transported to the cooler the same day. Also, you really can't take your time harvesting the berries or they will over ripen and be good for nothing other than juice and jam, etc. Peak season you are rounding the field every few days.

Noticing the name of a local hair salon the other day made me wonder: Just how many towns/communities have establishments called "Curl Up and Dye"? Or "A Cut Above" or some other similarly cliched name?

I like beets, but I don't think I've ever eaten fresh beets (usually out of a can).

I have eaten fresh uncooked turnips. I wonder if they taste similarly to beets in the uncooked form. Fresh turnips taste a lot like mild radishes to me (sweet when they are cooked). Slice one up, they make good snacks when in the spring/summer. They go good in salads too.

^^ Indeed.

I was reading the other day about how Kevin Sorbo had three strokes during the filming of "Hercules: Legendary Journeys". It limited his abilities in someways, but he kept on working anyway. He said he suffered a lot of pain for about two years.

I was only vaguely aware that he had a health scare back then, but didn't know the extent. I also remember the way he physically interacted on the show changed too.

It looks like I'm in one of those busy periods again. Life seems to go up and down that way. My daughter is getting piled in homework. I can't believe how much she is getting in 4th grade. It's taking so much time, she has gotten to bed at about 11:30pm every night this week even with my helping her through much of it (which is why I have no time at home). She's getting a lot of stuff that I never saw until middle school when I was growing up. The performance-based school funding has turned real education upside down IMO.

And work is non-stop crazy too. I'll keep dropping by when I can, but it has been getting more difficult to find much time lately.

How much homework are they giving kids these days that would require them to still be doing homework that late in the evening?

They are already in school for most of the day.

Oh wow, I had no idea. He has quite a dominant role in that movie doesn't he?

Maggie Smith, was in the middle of chemo therapy and described herself as a "boiled egg." Its really amazing because she had such a powerful role in the Deathly hallows part 2. I find it incredible that she kept going, despite the pain she was going through! Wat an amazing person!

You can always tell who the dedicated actors and actresses are.

Well, it was a series. He pretty much had to be in every episode (six seasons).

Haven't gone looking or anything, but word is that Gerard Butler has been in the area (Santa Cruz) filming a movie about the late surfer Jay Moriarty. Today was supposed to be the big surfer memorial scene. Recreating about 1,000 folks on surf boards and, guess what? It's not CGI, they're using about a thousand extras!

We take our sugar beets to a reciving station, or pile ground, and then they are hauled to the sugar factory for slicing and being made into sugar. We haul ours from the field this month and they'll be hauling them to the factory at least into mid January usually.

I'll try to get some pics put up

I always admire people who continue to fight whilst battling something as horrible as cancer.

Wow, are you driving one of those big rigs Fowler? :wow:

That's pretty cool. Thought there would be more greenery for some reason though.

Are the top photos the receiving station... and the bottom photos your farm?
