I'm watching something called Kolchak: The Night Stalker!!! Anyone heard of it?
I've heard of it, but never really watched it. I've seen it listed on the tv menu a few times.

This week, a lady's house burned down not far from where I live. Thankfully, no one was hurt. She had food cooking on the stove, when she left her house to go over to the neighbor's house. Who knows why she went to the neighbor's house or how long she was gone. She came back to her house in flames.

I didn't know her, but others around did. I suppose more will come out about why she left the house to begin with. Obviously not a very good idea to do so with the stove on and food cooking.
Not too smart of her to leave the house with the stove cooking (assuming there wasn't some really pressing reason, although even then she should have turned it off), but at least she wasn't hurt.

I don't even like to leave certain appliances like the dryer running if I'm leaving the house.

I watched that show sometimes when I was growing up (which will give you some idea of my age :D ). I don't remember a whole lot about it now, but I remember that I liked it at the time. The stories were thriller types if I recall correctly.

We've been having troubles with our garage door opener for awhile now. When closing the door, it sometimes reverses and goes back up. It did that for awhile and then started getting worse where we'd have to retry 5-10 times before we could finally get the door down all the way. I tried a few things to fix it, but didn't have any luck. So today I was planning to go buy and install a new one (it's 12 years old after all). I got on a ladder to read the horse power level and then I noticed the real problem (or another problem).

There are 2 by 4 pieces of wood around the whole door frame to which the entire garage door unit is attached. Those pieces are pulling out of the wall in such a way that the top of the door actually scrapes one piece of wood slightly. The whole door has to come off in order to fix it. It's a single 2-car door so it's huge - no way I can do it myself. So now, instead of the relatively inexpensive door opener swap I was going to do today, I'm now waiting for a repair person to come give me an estimate. :( It still could turn out that the opener is bad too because it's possible that all the jerking caused by the continual reversals is what actually pulled the 2 by 4's out of the wall.

That sounds like a hassle. So what's the verdict?

Wow, IE, good luck with the garage door repair.
Ah, the joys of home ownership.

We discovered cracks in our siding this past winter. We've been going round & round with several different repair guys, getting estimates and determining the nature of the problem. Came to find out that all 5 houses in a row on our street have the same trouble. First thought it was maybe faulty materials, but several independent companies said that it was installed incorrectly. Was put on too tightly, butted up too close to the next piece, which did not allow for expansion and contraction when the temps changed between freezing in winter and the heat of summer. So Monday morning we've got a crew coming to caulk all the cracks and repaint (oh, and the builder used really cheap paint that wasn't going to last much longer, too). Next we get to fight with the builder about possible compensation; we're past our one-year warranty period, but haven't owned the house for even 2 years yet. One other neighbor had her house already fixed in order to sell it and the others are waiting to see if our builder will offer a fix-it plan. Always something.
Meanwhile we just spent our tax refund on new home office furnishings for the interior. Finally I have bookcases, desk, computer table, & file cabinet that all match each other. They also pick up the Mission style of the TV credenza in the living room. So I finally feel like I have a grown-up house now instead of a hodge-podge of hand-me-downs. Only took 50 years.

They were supposed to come between 2pm and 4pm yesterday afternoon to fix the garage door, but then called at about 3:30pm to say they got hung up on a previous job and couldn't make it. So now I either have to take time off and be home from work some time this week or wait until next Saturday. :ermm:

Wow TribbleMom, that's a lot of houses having the same problem. If you all band together, I would think the builder might have to pay more attention because their reputation is at stake.

Congrats on your new office furniture. I know what you mean about the 50 years to get it all together. We still haven't done so with our own office. Our bedroom finally happened just a few years ago. And our living room mostly matches, but we still have a hand-me-down sofa that we really don't care for and have been wanting to replace for years. But it seems the money always has someplace to go that's a bigger priority.

Wow, that sounds great. Yeah, I'm still in the hodge podge stage with furniture.

That's inconvenient for you. :drumfingers:

For a number of reasons, I imagine you will want that door operational pronto.
