So, the little side business that we started a while back is going nicely. When not consigning items we are also finding low priced or free items to clean up and flip. Now this is not the point of my comment here, but is essential background info to tell the following amusing anecdote.

Earlier today my brother-in-law and I are out on a pick and delivery run. Our route took us to the Palo Alto area, home to Stanford University. Not thinking anything of this, my brother-in-law is wearing a UC Berkeley "Cal Bears" hat. Stanford's athletic and, occasionally, academic rival. It is also the only viable explanation for his "experiences" today.

First, we stopped for a pick up and the guy gives my brother-in-law a funny look. He's wearing a Stanford t-shirt and that should have been our first hint, but we thought nothing of it. Next we stopped at a McDonald's to grab a very quick bite of lunch. My order was fine. His, on the other hand, was botched in several ways. His beef wrap? Chicken. His Filet o' fish? Chicken. The former he toughed out and ate, the latter he went a got exchanged. Then we stopped for gas. As I filled the truck he went to get a drink. Bear in mind this is a very busy Chevron station. The clerk asks him for exact change but relents and breaks a $20 for him. As he walks out and counts his change he finds he is $5 short and has to go back in and address the issue.

This isn't the first time I have questioned his wisdom of his attire when doing pick-ups and/or drop-offs. The last time was a couple of weeks ago driving through the "hood" in Salinas and what is my brother-in-law wearing? Red cap and red shirt... :scared: :loling:

I told him that if he's not careful he's going to get me killed!

Your brother-in-law seriously needs to rethink his clothing choices.

My niece is not the happiest of campers...

She is due to return home tomorrow after spending almost 2 weeks in Florida on vacation with her mom hitting various theme parks. Sounds pretty ideal.

Au contraire!

Thursday morning we get a call from her mom telling us that our niece has been throwing up and a has very bad abdominal pain. EMT's saw her the day before and were not concerned. Mrs. Swidden, being a medical professional, strongly urges my brother-in-law's ex to get our niece in to see a doctor right away. Long story short: Appendicitis. Bad to worse even though it did not look like it on the ultra sound, turns out as they are removing it it is ruptured.

Go on vacation, spend four days in the hospital!

She got out Sunday afternoon and with the doctor's blessing still managed to get to the newly opened "Harry Potter World" today. No rides, except for her being in a wheel chair. But she did get to sample Butter Beer (non-alcoholic. of course).

^^ Glad she is doing better. At least she got to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. :harrypotter: :D

I saw a bit on the news about the opening. Some of the stars were there and it looked like big fun.

Swidden, I hope your neice is doing well. That story reminds me on my onw appendectomy back when I was 14. Went to school in the morning, started feeling ill during my first class, and by 5:00 that afternoon I was in surgery. They said mine was "red hot" when they took it out. At least she still got to have a butter beer.

Just checking in briefly. As usual, summer is a flurry of outdoor activity for me. Grandsons' baseball games today, a hike tomorrow, then on Wednesday I participate in our workplace's summer volunteer project, which is trail maintenance on Quandary Peak (one of Colorado's "14ers"). I'm taking an extra vacation day from work and staying in that area overnight to try to bag 1 or 2 other 14,000-foot peaks the next day. Then July 4th I'm driving my Mom up to my sister's mountain cabin for a relaxing day. The following weekend will be the women's weekend work crew on the Colorado Trail, doing maintenance near Mt. Shavano. Well, since Shavano just happens to be another 14er, I'm taking an extra vacation day then, too, to try to hike it on July 12. May not be on the boards much over the next couple of weeks. See you all when I get a break again.

^^ Nice that you get to turn the volunteer time into a mini-vacation/hike.

I have never heard of Butter Beer...until Swidden's mention.

Is it me, or are there fewer telephone booths out there now? It seems I can never find one when I need one.

Common in the Potter books and not made as big a deal in the films.

Its kind of sad in a way seeing one technology being replaced by another. Not that progress is always bad or anything...just a touch sad sometimes. It can definitely be inconvenient when "you" are in the middle of that change.

I have not read the books. I may read them someday after the movies wrap up. I didn't want to feel disappointed in the movies if they weren't exactly like the books.

Must have missed the reference in the movies.

I saw a two-door Ford Pinto on the road the other day. It was puke green with red bondo. It was loud as a tank and looked like it was struggling to get from stop light to stop light. The guy had a tattered old sticker on the bumper that said, "Friends don't let friends buy Fords". :rotfl:

Hi everyone,

Geez it's been a long time since I was here last! Time just keeps going by... I hope you are all well. :)

Work has been nonstop lately and there have been huge changes. We have had two significant managers leave and one new manager who was supposed to oversee those two, but now has all the responsibility until we find replacements. The two leaving was unrelated to the new one coming, but the timing was bad because they were supposed to help train the new manager.

The new dance agency that my daughter attended this year did much better in competitions than the old one had. They made it to the national finals and competed last weekend. One routine that my daughter is in took 1st place in her age group! :yippee: Another one that she is in made it to the top ten and was aired on a live webcast for the final round of competition. They took 6th in that one. The agency as a whole had 4 routines in that webcast and 2 others not eligible for the webcast that took 1st place in their respective categories. So we are definitely seeing higher quality with this new dance agency and it's quite evident just in watching their performances. The old agency never made it past the first round in the national finals.

We went to Disney's Animal Kingdom a few weeks ago and it was the first time any of us had been there. I didn't expect much because I hadn't heard good things about it from people that I know who have gone before. But it was better than expected, but still just an overgrown zoo with a few rides. There was a roller coaster though that took me by surprise because it was unlike anything my daughter had been on before. She previously went on a medium sized roller coaster and loved it so we took on this one called Expedition Everest. The tracks aren't visible for the most part, but they allow kids as small as 46" so how bad could it be...? Well there was one point it went backwards down a fairly large drop! It also went through areas of total darkness more than once and did a spiral inside one of those dark areas! My wife and daughter were sitting in front of me so I couldn't see my daughter's face, but I was very concerned throughout the ride that she might be scared stiff. But it turned out she loved it! :whew:

I have also been continuing to watch Stargate SG-1 and am in season 5 now. There have been a few episodes lately that make me think they were getting desperate for new ideas, but overall, this show has maintained it's quality IMO. I see some ideas borrowed from Star Trek too (not to mention some cast members :D ).

I saw a Scion xB a few weeks ago with a bumper sticker that said "You just got passed by a toaster". :D

Hey IE! I hate those Scions. I think they are some of the ugliest cars ever made.

Good to hear your daughter is doing well in dance this year. I guess that last dance agency wasn't working out.

I've always wanted to go to Animal Kingdom. Glad y'all had fun. With your daughter getting older now, she probably won't be scared by much anymore.

With SG-1, it was fun when Trek actors showed up. Being up to Season five, you've probably already seen John de Lancie. I was going to mention a few other names, but I just checked and they all appear in the latter part of the series. I don't want to ruin the surprise. :D

I agree. The "toaster" description is just about right. :D

Thanks. I don't remember if I said this before but there was a mass migration of people from that old dance agency to this new one last year. We didn't initially go, but after my daughter came down with pneumonia and couldn't make it to a performance and then we were accused of lying about it, we left too. We found out since then that the owner had been jacking up the prices of items like costumes and DVDs (from an independent videographer they hired) too. We also were told at the new agency that the kids were being taught incorrectly. The instructors at this new agency are top notch (the main one being in the Radio City Rockettes and brought several of her colleagues on board) so it's believable. So it definitely wasn't working out. This new one is more expensive though so we're probably going to have to cut down some next year.

Yes, I have seen John de Lancie and also Rene Auberjonois. Thanks for not ruining the surprise with the others. :D

I don't remember you mentioning all that before. Sounds like your daughter is way better off dancing under this new agency. I didn't really have a good impression of them based on your experiences with them (as you mentioned a while back).

All of that dance stuff is so expensive. I don't know how parents pay for it all without breaking the bank.

Our DSL has been down since this past weekend. They mailed a new modem out (two days late and ultimately not the problem). A technician came out this morning. They checked the lines outside and found that some kind of filter the phone company put on was room specific. So when we moved the computer to another location this weekend, the service stopped working. Strangely, the modem still didn’t work when we tested it on the old connections. However, it works now. We were temporarily having to use dial-up, which wasn’t getting the job done. Which is also why I haven't been online as much since before the holiday.

With the office officially relocated, I could pull my personal desktop out of storage and set it up. I missed my old friend. :wub2: I got the wireless adapter all set up, but of course it didn’t work at first. I had to call the phone company to get their help. They got the Windows configured properly, I hung up and turned the power off to my computer to rearrange some of the cords (I didn’t disconnect the adapter). I turned the computer back on and the wireless connection wouldn’t work. I called them back, they reset it, I powered down the computer and the wireless connection stopped working again. Turns out Windows is not saving the Wireless information. I keep having to manually connect each time. I’ve been searching the net for some hints on how to fix it, and I am hoping it is something simple like a driver update. I’ve uploaded some driver updates, but it is still not saving the information.

Anyway, fingers crossed that I can find a solution. Tech support couldn’t figure out why Windows was not saving wireless connection information. They offered to transfer me to their more extensive (paid) technical support, but I chose not to go that route considering we just had a tech out this morning. I wish the guy had stuck around long enough for me to discover my connection issue this morning.

At least I have DSL now. I have to click a few extra buttons to reconnect to the main modem, but its better than not having it at all. :D

Wow, 24, that sounds really frustrating. Hope the kinks all get completely smoothed out soon.

IE, sounds like your daughter may do very well in this dance class now with better instructors. Good to see you stop in again.

I'm heading out in just a couple of hours for a long weekend/mini-vacation. This is one of our trail maintenance weekends on the Colorado Trail. I'm staying a couple of days extra so that I can go play on a mountain afterward. Wish me luck and good weather -- this could be 14er #9 on my list of peaks over 14,000 feet that I've hiked.
Then I get a couple of days at home before I head out for another trail work day, this time for my workplace's Adopt-a-Peak project on Saturday. Gee, it's good to be in the mountains again this summer.
See you all again in a couple of weeks. :wave2:
