I imagine you are starting to see a bit of snow/wintry conditions in the higher elevations...or will be soon?
24, yes, some higher elevations have already seen snow. Yesterday as I drove to work in the morning, I could see a white dusting above timberline on Mount Evans. None of the snow will last long yet, but it's a definite sign of Fall.

Hello everyone. I hope all is well.

I just thought I would update you on how my juggling went for my family over Labor Day since I had written in this thread back in July about how I was learning to juggle 5 balls and was hoping to be able to do so for them by my Labor Day weekend visit.

Around the second week of August, I was seeing the writing on the wall with the 5 ball juggling. It had been a long time since I had increased my count of balls thrown before dropping any. The pattern was improving, but the count had actually decreased if anything. So I decided this was probably as good as it was going to get and focused more on practicing my regular 3 and 4 ball juggling routine for the rest of August. I added one particularly difficult sequence of moves while juggling 3 balls where the left hand throws under the left leg, then the right hand throws behind the back, then the left hand also throws behind the back, then the right hand throws under the right leg, then the left hand throws over the right shoulder where the right hand catches it behind the back, then the right hand brings that ball in front and throws it straight up in the air, then I do a complete 360 degree turn and catch it while throwing another ball straight up. That's followed by another 360 turn where I catch it and keep juggling. I really wanted to land that sequence in performance because it was the finale of the 3 ball juggling.

Before going any further, it's worth mentioning that I have performed juggling for an audience only once before and it was way back when I was a teenager. Back then, I didn't really want to perform it until I could do so without any drops, but it had never reached that level. My parents talked me into performing the one time for relatives at a family gathering and, as I recall, I got through it with only 3 or 4 drops in a 4 minute performance. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the perfection I really wanted.

So getting back to Labor Day, when it came time to perform, I got about 10 seconds into the performance and I could tell some nervousness had struck. I could feel my hands shaking slightly and that's not a good thing when you're trying to juggle. I ended up making drops in places that should have been easy. Before I was through with 3 balls, I had made about 10 drops! But I got to that last sequence that I mentioned above and I had already screwed up enough that it just didn't matter as much anymore. So the nerves finally went away and were replaced with frustration. I think I vented all that frustration into that last sequence and I ended up landing it more controlled than I ever had in practice. Whew! I was redeemed (well, somewhat)! :D That is until I went on to 4 balls which didn't go much better...

I did get to show them my 5 ball progress though. It took a few tries, but I managed to juggle the 5 balls for about 30 throws before dropping any.

So, all in all, it wasn't too bad, but I found out the hard way that juggling in front of an audience changes everything...

I have trouble juggling one ball some times; so dropping one a few times when juggling three, four or five is much better than me.

What you need to do is work out a comedy routine to go along with the juggling in which when you do make a drop it kinda looks like you did it on purpose.

I have seen routines like that, but that's like a talent in itself to be able to come up with those routines. I think what I really need is more experience juggling in front of people. So I'm casting aside my old ambition of getting everything perfect first. It makes more sense now to be willing to make some drops and get the experience instead. At least no one is paying me money for a flawed performance. :D

Hey, at least you tried. :D

Glad it went somewhat well. Getting up in front of an audience to do anything can be nerve- wracking.

...and I agree with Dante. If you can work the mishaps into your routine, no one need be the wiser. ;)

Thanks. :D

Working the mishaps into the routine might be easier than a whole routine based upon comedy. Still, I think that would still require comedy of some sort and that has never been easy for me to come up with. As you know, I have also done magic in my past, but I was always more of a serious magician. I have also previously searched the internet for comedy ideas for juggling drops, but have only found some lines such as "that's the very first juggling trick I ever learned". However, those don't work too well in a routine performed to music which is what I do. So I would either have to change the whole thing or find/create some kind of silent comedy to handle the drops.

I think it would also depend on whether or not you have a charismatic performing personality. Some performers seem to be able to work easily with crowds. Changing things up as needed. Practice in front of crowds too would allow you to more easily learn how to adapt your routine. If there is a local club that has amateur talent night, then that could work for you as you hone your skills.

I do see how it could be harder working the comedy into a routine with you using music. If it is predominantly physical comedy, then it could work for you.

Is your performance music the fast paced circus type music?

The clubs' amateur talent nights are a good idea for down the road, but I'm going to stick with family and friends for awhile until I get more comfortable with that. Since nerves became a factor just in front of family, it's likely to be a lot worse in front a larger audience of strangers.

My music is fast paced, but more like soundtrack music.

Sounds like a plan. Slow and steady wins the race! :D

I got carded buying cold medicine today. I bought a combination of daytime and nighttime medicines, Pepto and cough drops (4 items total). I guess they thought I was going to go get high off it. I found it a little bit annoying.

It wasn't for me anyway.

That is a real pain, especially when you're already not feeling well in the first place. But with so many people trying to abuse various substances, I guess I can see that pharmacies need to do something like that. Feeling any better yet?

Changing the subject totally ... would you belive that 2 of Colorado's ski resorts have opened already? We've had some snow in the higher elevations and cold enough weather for some resorts to begin manufacturing their own snow base with the snow-making blower machines (just takes water and cold temps). Denver is getting snow today, too, so I imagine that my nephew is starting to feel the itch (he'll do just about any sport that involves being outdoors). I wouldn't be surprised if his Christmas gift this year is a new pair of skis.

The medicine wasn’t for me. I’m feeling fine though, but thanks. :)

I recently need to buy Claritin D and got carded as well. It was behind the pharmacy counter too so I even had to ask for it. It seems it has an ingredient that is being abused by some people so they want to control who is buying it. It's stupid though. I merely had to sign a form - it's not like any of it proved I wasn't buying it to abuse it. Maybe they would question it if I was in there a few times in a short period.

I was watching a movie called The Island last night (was ok if you can overlook a few obvious impossibilities). But this one actor looked awfully familiar and I finally decided it must be John Billingsley. Upon looking into it, it was actually Ethan Phillips. It's funny how that Star Trek make-up can make it difficult to pinpoint who they are. (It's like the same thing that happened to me with the Borg Queen not too long ago in Attila. )

They probably would have prevented you from buying it if your name had appeared several times on the list during a certain amount of time.

I didn't have to sign anything. She just asked for ID. I was dressed in sweat pants, t-shirt and hat, so she probably thought I was a lot younger than I am too. So that might have been a factor.
