TribbleMom! Good to see you! Still fighting the computer battles I see. ![]()
Congratulations to you and your family! Will this be the fourth child for that particular step-son or are the children spread out amongst other step children? |

^^^ This will be #4 for that step-son. They're a little spread out in age: 12 (boy), 6 (boy), 1 (girl), and the new one on the way. Too soon yet to determine gender. Personally, I'm hoping they'll decide that 4 is enough, or things could become quite expensive! And yes, I'm still fighting the wretched software system at work. Unfortunately because my department is fairly small, we're low on the priority list for any desired upgrades. Sometimes I wonder if we're really in the 21st Century or not, because I seem to rely more on paper files than on that computer. Not very efficient, and it is extremely time-consuming. October will mark the year anniversary of switching over to this new system. I think I may be starting to become accustomed to the daily frustrations because I'm not quite as angry every day as I was in the first 6 months.

We have been having major gas shortages in my area. I hope I can find gas today. Most stations are either out or there are long lines at the few that have gas available. |

Why the gas shortages 24? Things are starting to get really scary. Hope the prices don't go up too high and that you can find some without having to get in line for a long time. |

Well, it started with the last hurricane. At first, the prices were simply high. Then the supplies dwindled a little (there was a distribution problem for this area of the region due to pipeline problems in the Gulf…or something like that), but there wasn’t a major shortage yet. Then the supply began to dwindle a little more because people were concerned about the high prices. They topped off their tanks and were filling up their gas cans too for a reserve. Then the various local news stations started pumping out report after report of some of the problems in the area regarding high prices and the slight shortage. The stations were doing brisk business, but not all were jam packed with cars lined up. The news however would go out of their way to find the stations that had cars lined up and flash those images on the news. Their actions in turn created more panic. So in the last two or three weeks, we’ve seen more and more gas stations offering very little or no gas at all. I’m not the only one to see how the media contributed to this problem. One station did a special report on how they weren’t responsible for creating more panic. They had been getting calls/mail telling them to shut the heck up that they are making the situation worse with their alarmist news reporting. They of course took no responsibility for their actions. Anyway, there is supposed to be a major shipment of gas in this area tomorrow. I was able to find some today, but did have to wait a short while in line for it. People are very testy though. I was in line waiting to pay for my gas along with a lot of other people. There was a man to my right off to the side talking on his cell phone. I thought he had been waited on, so when one of the station attendants went to handle my transaction and took my money, he got irate and said he was next in line. I told the lady to hold off that he was next in line, but she said that she had tried to get his money three times but he was busy talking on the phone. I pretty much agreed with the lady at that point and said out loud that he was talking on the phone (in a way that pointed out the obvious for why he was passed by and on to me). He went on to fuss, and he was still fussing as he was yacking on the phone through the parking lot. That whole thing would not have happened if he wasn’t distracted and talking on his freaking phone. What, is it so hard to get off the phone for a minute while you go in a store to conduct your business? Geeze. |

I was never very big on cellphones. Telephones even for that matter. I finally had to cave in when I started going home at odd hours of the day. Cellphones are really great for emergencies and the like. I'm definitely not one of those people who walk and talk on their cellphones. Have you ever come across those kinds of people who are shopping and busy talking on the cellphone about something or another. In the meantime, not paying attention to the world around them. Have you actually listened to said conversation? From the ones that I have eavesdropped in on, it's all nonsensical.

I hate cell phones. I can hear most people’s ringtones a half a block a way and the conversations are just as loud half the time. I don’t think many of these cell phone users know what they are doing or where they are going half the time because they are on their cell phones in another world. I don’t have one, and the only thing that would make me get one was if I ever came to a point where I thought I needed one for emergencies. I would probably look into getting one of those pre-paid phones so that I wouldn’t have a monthly bill too. I just think they are too obtrusive. We have regular phones, answering machines, beepers, blackberries, strawberries (or whatever those berries are), all kinds of other e-mail/Internet technology. Many ways that people can get at you. Where are we allowed to draw the line and say this is "me time, leave me alone"? ![]() If you need to wear one on company time (or a beeper), that is a little different. When you are not on company time, they will often act like you still need to be "on call" if they know you have one on your possession. A cell phone can chain you down if you let it. |

I think you forgot raspberries I agree ... I don't like cellphones either mainly because of the way that people use them all the time, getting distracted from what they ought to be doing at the moment instead (like driving). Like Intrepid, I have one for emergencies and for "checking in" when I get done with my solo hikes. For safety's safe, I always tell someone where I'm going, when to expect to hear back from me, and what authorities to call if I don't check in by sundown. I can go for a week or more without even turning the dang thing on. 24, I heard tonight on our local news about gas shortages in the Southeast. They were saying it's a question of distribution and the local refinery production being temporarily interrupted by hurricane damage. I think you have a really valid point about the media making it a bigger problem than it might have otherwise been. |

I'm not a fan of cell phones either. I didn't get one until 3 or 4 years ago and I only did then because my wife had one and I couldn't see paying for both that and a land line. So we got rid of the land line. They are handy sometimes though now that you can hardly find a pay phone anywhere. Over the weekend someone rang my doorbell. When I answered, he was standing in my driveway talking on his cell phone. He wanted to sell me $3 steaks. I can't believe the stupidity that he thought I would want to buy something from him while he's on the phone. And steaks..? For some reason, this Little House on the Prairie episode came to mind where some guys had sold some beef for really low prices because they knew it was contaminated with anthrax and wanted to unload it...Edit: I saw a bumper sticker a little while ago that said "Hang up and drive!"

Re: Cell phones I think that scene in Star Trek V back in 1989 was rather prescient. The one where Uhura comes looking for Kirk and co. and he says "Why didn't you just beep my communicator?" She replies, "You didn't take it with you." "Oh. Wonder why I did that?" is his answer. That day is here. Want to be left alone? Leave that cell phone behind... |

There are some good uses for cell phones, but sadly many people just don't have boundaries with them. Often at the expense of other people. TribbleMom and IE, I can see them being useful in your cases. Especially if you no longer have a land line. IE, that's funny about the steak salesman. Did you buy any? LOL @ the bumper sticker. ![]() Swidden, You know, I bet there is a line in Star Trek somewhere that could be applied to every situation and issue. ![]() I just learned a new word. "prescient" ![]() |

I don't think I could buy food products from a door salesman. You really don't know a lot about the quality of the food. |

How's it going everyone? I'm glad the weather if finally changing. Getting cooler here especially in the mornings. I don't think I mentioned that I have a new dog. He's a little terror. Into everything. I've had him since about July (he's about five months old). I had to have my other dog put down due to senility and old age (this summer). That was really hard to do. I loved that little guy. I wasn't seeking a new dog, but somehow still ended up with one. Anyway, my new dog is part Miniature Pinscher/part Chihuahua. Small, but not so small that he can't walk and climb up most things on his own. He runs so fast that he almost flys onto everything. I would post a picture, but I haven’t taken any and I don’t have a decent camera. Maybe I can get one up someday. He's black and brown in some areas. |

I named him Bailey. I tried to come up with a Trek name that fit his personality, but couldn't think of a good match. |
