Some dingbats burglarized my brother’s house today. They got in through the back door. It was busted in. He and my sister-in-law were not home, but their dogs were. They were not injured. The big dog was even put into the backyard (which is fenced in). The big dog is very threatening looking and sounding at first (he's a huge hundred pound plus sized doberman), but can be handled. He’s not dangerous or mean. They took small items such as guns, some of her good jewelry and her laptop. Left everything else like TVs, desktop…big stuff. My brother has a safe that could not be accessed as well. Since they both have semi-irregular schedules, the dogs were easily handled and only small items were taken (things that could easily be carried in a bag), I suspect it was a local who burglarized them. They had to have been somewhat aware of their comings and goings and the behavior of the dogs. Where they live, a strange car sitting nearby (casing the house) would be noticed. I think it was someone in the neighborhood or nearby (within walking distance). They have home owner’s insurance, so that will cover much of the damages. I believe some of the jewelry that was taken had been passed down to her. Nothing too expensive. However, that will be a sentimental loss. Hopefully these jokers will try to pawn the stuff. It will be easier for them to recover the items if that happens. |

Sorry to hear about your brother and sister-in-law 24. Funny you should mention that. A couple of days ago, an acquaintance down two streets was burglarized. Her jewelry as well was taken (she called it very sentimental costume jewelry) and a few other things but TV's and the like were left behind. What she did say was that her home was ransacked by these people as if they were looking for something and couldn't find it. They too, went through her back door. She emailed everyone she knew in the neighborhood and gave us all a heads up to look for a silver moving van. Apparently, the van parked in front of her house while they were gone and no one really suspected anything. As I was leaving for work today, there was a man in a white van fiddling with the lamp post on the street. He saw me leaving my driveway and I started to get nervous. I went back and re-checked my door. Made sure the back door was locked and the blinds were all closed. Then as I left, I look in my rear view mirror and got the license plate of the van. He was actually looking at me looking at him. I was a wreck all day thinking about my house. I got home and everything was in place but it's nervewracking. I wonder if it's a sign of the hard times. I don't know. Lock your doors everybody. |

Crazy times.
I'm kind of surprised they went in through the back door. The way that my brother's house is situated, he has neighbors on the right and left but there is a layer of trees just thick enough so that you can't see the neighbor. There is also a field right across the street from them. A bunch of cows over there. However, in the back there is a visible row of houses on the next street. All of their back yards are pushed up against each other. There are two or three houses that could look across the yard into his back yard. He does have a slightly enclosed back porch, but there is definitely more of a risk of being seen back there. It was probably a matter of them not wanting to take a chance that a car driving by would see damage to the front door. So they decided to take the risk with the back. |

Sorry to hear that news, 24. Thankully your brother and sis-in-law have insurance, but there's still nothing that can help with the feeling of being violated when even your own home isn't safe anymore. I'm glad that neither of them (or the dogs, either) were harmed. Since the laptop was stolen, this could set them up for ID theft issues. You might suggest to your brother to sign up with an agency such as LifeLock, one of those places that advertises that they'll cover your tushie if someone steals your identity. Such agencies can provide legal services to restore your good credit. They'll also place fraud alerts with credit agencies every 90 days for a year (for a fee, of course) so that when anyone tries to open up new accounts under your bro's or sis-in-law's names will raise some red flags. Spending $100 or so with an ID-theft protection service now could save a lot of troubles down the line. They should also begin monitoring their credit lines at the freecreditreport.com website. |
