Oooh Shinyness? I might have to steal that one. My avatar bunny Besilda is lookin' at your brandy new laptop. Oh Shinyness. IE.... Sorry to hear about the budget cuts. I'm sure Mrs. IE will find something soon. Personally, I think it's time for you guys to move back up north. You know you miss the snow. Don't deny it. Anyway KOTers, I'm a little cranky tonight. I got myself in a heap of a mess. Last week, my sister dropped by with my 4 year old nephew Matthew. Well, my sister and I start talking and when the "phew" comes over, he's usually not bad or into anything dangerous. Anyway, moments or two later, he comes to me and starts pulling my arm in the middle of my conversation with my sister. Like the doting aunt I stop and say, "Yes Matt?" "Guess what Auntie, I can write my name." "Oh yeah?" I said as I tried to shrug him off by offering him a cookie. "Auntie, Auntie, Auntie". Tug, tug, tug at my arm. "Yes Matt?" "Really, really I can Auntie Intrepid". "Good for you little boy now go watch Dora." He starts to whine and my sister finally said to go ahead and focus all of my attention on him. "Yes Matt. Did you learn that in preschool?" "Wanna see how I wrote my name Auntie?" "Yeah sure." In the meantime, he takes my hand and leads me to my bedroom and there it was written with a Sharpie permanent marker on the wall. All in big huge capital letters at least 4 inches tall a piece. M-A-T-T. "MATTHEW!", I yelled. "Nope, it's M-A-T-T not Matthew". Right now, I'm covered in paint and I'm tellin you all, permanent marker on walls doesn't come off easily. |

Well I tried one of those mr clean things and along with taking off some of the ink, it also took away a good part of the flat paint. I went into my garage to see if I had some leftover paint from when the room was painted and I had just a little to cover it but the ink kept seeping through the paint. Next stop was some product called "Kilz" and away went the name but now I didn't have enough paint. So I was thinking I wanted to go lighter in that room anyway, so I went ahead and primed the whole room. One coat wasnt enough so I did a second coat. Now all I have to do is pick a color. The excitement in my life is killing me.

Thanks, I did survive the workplace move, but just barely. On top of our workplace moving (and us having to physically do it all, of course), a friend of mine is also in the processs of moving to Kansas City. Being the good person that I am , I volunteered to help her load up the U-Haul. So Friday, after having moved desks and files boxes and pallets of merchandise all week, I loaded couches and recliners and boxes of household stuff. Naturally, it didn't all fit into the one truck, so my friend arranged to get another U-Haul trailer and we loaded that on Saturday. I went to bed early last night and didn't get up until 9:00AM today (extremely unusual for me). Normally I rise before the sun does.I could be pulling my hair out about my workplace move. You would think that when you move a computer from one building to the next and plug in all the cords the same way, that it should still print to the printer it was using before. Not this time. Apparently some IT folks need to reconfigure all our printers, 'cause I can't get a merchandise return pack slip to print out on any of the printers I used to have access to. Not that that's important to my job or anything. And I can identify with IE these days ... our phones didn't successfully get switched over to our new building either. It's been so quiet without those blasted things ringing all the time. Wish it could stay this way, but that too makes it kind of difficult for me to do my job. ![]() IE, I wish your wife well on finding a new position next year. Seems that education will take it in the shorts when it comes to budget cuts before things like, oh, recreational sports programs would. So sorry to hear that bad news. |

The "catch" to the stimulus money is that it's increasing our national defecit. So our nation is going further into debt trying to make people spend borrowed money. Intrepid, it sounds like you're trying to make lemonade out of a lemon that life handed you. Good for you. Hope you like the new paint in your room. That's always a really big, messy job. Sounds like you nephew is 100% all boy. I wonder sometimes where kids get the idea to write on walls with Sharpies. |

^^^ It's half done right now. I give up. It's Sunday afternoon afterall. The room gets done when it gets done. Sometime I wonder why I get so anal about things like that. Time for some lemonade indeed. Not to be overly critical of your company or anything like that TribbleMom, but.... did they make you actually physically move your office as in load trucks etc. etc.? Did they get you any outside help? Hope the new digs are nicer TribbleMom. I'm sending you a virtual housewarming (office-warming) plant for your new office. I hope you have a window with a beautiful view.

^^^ Aw, how nice of you! And, no, our company didn't hire anyone else to move us. We got to pack up our own areas and load it all onto pallets ourselves and partake in the physical moving of our desks. Outside help would have cost $$$, and we can't have that. Besides, my "office" has always been out in the big warehouse area, so I'm pretty sure I'm still considered one of the "grunts." The new digs aren't much to my liking, to tell you the truth. I'm still in the big warehouse, and my department actually has less floor space than before. We do, however, have more vertical rack space, which means I'll be climbing up & down a rolling ladder a lot more. The good thing about that is it'll have my legs in better shape for climbing up mountains this summer. The other bit of good news is that my desk is now placed directly under one of the big heaters suspended from the ceiling ... but that's also bad news, because when the thing fires up, I won't be able to hear very well on the phone. (Not like I could before, so what else is new?) Oh, and there are no windows in the warehouse, so that plant might not last too long. At least they did provide additional lighting above our desks so we can see without such horrible shadows from the overhead vapor lights. The trials of our new computer software (since October) and this move are just about enough to make me seriously look elsewhere for a different job. But at my next anniversary date I'll have been there long enough to qualify for another week's paid vacation, so that's incentive to stay. I'll give it a little while longer to see how the new workspace pans out. Always have to give something new a fair chance. |

Thanks all for the kind words regarding my wife's job. It's going to be a big change for us. Other than a few part time and summer jobs while going through college, my wife's employment background has only been in teaching people with disabilities. Here in Florida, the jobs with non-profit agencies working in that field don't pay very well. My wife had started out working in one of those jobs originally and then got hired by the school system to work for them on-site at the very same non-profit site where she was already working. So she has been at that site for 16 years. But her salary with the school was more than twice what it had been just working for the non-profit agency. So it's very likely that whatever new job she finds will mean a huge pay cut and, after working at that place for 16 years, going elsewhere will be a big adjustment as well. The facility itself is having its own financial problems so it's unlikely they will be able to rehire her.
24, You had asked about the bandwidth. That was the easiest part of last week's activities. Our ISP had come previously to bring in the new wiring and then last week they just had to install a different router. The catch was that it had to be coordinated with our new phone system because it's voice over IP (in other words, it now uses the internet bandwidth instead of the normal telephone lines). So there were certain configurations that had to be done at the same time and they had problems doing them. Our phones were supposed to be down for 10 minutes during the changeover, but they ended up down for almost 2 hours because the ISP guy couldn't get past an issue he was having making the configurations. But the phone people were here for 3 1/2 days! That was the much bigger headache last week. Intrepid, My daughter once wrote on our family room wall, but it was regular marker. Luckily, I was able to fix it with touch up paint. How unfortunate that your nephew used Sharpies! I guess you'll be hiding those next time he visits! TribbleMom, It sounds like you had quite a move. I can't believe they made you move all that stuff yourself! My company moved a few years ago and, other than some minor packing, a moving company did it all. It seems your company isn't too worried about dishing out some worker's compensation!
We were at my daughter's dance competition this weekend. We stayed in a motel with all the families on Saturday and the kids had fun in the pool. Most of the parents in my daughter's dance group sat on the side drinking heavily. I just don't get that. I have nothing against social drinking, but not at a time when you're at an event for your kids and you're supposed to be responsible for them besides. Me? I was in the pool with the kids and with much better company I'd say.
The water, on the other hand, was FREEZING! Oh well, the things I'll do for my daughter!
The competition was on Sunday. They didn't do as well this year as last year, but it was still fun to watch.
My daughter had a good time and that's really what counts.

Ahh, okay. Probably would have been better for you all if they had addressed these kinds of infrastructure issues before you moved into your current offices. It wasn't that long ago that you moved buildings. Unless time is flying faster than I thought.
I grew up around some people who were irresponsible when it came to the consumption of alcohol. It definitely had an impact on how I perceive alcohol consumption now by others. I agree with you about the inappropriateness of the situation. Social drinking is one thing, but boozing it up in front of a bunch children is not right either IMO. At least you and your daughter had a good time. What kind of dancing is your daughter involved with?

Believe it or not, it has been almost 4 years already. It was September 2004, the same year we had those 3 hurricanes in a row. We got delayed by those hurricanes so I remember that well.Mostly she does ballet/acro right now, but they are starting her on a little bit of tap dancing now too. Two years ago, she was selected for a special group among kids her age and this group goes to competitions. Last year they took first prize in one competition because they pulled off their best performance ever that day. The following weekend they had another competition and didn't do nearly as well. This year, the group isn't quite as good and they didn't really do very well at the competition last weekend. Oh well, it was fun anyway. They have another competition coming up on May 9th. Maybe they will do better by then. Next year, she will be in the next age category and, in order to continue on the competitions track, she will be required to take tap dancing and jazz dancing as well as ballet/acro. Each class is a separate fee and, together with the competition fees, traveling fees, and costume and shoe costs, it will be quite expensive.

What a night. First I had a hectic day at work and got out on the late side. I had to run a couple of errands on my way home so I finally arrived home at about 7:30 pm only to find that my air conditioner was not working and it was 82 degrees in my house. So I spent the whole evening fixing the problem which was nothing more than a clogged drain line. However, that clog caused the whole unit to freeze up. So first I had to run it on fan-only until the ice melted. Then I had to free the clog from both the drain line and what had backed up inside the unit. I finished at about 9:45 pm. So much for the other plans I had for this evening.

Almost four years? I was thinking 2006ish.
I've heard horror stories about exorbitant costs associated with dance. Those little costumes can especially be expensive. Hopefully your daughter won't want to go into a dozen different kinds of dance/activities at one time. If she ever wants to do pageants then may fortune be with you. ![]() I did dance when I was a wee bit, but freaked out one morning and said I didn't want my parents to leave me at the class when I was being dropped off once. I never went back. It wasn't until high school again that I did any kind of activity that required costuming and fundraising (marching band). The uniforms were provided for us and we sold things for fundraising.
Pretty lucky that you were able to fix it. I agree with Intrepid, you saved a bunch of money by being able to fix it yourself. Intrepid, I have had to start running my air conditioning as well. The weather gets nippy occasionally, but we are getting high 70 degree weather already. |

Intrepid and 24, thanks for the Kudos, but unfortunately it turns out it was premature. Every other time my AC froze up it was a clogged drain line. So I figured that had to be it last night. I had watched what the repair guys did to fix it in the past so I did that procedure myself this time. It got us through the night, but it was all frozen again by this morning.
It turns out the AC was leaking freon this time. Because the unit is 10 years old now, it isn't worth the high cost to fix that (almost $1,000) and makes more sense to replace the air handler (the inside unit). But that will cost almost $2,000. So much for saving money.
But at least when my new one gets a drain clog, I know how to fix that myself. ![]() I'm going to Atlanta until Sunday to visit some relatives so I won't be around for a few days. Then all next week, I'll be home getting my house exterior painted. This is going to be quite the expensive year. Thank goodness for savings!

Now that's when it got ugly. When I decided I might as well paint it another color. I'm still trying to decide what color to pick. Well, I did pick out a new comforter so I might try and match some of the colors in that. How did such a simple task turn into a production? |
