I'm fine now. I was beginning to wonder if it is/was indeed possible to transmit such things through the internet.

Last night my daughter told me that her school where she now has kindergarten held its first fire drill. So I asked her about it. Her answer wasn't quite what I was looking for so I said, "Ok, so the fire alarm went off and then what happened...?" She replied, "No Daddy, the fire alarm didn't go off, it came ON!" ![]() Then I made the mistake of trying to explain that expression...

Good morning everyone! ![]() I saw that Cingular/AT&T has a new texting commercial out. This one has the mother fussing about everyone texting instead of just the daughter. And the grandmother is over there texting her BFF Rose. ![]() These commercials are funny, but you have to wonder about the effects on families who do go to such texting extremes. First they all start talking in Text Speak. Which is only good if used in small quantities. Second, there is a breakdown in family bonding and communication. They appear to spend most of their time at home texting others instead of spending time with their own family members. This goes way beyond sending a quick text message to someone when you are out and about or working on something (at home or work). While I laugh at these commercials, I would never get such a texting plan if I had a family. I would even make sure the phones were set up for emergency use only if I provided one for a child. |

I struggle with texting. It's such an ordeal texting with two thumbs. I'd much rather call. My sister was telling me how her cell phone bill got out of control because of texting. One of the kids was racking up 800 or so texts a month at 10c a piece. The other three kids weren't as bad but it was up there. The Commander (my sister) put a lid on that one really quick. When each child had subsequently paid off the texting portion of that bill, they got their cell phones back. So now they're on this unlimited texting family plan for $29.99 a month and they're still texting each other and other people like crazy.

24, I agree with your thoughts about text messaging. In fact, I think there are a lot of technological devices that are breaking down not only family relationships, but social relationships in general. For example, walkmans, computers, and Nintendo type games; even fast food drive-through lines. People are becoming increasingly isolated from one another. As social contact decreases, I fear that social etiquette and responsibility will as well. I also think they have somewhat already. As a side note, about a year and a half ago, my wife's then 99 year old grandmother was beginning to deteriorate mentally. She started text messaging my wife looking for her son (my wife's father) about 15-20 times per day and we were paying for those messages. So we eventually had text messages blocked. Although her grandmother died a short time later, we have never turned the text messaging back on. Personally, I prefer speaking to texting. |

Wow, $80.00 on texting alone. And that was just one person... ![]() I have never texted. I don't even own a cell phone. I don't like them, but may get one someday for emergency use. |

I have had similar thoughts about other forms of technology. I'm wondering what a completely "plugged in" society will be like. Should we be scared or should be embrace it? Tough questions. |

Tough indeed. I seem to recall a Voyager episode devoted to that very topic. If I recall correctly, it was about people on a planet that had given up technology because they had seen problems with it. However, in the end, they were so determined to keep technology out of their society that it became a problem in itself. I'm a little fuzzy right now on the details of the episode (including the name of it), but it did well in pointing out aspects of the dilemma from what I remember. |

I'm not recalling the episode either. I can search the list of episodes tomorrow though and see what turns up. |

Personal opinion: I think we should be afraid of it. We risk losing some of the good aspects of our humanity, such as learning to help others and rely on others as well. Within my own lifetime, 4 decades ago people interacted more and needed each other more and learned to be kind, helpful, and civil because of it. And I think that extended into our respect for the earth and its other living beings. Today, I am seeing more and more of the isolation and insulation. People are losing touch with each other and are forgetting how to look beyond their own immediate satisfaction. Used to be that people smiled and acknowledged each other walking down the street. Now most folks are plugged into an ipod or MP3 and just walk by ignoring everyone else. Not all technology is evil (as I am obvoiously using technology right now), but the over-use of it may be detrimental. Technology is OK as long as you remember to occasionally pull you head out again and look around some. |

I am trying to approach this onslaught of technology cautiously. I tend to be behind the times anyway for some odd reason or another. It took me the longest time to switch over to CDs (from tapes). Even longer with DVDs. I still use VHS tapes/VCR way more than I do DVDs/DVD player. I still don't own a cell phone.

Good evening everyone! Everyone staying out of trouble? I'm trying to.
I'll be glad when Autumn arrives. This summer heat is the pits. Autumn is my favorite time of the year. The trees are beautiful. I love the gentle afternoon breezes. |

Hello everyone. I really can't complain about the weather today. It was fantastic. It was cool enough to turn off the air conditioner and open the windows for a cool breeze. We're actually hitting the 50F mark during the early mornings. It's great. I hope it stays this way till January. I fought that "bug" a little bit longer than 24 did. I had an annoying headache and felt nauseated for a week. I think maybe I've been hitting the caffeine a little bit more than usual. I was drinking those so called "energy" drinks to get me going but I see now that they have terrible side effects. I think I finally purged that stuff out of my system. Never again. Take care everybody. |

Coincidentally, I believe that what I was drinking at the time was contributing to my sickness. I had a strange reaction to a particular brand of pink lemonade that I was drinking over several days. As soon as I stopped drinking it, I slowly began to feel better as my body purged the remaining lemonade from my system. I don't drink those energy drinks, but I have gone through periods where I would drink a lot of soda and it eventually made me feel pretty bad. Too much sugar and caffeine. |
