IE, did you happen to notice if there was some road-kill where those large birds flew in front of your car? Most birds of prey are not above being scavengers, and road-kill will attract them. In fact, that's one of the leading causes of bird-of-prey deaths from automobiles. I'm happy to hear you could avoid them.

I missed the last couple of days getting onto these boards because I seemed to have picked up a nasty flu virus somewhere. Very likely the stress of jury duty helped to lower my resistance (I rarely fall ill), and all the public transportation and public restroom door handles, etc.,, last week probably contained way more viral bugs than I normally come into contact with. I'm on the mend, but did have to miss these past 2 days of weekend work at my warehouse (oh, darn, that really breaks my heart). Nothing wanted to stay down in my tummy and I was running a fever, so I thought it best to stay home.

Just FYI, we did conclude the trial and reached a verdict Friday afternoon. We deliberated about 6 hours before finally coming to a unanimous decision to convict, murder in the first degree. As typical for a Libra, I vascillated back and forth on a number of the points, weighing the pros and cons, bringing up many questions, playing devil's advocate, but finally the logic of all the evidence (albeit most of it was circumstantial) pointed to his guilt.

We viewed the final 2 hours of tapes of the original police interview (we'd seen the first hour in the courtroom), and 2 things convinced me that he did it ... first, the investigators had said that this young man was being questioned about "the shooting" (and the police never said "murder"), so later in the interview, when the defendant said, "I didn't kill that guy," that meant he did have his own independent knowledge that someone had died. Later, in the 3rd hour of questioning, the detectives told him, "You are being charged with murder in the first degree," and the defendant had virtually no reaction at all. It seemed as though he had been expecting that, even though he kept denying that he'd even been there at all (when his cell phone records indicated that he was in the area at the time).

So after that, we had to debate whether the defendant did the shooting in a hasty reaction (which would have made it 2nd degree murder), or in a deliberate, thought-out manner (1st degree). Since there had been some verbal exchanges just prior to the shooting, and since there had been time for them to decide to leave instead of letting the situation escalate, and this wasn't self-defense, I finally had to agree that there was time to reflect on his decision-making that night. So now this young person is headed to life in prison without parole.

I'm really glad that's over, and I hope I don't have to do it again!

Intrepid, I've finished the latest Harry Potter book now.

Sounds like you made the best decision you could TribbleMom. At least that will be one more criminal off the streets.

Too bad you got sick. I hope you are on the mend.

I bet your boss was cursing the timing though considering your mention of all of the work that needed to be done. I'm sure you were in tears from not being able to go in. ;)

Seriously, the time off was probably needed anyway after serving on such a trial. I know I would need it.

Wow, that is strange.

Things like that happen to me every once in a while.

Or it will be a situation like I am reading or thinking about something, and not long after that I will see what I was reading or thinking about.

Very freaky sometimes.

Actually, I remember reading a thread or an article on my computer the other night and a commercial on the TV came on about that very topic.  My mind just went blank and I can't remember what it was. :rotfl:

I think I better start drinking ginseng or something.

So it's not just me... :whew: :D

I have tried to explain this in rational terms. For example, plenty of things happen once and they go unnoticed because there is no particular reason to find them unusual. When the second ones occur just by chance in close proximity to the first, they stand out. And I'd be satisfied with that explanation except I been observing this for years now and it's really amazing how there is never a third occurrence. Now granted a third one would be far less likely, but never...?

There was no road kill. The two birds weren't even in the same location, but I think they may have been the same kind of bird. I have seen birds fly near my car before, but somehow they always seem to know just how far away to stay so they don't get hit and so I have never need to apply the brakes. These two birds probably would have been hit if I hadn't reacted. Maybe they're descendants of the Dodo Bird. (Perhaps that should be Doh Doh... :D)

I'm sorry to hear you caught a flu bug. I hope you're feeling better by now.

I'm glad to hear your jury duty is behind you. I'm sure it was none too soon for you. Given that the verdict was unanimous, it sounds like it was most likely the right one too.

Guess what I got in the mail over the weekend? My pre-jury duty selection form. It seems my turn may be coming soon. :( I wonder if they'd believe me if I told them my dog ate the form? ;) (I don't even have a dog!)

Oh, heck, I hope I haven't jinxed you!
Quick, go buy a Starfleet uniform and wear it the day of jury selection!

And, thanks IE and 24, the flu bug is in retreat now, although there still isn't a lot of solid food that sounds too appetizing just yet. I think I gave the bug to my partner  ... how kind of me to share, huh?

Hey everybody! How are you all doing? I've been a little busy lately. Tina had some time off of work so we've been doing some sightseeing. Hope I haven't missed too much.

Hey there Sirus. :hello:

You haven't missed too much. Just a little bit of this and a little bit of that. ;)

Sounds like things are progressing between you and Tina. Is she the British woman that was mentioned a while back (or someone different)?

Actually, she's a new one.

We're having a lot of fun together, but she's leaving back to the states in October. We checked out the observation tower in the largest building in the world the other day.

That must have been a rush! Is the tower enclosed or were you able to feel the wind?

Last night I was thinking about how exciting, but annoying it is to discover a new series of books/author. The last few weeks I have gone through five novels by this author. Unfortunately, there are only five in this series thus far and the sixth book isn’t due out until September 2008. The author has written other books, but I really really want to read more about this set of characters! Now, now, now! :frust: :hissyfit:

On the bright side, if I pace myself I can read at least one of the other books every month for the next year. Hopefully they will be as good. Some are a part of other series. I like it when an author develops a series of books. I don't like to get into a group of characters with no hope of finding out what happens next.

24, oh ... the anticipation ...

I just was checking in briefly, as things have gotten very busy in life. Overtime at work is in high drive, and we have a friend visiting over the Labor Day weekend (travelling through to a seasonal job in Arches National Park). So I may not be on the boards for a couple of days again, but wanted to wish everyone well. :wave2:

Nope. I had recently watched that episode of Star Trek and had it on my mind.

Although, I think it could apply in a few other ways.

Wasn't feeling too good today. I think I had a little touch of the something. Enough of it that I had to stay in bed for most of Sunday afternoon. I wonder if it was something I ate.

Anyway, it's 4:15am in the morning and I'm the first one up.

Good Morning SisterTrek!

What's everyone doing today? I hope everyone has off.
