Hey there Sirus! :) Long time no see. Glad you are doing well. Sounds like your trip home was fantastic. :wow:

Was it a little weird at first coming back to the States after being immersed in another culture for a while?

Sounds like this past year has been fun too. ;)

I'm doing fine. Same old same old. Trudging along. :)

Intrepid,

Weather has been hot for a while here. 80s and 90s for the last couple of months. :thud:

Hey, what's going on everyone? Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I have been taking a break from internet chat for a bit. Especially ones where people lack the maturity to treat each other with respect. I just got back from a week long vacation in Nebraska seeing my family and old friends, and it was fantastic.

Makes a guy feel good to know how much he's loved back home, despite all the debauchery he's been up to over the past year. ;)

Anyway, how the hell are the rest of you? We should catch up and maybe have a chat some time.

Sirus!!

Great to hear from you! I'm glad you had a nice time back home. We've missed you. :) :grphug:

Sirus ... Mel ... good to see both of you again.

Sirus,
Was Nebraska about as hot and humid as I remember all those July's from my childhood?

What have I been up to lately? About 14,000 feet in a couple of cases. (*Cue the drum beats* Ba-dum bum). A couple of mountains climbed, and the rest of the time, mostly pulling my hair out at work.
We're about hitting our busiest time of the year. Being in sporting goods retail, we have large pre-ski-season sales at Labor Day, and all our merchandise is starting to come in now. We're on overtime already. August is always busy; September is totally insane. I only have about 4 days in that entire month off of work. The paychecks are nice, though.

Intrepid, sorry to say that my partner got to the Harry Potter book first. But I'm not going to start any other novels in the meantime ... I'll snag that large tome as soon as I can.

My eyes hurt.

Okay, how attached are y'all to the white background of this Board? Do you prefer white or is some color okay with you? Light, dark, wallpaper?

This would not affect the threads or reply boxes. They would remain white. The main face of the Board would stay the same as well. Changing the background will still have a big affect on the overall look/mood of the Board.

I have been experimenting with colors for a little while now. You missed the purple background that I added. ;)

The idea is to make the Board design look more cohesive. Adding a color background will achieve this. However, if everyone prefers a plain white background then we will keep that.

It doesn't hurt my eyes at all. In fact, it seems brighter and clearer to me.

The change was subtle. It's good.

But go ahead and experiment some more.

The skin is currently as it was before I started testing colors.

The strange thing is, it does seem brighter/whiter to me too. I don't know why.

Maybe I didn't put the correct color code back in for the navigation bars up by the Google Ad. :chin:

I'll figure it out tomorrow.

If I do add a color background, it will make the board look a little darker. Like someone dimmed the lights around the threads.

Edit: Okay, its Saturday morning and I have added some color to the background. Let me know what y'all think of this color range.

Hey everybody! Yes I came back to Taiwan late Monday night, which was early Monday morning Nebraska time, and it has taken this long to finally get my circadian rhythm back on track. It was pretty weird going back after living in Taiwan all this time. I found I missed a lot of little things as well as all the people I left behind. Things like Big Red gum, Mexican food, feeling safe driving on the street, not having rain every day. It being quiet at night, vege-burgers, being able to find DVDs easily to rent or buy, being able to look up something in the phone book and know how to find it.

But, that said, I am glad to be back home. Yeah, I actually think of Taiwan as home now. I don't know how long it will be before I go back, but the life here is exactly what I needed. It's nice and laid back, I have time to take Chinese classes and I have the opportunity to use it all the time. The dating situation is a lot better. I'm not judged by the kind of car I drive or the job I have or how much money I make. I don't have to listen to dittohead ranting all the time, or have fundamentalists trying to convert me. I'm not constantly reminded about 9/11 and Iraq. Everyday I learn something new and have the opportunity to see and experience something new. I'm really lucky to have this opportunity.

Intrepid, compared to here, Nebraska's weather was quite pleasant. Everybody said there was a bit of a cold front at the time, except of course the day I helped my dad fix a hole in my grandma's barn out on the farm. I missed everyone so much and it was really hard to get back on that plane and come home, but I know I would be bored in a month of living in Nebraska again. I'm just not cut out for living in the Midwest. Maybe in 10 years or so, but not for a good long while yet.

I let myself take a break from my hiatus from alcohol one night and got toasty with my friends at a barbeque they threw for me, but I haven't had a drink since. I can allow myself a party once a year with the old friends, but since I'm here where it's easy to get lost in the party, I need to be careful for a while. Talk to you all again soon!

Okay.

Everyone test it out a bit. See if the darker background/lighter foreground strains your eyes at all. The combination of colors can be changed.

I am already experiencing a few visual problems myself. I might have to go lighter on the background. I have to be careful with the purple though. I don't want the board to look like a fairy princess dumped her magic dust all over the board. I like the deep space purple, but its application gets tricky when combining it with white. The other option is to go slightly darker on the threads. It currently is set at white. I could go darker.

Edit: I have changed the background to be closer to the background colors that I have set in other places. You can still see the color that Mel saw in the background of the Disclaimer section down at the bottom of the board. I will leave that for now so that you will see the difference.

Sirus,

It does sound like a good opportunity.

Learning Chinese is very difficult. Especially if you aren't in a formal educational setting or around others who speak it regularly. You are lucky to be able to take classes.

I haven't attempted to learn a new language in a long time.

24,

The change is noticable. The whiter background, for lack of a better word I can't think of right now, is "crispy". It's clean and bright.

Is the new color a variant of purple or gray? Whatever color it is, it is indeed easier on the eyes.

Sirius,

Wow... you're starting to think of Taiwan as your home. How was the trip home?
I'll bet your family was so happy to see you. What was the first thing you ate when you got to Nebraska? :munchies: And what were some of the things you brought back to Taiwan from the States?

Mel,

How's the new job going?

Tribblemom,

Been on any daytrips lately?

I'm going to bed. Goodnight everybody. :wave2:

The white looks extra crispy (chicken joke there ;)) on the threads because of the darker background.

The background is in the purple family....edging close to the blue family. Although, its possible the color may look different depending on what kind of monitor you use (settings on your moniter).

However it appears to eveyone I hope it is a pleasing color. If not, I can change it.

24, I'm feeling great about the background color ... but then, I love the fairy princess and her purple magic dust. Seriously, it's one of my favorite colors, so I find it quite pleasing. My only request is to stay away from a patterend background. I find that distracting.

Sirus, I still can hardly imagine the culture difference there must be between Nebraska and Taiwan. I mean, I know what Nebraska's like (and I really haven't missed living there), but can't even begin to imagine Taiwan.

Intrepid, no day trips for a short spell. Just hunkering down at work and trying to keep my department's head above water. It's been a really bad time this summer for me to be gone from there for very long, so I'm breaking up my vacation time. We closed down one warehouse facility and took on their workload, and I've had to train an additional person in my section (thank goodness we have her ... even with 3 of us now it's difficult to keep up). The learning process is always lengthy and challenging with the many variations we experience in our tasks.

I spent yesterday visiting with my little old Mom. Took her to lunch and played a Scrabble game with her. She was able to capitalize on those triple word score tiles and whipped my butt.

Next Sunday I'm taking a friend on a Sierra Club trail outing, but this is a lower-elevation, nearer-to-town kind of thing, probably 4 to 5 miles. My next vacation days from work wil be Aug. 13th and 14th, and hopefully the weather will permit me to squeeze in one more 14er peak then.

On the 18th we're having a birthday party for the grandson (turning 11). We're renting our condo facility's clubhouse for the afternoon so all the kids in the extended family can use the swimming pool, and anyone who doesn't want to swim can have a large air-conditioned room to sit and visit.

And on August 20th, I've been called to jury duty. Oh, joy!

I'm not a fan of pattern backgrounds either. I find most distracting too.

A room full of kids?

Oooh, fun. Say something like, "I can just tell by the way he looks that he is guilty! Guilty! Guilty!" I'm sure they will snap you up right away for jury duty. :P

How is everyone this fine day? Intrepid, the trip home was wonderful. It does my heart good to be around family and old friends. That's why I went back there to stay for a while right after the divorce. My sister's baby is much taller, and he's lost most of his baby fat. I'll get some pictures up here as soon as I can. My mom and dad are doing well. The factory my dad has been working at for the past 20 years was having a lot of financial problems and was finally sold. Fortunately, senior staff were kept on at their current rate of pay and the former owner is still paying the retirement senior staff accrewed. It was touch and go for a while there. They weren't sure if they were going to loose the pension and/or his job. But it all seems to have worked out.
Old friends are still fine, the guy I was staying with most of the time I was back had his girlfriend move in and they seem like a married couple already. I teased them both about it a lot. The first thing I ate when we got on the road from the airport was Mexican food. I have been craving it for months. Just can't get a decent burrito in Taiwan. But it's worth it. We had a barbecue and I let my no drinking policy slide for one night. It was a lot of fun, but I did kind of regret it the next day. I think I'm finally too old for hangovers. I haven't had any more alcohol since then (about a week and a half ago).

So, I'm back to the old schedule of school and work, studying and biking. I did bring a Playstation 2 back with me along with a CD player/radio/alarm clock and some books. Been a long time since I played video games. It's a nice distraction from time to time. The major difference I noticed were a few things. Nobody I know in Nebraska likes thier job. Except maybe my dad. Either their boss or co-workers are difficult, or they just don't get paid what they should. Or both. I'm really happy with my job, both with co-workers and the pay. I'm really lucky considering what I went through when I lived in Nebraska.

Anyway, I've rambled enough and I have some homework to finish. Talk to you all soon!

P.S. 24, I like the layout. Tribble, have a great time next weekend if I don't talk to you until then!

Looks like we're having a small typhoon roll through here today and tonight. So far it's only been overcast and windy with a drizzle here and there, but it hasn't hit landfall yet. Stay tuned for my first "real" typhoon here in Asia.

Sirus, I hope you can weather the storm OK and it doesn't get too bad where you are. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Colorado is experiencing its monsoon season right now. I'm so accustomed to our 300+ sunny days that I'm finding this raining-every-day routine to be depressing. Almost feels like Seattle (sorry, M5). Our mornings are usually rain-free, but by mid-afternoon here it all comes again. Makes for a lovely commute home after work. Well, at least no one needs to worry about watering their lawns! It's also been a nice break from the over-90 degree temps.
