Intrepid, I got the Harry Potter book today. As soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading ... (I hate to stop in the middle of one and try to come back to it again). Our weather is taking quite a turn for a couple of days. Looks like we'll have rain through Friday. (About time we get a break from the upper 90's). I think I'll postpone my next hike till at least Saturday, as I don't want to become a human lightning rod. But I'm still taking a vacation day from work Friday. Maybe I'll treat myself to a visit to the Museum of Nature and Science, where they are hosting an exhibit of artifacts from the Titanic wreck's debris field. Perhaps on a normal work day, there will be less of a crowd at the museum. |

Wow, look at that view. I love wildflowers. And that trail doesn't look too bad (1st picture). I could handle walking that for a while. I'll leave the vertical inclines to TribbleMom though. The trail looks a lot more difficult to hike by the fourth picture. Hoping that is just a trail marker in the fifth picture. Fantastic view at the summit.
Is that you in the third picture TribbleMom? Hard to tell in the hat and sunglasses. |

Yes, it's me. That's my hiking disguise. (My camera has a self-timer). And the first couple of miles of that trail are really nice. Not too much elevation gain, and the wildflowers stretch on forever in those grassy areas. Reds, yellows, whites, blues, purples dot the whole hillside. The elevation gain really kicks in during the last 2 miles. And yes, that's a trail marker (called a cairn) in the fifth pic ... not somebody's burial mound.

That sounds like fun. I have visted the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C several times over the years and I always enjoy it. They have everything from huge diamonds to stuffed wildlife on exhibit. Every time I go I try to get someone to take a picture of myself in front of this huge turtle skeleton that is a good 5 or so feet tall (long) that is mounted on the wall. I have at least five or six of those photos packed up somewhere.

Hello everybody! Hope everyone is well. Tribblemom, show us pictures of what Colorado is REALLY like. Come on, where's the grafiti? Kidding aside, that's some of the most peaceful, serene looking places I've ever seen. There are hills and mountains here in Pennsylvania but nothing looks like that.I'll bet 24 lives in similar conditions but near the water. Beaches... sunshine... beautiful coastal sunsets. And here I am. I live 30 minutes away from a smoky casino. Yes, it's now legal in the state of PA and I'm thinkin'..... naw..... don't go there Intrepid. It's terribly habit forming... all the free drinks and all. Not good. Have a good weekend everybody. |

Nope, I am about four hours from the nearest beach. I live in a semi-rural area...upstate near the SC/NC border. Located outside of several smaller towns and cities. The nearest major city is Charlotte, NC. There are bodies of water within easy driving distance (lake, river), but I never go to them. They aren’t the most accessible unless you live on the lake or have a boat (neither applies to me).
You too. Have a good one. |

Well, I could go down an alley or to a bus stop with my digital camera and get you some of those pics. But I'd rather escape all that city stuff and go to the mountains. Hre's some more pics I took yesterday. (This time I'll copy the right link the first time): http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...upthesaddle.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...wofTheCrags.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...ettyflowers.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...iewoftheday.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...verthetrail.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...etalusfield.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...efinalpitch.jpg (Look really hard ... there's actually 5 people in this pic). http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g16/Trib...sPeaksummit.jpg I had decided to hike up Pikes Peak, which accomplished my hopes of walking up all 6 peaks over 14,000 in Colorado's Front Range of the Rockies. It was a 12-mile round trip, pretty steep in a couple of places, so that was a challenge. Unfortunately, we are in our "monsoon season", and the sunny days of July begin to disappear behind more rain clouds. The clouds started rolling in about 9:00AM, quite early in the day, but as they carried no thunder or lightning, I decided to keep walking since I was already half-way up the mountian. By the time I reached the summit, the peak was completely enshrouded in cloud, so no expansive view was possible. I actually felt sorry for the people who were driving up the road; at times the clouds were so dense you could barely see 50 feet. And that dirt road has no guard rails! Occasionally I had difficulty spotting the next cairn (pile of rocks) that marked the trail. But there's a comaraderie amongst hikers where everyone is willing to help each other out, and some folks who knew the way let me tag along with their group. This is the only 14er I know of that has a souvenier and snack shop at the top (because of the road and also the cog railway bringing in so many visitors). Nowhere else in this state can you hike to the top of a 14er and be able to buy a hot bowl of soup, and ice cold Coke, and a T-shirt. So now I can say, "Been there, hiked that, bought the T-shirt." Here's a couple of links to learn more about Pikes Peak and its tourism: http://www.visitpikespeak.com/history.htm http://www.pikespeakcolorado.com/GeneralInformation.htm (This second link had another cam link for pictures from the summit. I just looked, and it's clear up there today. Figures. Of course, it's only 7:30 AM.) BTW, you may have heard the phrase, "Pikes Peak or Bust" when you learned about the gold rush in school. Well, there really is a tiny little town called Bust on the north side of Pikes Peak. But it's hardly even a flyspeck on a roadmap. So now that I've completed the Front Range, I guess I'll have to work on the Ten Mile-Mosquito Range. I already did one there, and have 4 to go. Maybe next will be Mount Sherman ... |

Good morning everyone. How are the fine people of KOT? It's another Monday morning for me. Off to work in a bit. TB, those pictures are very nice. I love nature shots...very relaxing to look at. I wish we had mountains we could hike...I would definitely take it up as a hobby. I had an interesting weekend. Saw Kim Mitchell live in concert on Saturday and watched a parade and fireworks last night. Several attempts to upload the vid I took failed last night. I'll try again tonight after work. Have a good day and a good week everybody.

Random thought......TribbleMom.... does it ever get humid in Colorado? How is everybody? It's sticky hot outside. The humidity is killing my hair. I know, I'm so shallow. I'm really into this show on HGTV. It's called "Flip that House". Fascinating it is what they can do with houses and make such a profit.Oh well, off to find dinner and maybe try and catch something Elvis on TV. Supposedly, it's all Elvis all August, on one of the cable channels. |

Hidy ho everyone! ![]() I love the new mountain pictures TribbleMom! I especially like the “Pretty Flowers”. Interesting how they are growing on what looks like a mostly rock, stone or gravel mixture. I can just barely make out the three people in the background of that real cloudy picture (6th). Any thicker and I would imagine it would become extremely dangerous to hike. And she makes it to Pikes Peak! Woo! What kind of hiking shoes are you wearing? Are they the most comfortable/have good traction? Hi Mel! I haven’t been to a concert in a while. Seeing a live performance is a lot of fun. We only get to see fireworks around here about once a year (Fourth of July). Although my neighbors like to fire some off every once in a while. Late when most people are trying to go to sleep. Hi Intrepid! Elvis was the man. I used to love watching his movies years ago, but I never really got into listening to his music. I just catch a song of his every now and again. I just hung out this past weekend. I wasn’t feeling well on Sunday so I laid in bed all day and watched a “My Boys” marathon on TBS. They aired all 13 episodes from Season One as a run up to the premiere of Season Two tonight. Pretty funny buddy show. I think I’ll start watching it regularly. |

Yes, it does. But humid is a relative thing sometimes. I used to live in Nebraska, which was much more humid on a regular basis than Colorado. There I would go outside and frequently feel like I needed to grow gills! Here, "humid" is what we would have considered a dry day there. We had some thunderstorms pass through this afternoon (pretty common for this time of year), so the weatherman just reported that humidity is currently 59%. Was about 65% yesterday. But this is our monsoon season. Conversely, we have many days that are very dry. Sometimes humidity will be only 10 or 12%. I like those days a little better. |

You're right about the thick fog being dangerous. There were a couple of times that I just sat down on a rock and waited for the fog to lift a bit before I could see the next trail marker. Fortunately, I had a fair idea where the road was and knew if I really got into trouble I could always find that. When I topped out on the peak, I couldn't see the shop building at all, so I just had to follow the line of parked cars till I found it. That was one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had. The shoes I was wearing were a pair of North Face hiking boots. Great fit, sturdy, Vibram soles for good traction, and Gore-Tex for waterproofness (really helpful when it rained hard for about a half-hour). Fortunately I have rain pants and a rain jacket in my pack at all times too. I can get them all really cheap with my employee discount through the sporting goods retailer I work for. It always amazes me here how some flowers can grow out of the tiniest crack in a rock. Where they find enough dirt to sink in their roots is one example of what I think is a small miracle. |

24 - Hope you got over whatever it was that kept you down on Sunday. Was he cute? OH JUST KIDDING!
Life is tooooooo short. I digress, forgive me.Sorry folks, I'm in one of those funky moods today. It's been happening quite often I must admit. My sisters tease me and say I'm pre-menopausal. Man-o-pausal indeed. The hormones are flying 0-60 in less than a minute. Oh to be so young (okay age is only a number) and forlorn. *Insert drama queen smiley here* Note to self. Requisition "drama queen smiley" from 24.I'll see you ladies later. You'd want to stay away from me today if I were in a 10 mile radius. So I'm going to go have fun today and pick on some unsuspecting man and make him cry or something. Tribblemom..... hurry up and start reading Deathly Hallows. You'll love it.

TribbleMom, I definitely wouldn't want to get stuck up there late at night with all of that fog everywhere. Also, it sort of reminds me of a backdrop for a scary movie. Thanks for the info. on the boots. Intrepid, Unfortunately it wasn't a he that kept me down on Sunday. I ate a bad combination of food that wreaked havoc on me. I think it may have been more than that (mild bug), but I'm doing fine now.Man-o-pausal? :catchaprince:I thought I had added a drama queen smilie, but I didn't. However, one is added now...

Intrepid, perhaps man-o-pause is better than mental-pause. That's what I suffer from more often. I hear it only lasts about 10 years ... at least I think ... I forget. 24, was it food poisoning? Oooh, no wonder you were in bed all day. No fun! |

Hard to say. All I know is that I got sick <gory details withheld >. If it was food poisoning, it was a mild case. I say mild because I didn't have to go to the hospital. |

Hey, what's going on everyone? Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I have been taking a break from internet chat for a bit. Especially ones where people lack the maturity to treat each other with respect. I just got back from a week long vacation in Nebraska seeing my family and old friends, and it was fantastic. Makes a guy feel good to know how much he's loved back home, despite all the debauchery he's been up to over the past year. Anyway, how the hell are the rest of you? We should catch up and maybe have a chat some time. |
