Saw this article today and had to post it... "Total Recall" is a remake alright, just of a different movie a tad more recent. :o

Huffington Post, Mike Ryan: "'Total Recall' is Pretty Much 'Attack of the Clones'."

Snippet

On Wednesday night, while watching the press screening of Total Recall, I couldn't help but get the feeling that I had seen this movie before. Now, considering there was already a popular movie titled Total Recall that was released in 1990, perhaps this statement on its own isn't too surprising. The thing is -- even though there are some similar tropes to the original -- it wasn't the Arnold Schwarzenegger version of Total Recall that I was reminded of ... instead, it was Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. This is not a compliment.

Attack of the Clones, if you don't remember, is the fifth Star Wars movie (the second, sequentially), which you most likely hate today (but perhaps liked at one point in your life). In Clones, Chancellor Palpatine is the democratically elected leader of the Republic, which is in the midst of skirmish with an organization referred to as the Separatists -- a group that, on the surface, wants to break away from the corrupt Republic.

Now, in the new Total Recall, Bryan Cranston plays a Chancellor, too, named Cohaagen -- the leader of an area called the United Federation of Briton. He, too, is in the midst of a skirmish with a group of rebel forces who, too, are fighting for their separation from the corrupt government.

Something tells me that Chancellor Palpatine and Chancellor Cohaagen, if they ever had the chance to meet, would become fast friends, because, boy, they sure do come up with very similar diabolical plans.

Interesting.

I'll be going to see this movie tomorrow. I don't really want to see this remake (I'm not a Colin Farrell fan), but I get to pick the movie about every other time going.

I'll let you know if it is AotC take 2.

John Cho is in the movie. With Kate Beckinsale, it is hard to see her as anything other than a Vampire.

Doesn't sound like it's doing well. One review said the original is "Citizen Kane" in comparison.

I have had a chance to see the movie now and I thought it was a decent movie. There were a few parallels to other franchises/Sci-Fi themes, but overall I liked the futuristic setting that was created. There were nods to the original movie, but the story was a little different.

I would have liked the characters to be a bit more developed though. I also think the use of Chinese/Asian themes to depict futuristic environments might be a bit played out at this point, but again I still liked the overall feel of the movie.

Surprisingly, I didn't dislike Colin Farrell or Jessica Biel in the movie... two characters that I haven't been a huge fan of. Kate Beckinsale was as usual a bad a$$ in the movie. She might want to consider doing different roles... she's becoming type casted.

I would give this movie 3 and 1/2 stars.

I'll probably watch it when it hits Netflix. I don't mind that they wanted to revisit this film, but they really could have kept the Mars element in it since Mars did play a part in the original Dick story.

I was surprised the Mars element was not included, but I guess they really wanted to take the story in another direction.

Heads up...

Re: the spoiler tag.

Not worried. Little guy is still more in the superheroes than this one.
