Did you like "The Postman," Swid?

So many people think there's a "Hunger Games" influence on "Revolution, " I think that only goes as far as the character of Charlie. Outside of that, I see much more touches of "The Postman," the only difference is in "The Postman" they could still make electricity.

I've seen it (The Postman). It's not bad, I like the cast (especially the Tom Petty cameo).

Apparently in tonight's episode, the group finds out what made the lights go out.

:o

What, but not necessarily "who" I would expect.

I'm liking the show less and less as it goes on. I was interested before it premiered, but I'm growing increasingly disappointed. It has it's moments, but I don't think it's well written in general. The overuse of flashbacks gets annoying and the violence seems to replace good writing all too often. I haven't had much problem with Charlie's character per se. I think they are trying to get the viewers on her side by first showing her as a good person and then showing how she becomes hardened over time and will be willing to take more questionable actions in the future. I thought last week's episode was mostly an excuse to get her into some lingerie, but given the poor writing, it didn't surprise me.

Starbase,
Those are interesting theories about how the power went out. Both could even explain why batteries don't work I think.

From watching the NBC-produced shorts on YouTube that go into the background of each episode, it seems these first episodes each have a theme and how that theme relates to a certain character in the show.

The flashbacks are almost a necessity to show us what these people were then (Miles and Sebastian the Marines, Aaron the rich businessman, Neville the nebbish insurance agent, and so on) to compare to what these people are 15 years later. Miles and Sebastian both betrayed their Marine oaths in different ways, Neville has now become the kind of person who used to bully him, Aaron is finding how to cope in a world where technology has become useless.

Probably won't get to see it tonight, so I'll have to catch it once it goes On Demand.

Starbase,

You can catch the episodes on Hulu too. I have had to watch a few there myself when I couldn't catch them at the time they aired on NBC.

I agree with your point about the flashbacks to a degree. But I think some information could be provided other ways such as in the dialog. Even the way the flashbacks are done is sometimes annoying. Sometimes there is no indication that they transitioned to a flashback and I end up realizing it only because of the fact that they suddenly have power, for example. It's becomes an "oh, we're in a flashback" moment when it seems like I already should have been informed of that before then.

I liked the episode this week better than some. Maybe there's hope.

Almost every flashback, or at least the first of a recurring one, will say "One Week Before The Blackout" or "Three Weeks After..." and so on. Some don't stay on screen long, so they can be easy to miss.

I have four episodes saved up to watch. At least the show has been picked up for a full season.

And now we wait until Spring for the story to continue.

One of the cool things I've found as the story has progressed?

Each cast member seems to have a burden to carry...

Miles: Probably the biggest of all, wondering how he can make up for being responsible for helping create the ruthless Monroe Republic.

Charlie: tasked with bringing his brother back safe and sound.

Aaron: wanting to feel like he has a useful place in the non-electric world, and to feel worthy of the wife he abandoned.

Nora: fighting her feelings for Miles and the loss of her family

Rachel: trying to keep herself and her son alive yet not giving Monroe what he wants.

Neville: knows in his heart he has become the kind of bully he used to despise while realizing he's still the coward he always was.

As far as the mid-season cliffhanger?

Spoiler: click to toggle

It has gotten a bit better in recent episodes, but the glaring lack of realism is still very distracting and takes away from the enjoyment for me.

I'll probably watch through the end of this season, but if I don't see improvement in the writing, I'll probably give up on it after that. It has potential so I'm trying to hang in there for now.

But it's going on hiatus until spring! We'll have to see if the viewers are willing to pick it up after a four month or so break.

Ouch! You're right. I thought it was returning in January, but I just saw here that's it's not returning until March 25th!

The number of viewers expected for the broadcast nets is still so much more than those expected for cable, so things like this can hurt a fledgling series badly. Cable series (i.e. "Burn Notice", "Walking Dead", "Longmire", "White Collar", etc.) don't have as high of expectations when it comes to viewers, so if the core audience returns with the series they'll renew it. On broadcast if the only the core audience returns then that often seems to translate into a drop in the audience and becomes a reason to cancel. Either broadcast has to follow its traditional model (reruns throughout the holiday season, then pick up in January) or revise their expectations of how big an audience they need for a show with a delayed return.

Tracy Spiridakos (Charlie), Giancarlo Esposito (Tom Neville) and JD Pardo (Jason "Jake" Neville) were in attendance at the People's Choice Awards last night in LA, "Revolution" was nominated for Best New TV Drama, but lost to the new incarnation of "Beauty & The Beast."

NBC has started a prequel series on YouTube called "Enemies Of The State" which takes place 4 years before Revolution and chronicles the beginning of the hunt for Miles Matheson after his split with Sebastain Monroe...

The first webisode has been posted.

Guess they figure after all this time off the air they better try to drum up some viewers.

You know I worry this show will get missed when it returns, given all the news about how NBC's viewership has plummeted in recent months (coming in behind the CW and Univision in Feb sweeps).
