Everything we know about groundbreaking new Syfy series Defiance

Screen grab from the trailer to the massively multiplayer online game version of Defiance

With Battlestar Galactica and Lost now distant memories, there's a gaping hole in the "epic sci-fi" category on television. Enter Syfy's Defiance.

The television series is being developed in conjunction with a massively multiplayer online game, and the two will be launched simultaneously. They'll be connected by the same overall storyline, to the point that events from the show will play a part in the game, and vice versa.

Here's everything we know about it so far:

What is it?

Defiance is set on a future Earth ravaged by war, and will feature human and alien cultures attempting to rebuild civilization in a post-terraformed Earth. If done well, the premise has the potential for politics, action, love and all the great aspects of amazing television.

Both the game and show will take place in the same universe, with the TV action set in a mining boom town outside St. Louis, Missouri, while the videogame will follow a cast of characters in California.

The television series is being developed by Syfy (obviously) and will air on the cable network. The videogame side is being handled by Trion Worlds, and the game is being developed for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Though the project is still in development, a demo showed off at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) generated a good bit of buzz and won the Best of Show award in the MMORPG category.

Who's writing it?

The show comes from a solid stable of writers, highlighted by Farscape creator Rockne O'Bannon. Farscape was a seminal work of modern science fiction, and I'm sure fans are psyched to see what he can do in this setting. Kevin Murphy (Caprica) is attached as showrunner, along with writer Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica) and director Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest).

Each of them comes with a very solid background in sci-fi TV.
Who's starring in it?

This is where the real fun begins. The recently announced cast is a veritable who's who of sci-fi stars, with everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Warehouse 13 represented.

Julie Benz (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, No Ordinary Family), Graham Greene (Dances With Wolves), Jaime Murray (Warehouse 13), Tony Curran (Underworld: Evolution, Gladiator), Grant Bowler (True Blood) and Stephanie Leonidas.

Benz plays Amanda Rosewater, mayor of a mining town barely clinging to the rule of law.

Bowler plays Nolan, a current law-keeper and former Marine who fought in the alien war and lost his wife and child along the way.

Leonidas plays Irisa, a beautiful alien warrior of the Irathients race, who was adopted by Nolan (Bowler) after he killed her criminal father.

Posted Image

Curran plays Datak Tarr, a cunning member of the Castithans alien race, who schemed his way onto an ark ship to escape his own planet's destruction.

Posted Image

Murray plays Datak's cunning wife Stahma, a powerful Castithan before her home planet was destroyed.

Greene plays Rafe McCawley, a rich man who has to play politics to stay that way.

The character descriptions are definitely intriguing, and there seem to be quite a few threads to mine for all kinds of drama once this show finally arrives.

Syfy hasn't released an air date for the show or a publication date for the game, but new announcements about casting are coming fast and furious, so there's definitely a lot of activity going on. In the meantime, there is a preliminary trailer for the game that looks pretty awesome.

Well, I'm certainly looking forward to it. I like the assembled cast as well. I don't have a lot of faith in Syfy's ability to follow through with the series after it airs though. I am hoping it turns out great.

I don't know why they decided to set the game in CA and the show in Missouri. Should have been in the same area. Oh well, I won't be doing the gaming part anyway.

I agree that I won't be doing the gaming part, but the series sounds lie one with a lot of potential.

First trailer is up...

It looks intriguing. I hope it hits big and follows through on the story end.

Premiere date is set for April 2013.

At this point I am thinking there will be some comparisons to TNT's "Falling Skies". This, probably due to its game tie-in, at least appears to be more action oriented than FS. Might skew towards a younger demographic.

^^ Thankfully this show has a much different vibe to me than FS. I could never get on board with that show.

So, watched the pilot episode tonight. Looks promising to me. At least interesting enough for me to give it a chance.

Some of the character visuals "feel" a bit like Farscape, which may be a result of Rockne O'Bannon's involvement. Funny thing is that parts of it left me with some sense of Jackson's LOTR. Especially the battle at the end. Seemed like a variation on a horde of Orcs and Trolls. The landscape and the lighting, even they cinematography.

If anyone here has seen it I'd love to see what you think. If not, I am sure Syfy will be rerunning throughout the week.

Seems that the pilot fared well in the ratings.

"Defiance" Ratings Hits High Notes.

Quote:

"Defiance" hit it big in the ratings for Syfy. The new series had 2.7 million viewers total and 1.3 million adults in the key 18-49 demographic.

"Defiance's" ratings in the 18-49 demo are the best a Syfy premiere has brought in since "Eureka" premiered in 2006. The "Defiance" premiere also had the highest total viewers of any Syfy premiere since "Warehouse 13" in 2009.

"Defiance," which stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner, has earned critical praise as well.

"This show isn't reinventing the wheel, but good character dramas with solid sci-fi credentials are scarcer than they should be, and I can't help but be grateful this show exists at all," The Huffington Post's Maureen Ryan said of "Defiance," which has "Desperate Housewives" and "Caprica" veteran Kevin Murphy at its helm. Other executive producers include Michael Taylor (“Battlestar Galactica") and Rockne O’Bannon (“Farscape”).

"Defiance" airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.

The show does look very cool, sadly though, I have not had much time to view it. I have been quite busy. I hope to have more time to see it though. I hope that I soon have more time for a lot of things. :)

It is a shame that I still have not been able to find the time to watch the show, but hopefully soon I will. I am still looking forward to seeing it, because from the episode that I have thus far seen, it looks cool. B)

I ended up saving all the episodes up from Season 1 and watched them as a marathon a while back. I enjoyed the first season and look forward to season 2.

I thought the mythos was intriguing and I like most of the characters. Especially Nolan, Irisa and Stahma Tarr. I was pretty annoyed by the turn of events in the Season 1 finale, but I still can't wait to see Season 2.

Season 2 premieres June 19th.

Season 1 didn't hold my interest as well as I hoped. Still, I want to give this show a chance.
