I'm going to have to find an old man and a cane emoticon for Swidden for his curmudgeon moments. LOL.

Good to know. The movie seems to be appealing to many demographics. |

I went to see The Hunger Games and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I highly recommend you see the movie and give it a rating of 4 1/2 stars out of 5. I rarely rate movies over 4. Katness as portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence is a strong leading character. Brave, but not invincible as strong female leads are written over the top at times. There is a thoughtful story, plenty of action and suspense and still manages to be character driven. You have to be emotionally prepared to see a certain amount of violence though that takes place during the games/competition. It makes sense in the context of the story though. There isn't violence for the sake of violence. The movie is still rated PG-13. There were several elements in the first movie that clearly are a set up for future movies. I think if they continue with those elements, then it will turn out to be a really good series of movies. |

I went to see this movie this weekend since it was still lingering in the local last-run theater. It was very well done and I enjoyed it, but I also found it disturbing. I'm sure it's meant to be disturbing so I suppose that's a good thing that it left me feeling that way. Because it's the first in a trilogy, it didn't have the satisfactory ending that I was wishing it did. Now I'm going to have to watch the other 2 when they come out. ![]() I actually took my nearly 11 year old daughter with me and, in fact, she was the reason we went at all. (I wanted to see it, but was going to wait for the DVD.) She had been complaining that many of her friends had seen it and were talking about it. I was very hesitant to take her to a movie with such violence at the core of its theme, but I finally gave in. So I was pleased to find that there was less violence than there could have been. Many of the killings took place in a way that you didn't see them at all. Others were visible, but not all that gory. There was just a handful of scenes that I thought might not have been the best things for my daughter to see. I really thought the whole plot of the movie was far more disturbing than the violence itself. My only disappointment in the movie was the explanation for how the hunger games originated. I had to read about it online later to clear that up. They skimmed over it at the beginning of the movie and, with a movie that's nearly 2 1/2 hours, it seems like they had the time and could have spent more on explaining this a little better. |

^^^ I'm waiting to watch it on DVD (just released last week I think) still. I agree with a lot of what you say IE. It is the concept that is disturbing to me. From the things I have heard I am glad to know that the violence is not glorified or "gorified". I thought the same thing with SWIII when Anakin walks in on the "younglings". Obviously, the film (and the books) are meant to be provocative. They are meant to spur on discussion. Clearly there are themes running through the series dealing with the ideas of how to respond to an oppressive regime; in addition to our seeming blind cultural acceptance of "reality" entertainment and what celebrity culture can lead to if we're not careful. |
